Wofford at Chattanooga

Western Carolina at Samford

Furman at VMI

The Citadel at Mercer

- - - Updated - - -

Wofford -21
Chattanooga -24 - honestly I'm not sure what to expect here and it is a worry that there will be some first game mistakes. I think the Mocs are a better team overall though.

Western Carolina -17
Samford -41 - Samford normally blows out bad competition, plus they have to be mad about last week. The Bulldogs are just the better team.

Furman - 48
VMI - 24 - The Paladins go on the road and get the W. Clay Hendrix has this team playing well, and though VMI is improved, they don't have the firepower to keep up with the purple ponies.

The Citadel -21
Mercer -17 - I think this will be a close game and think Mercer overall will be better than people think, but The Citadel is just a better team right now and can eat up the clock at will. The Bulldogs in a close one.

Samford--Western will have another bad year.
Furman (game of the week)--both teams are really good, but I think the Paladins will be a little more polished
Mercer (mild upset) --Mercer is ready to defend the option IMO and the Citadel didn't look great in the fall. It'll come down to how well the Bears move the ball, and I think they'll have some success.
COVID (but if Wofford/UTC play, I think that's the game of the week and I am biased on who I think will win)

Wofford 24 - Chattanooga 21 - without knowing what happened with COVID and the Mocs, there is a lot of uncertainty here.
Samford 35 - WCU 14
Furman 38 - VMI 10
Mercer 21 - The Citadel 20 - The Citadel has a lot of on-field experience this season, but none of it good.

Time will tell if Furman has the quality depth it appears to have. Against WCU — Furman played three offensive lines, had ten players rush the ball, and had nine players make a catch.

Nice highlight package…

I haven't kept up recently. But he is not listed on the roster. Our Fall performance wasn't great to be sure, but I am pretty sure we had a bunch of opt outs in the backfield, so nobody should use that as a measuring stick too much.

But who knows how the new QB will do. The heir presumptive for the spring played a bunch in the fall so....

For the future, we did have an awesome recruiting season.

That seems about right to me. I'd say Furman may be a little high, but at the same time VMI hasn't developed consistency quite yet, and their defense was porous even when they were much improved last year.

I'd say Furman may be a little highFurman could have beaten WCU 220-7 last week. Not gonna say they ready to knock the bizuns or the dooks off their perches just yet, but that was one good lookin’ football team I saw (on the broadcast) up in TR last Sat. The 2 I saw live in SparkleCity...not so much.

I was talking about Furman's predicted spread against VMI. I know Furman's a good football team (even if they've struggled lately in bigger games), I'm just saying that I'm not sure if VMI is that bad of a football team.

This feels a little bit like being in the Twilight Zone. It is hard to ignore that teams may very well be looking forward to the fall. This could affect play calling, motivation, playing time, etc. Every team will be different, but all the distractions will have an impact on performance, so most of the Spring will be a crapshoot.

Wofford @ Chatty - Thinking it will be close in Chattanooga - 21-17

The Citadel @ Mercer - My Bulldogs are 5-1 against Mercer since they joined the SOCON. 4 of those 6 games have been one score affairs. Given the Bulldog's new starting QB, the weird season, and about a dozen Bulldogs absent for various reasons, this should be pretty close, but I think the Bulldogs will get er done - 19-17

Furman @ VMI - Not close, but VMI will not be as bad as the score looks, They will be a bit cold - 38-14

WCU @ Samford - I watched a little over a quarter of their game last week before I had to go out, and it looked like they would roll. I was shocked when I saw the final score. Samford bounces back this week - 42-13

Just early season musings. I’m giving Samford more of benefit of doubt from last week than credit to ETSU, although I picked Bucs to win that one in a close game. Also was not impressed by Western’s defense. Very weak, and Furman wasn’t even showing nearly all of what we’ll likely be doing on offense this spring. (And Western has no offense...none.) I expect Samford to handle the Cats easily.

So I looked on the WCU website and it looks like no tickets available for games. I thought about doing a drive by in Cullowhee next week for our game and at least peek in from the hill. I hate at least not seeing a little bit of a game in person. I got my dad with me and we go on drives in the mountains a lot. I already took him there once. I am only 30 or so miles away. Any non ticket viewing suggestions?

Furman WR Ryan DeLuca is a stud, 7 catches for 149 yards, at least five of the catches were for 1st downs. Devin Wynn had 94 yards rushing, at least 70% of those after first contact. VMI came with five or six rushers on about every passing situation, got nine sacks of Sisson.

Reign of Terrier

Congrats on all the upsetters today. I include Chattanooga in that category, but only because Wofford has (mundanely) been the best team in the Socon over the last 3-4 years.

Chattanooga was the better team today and they're a great team overall, with 30 some-odd transfers (is that correct?), a big offensive line, and a very solid QB, and strong defense.

the Socon is wide open this season.

We have Furman and Wofford at their normal levels, VMI with their best squad in decades (unless they're "worse" than last year), and Chattanooga back at "Huesman era" status. I think ETSU will be better than last season (even if it doesn't show up in the final record) and we know Samford will be tough. And Mercer, contra FUBear, who has suddenly found humbleness in his predictions, looks good in spurts as well. The Socon is good again, I think.

What sucks is that it will take a month before anyone gives VMI or Chattanooga any credit. It's more likely voters in the poll tank Wofford/Furman.

30 some-odd transfers (is that correct?)

We do have 30 transfers on the roster - which is a lot, though some of those guys are walkons for us. The Mocs have done well in recent years with local guys transferring back to Chattanooga (often with 3-4 years to play) after they initially decided to sign elsewhere. Out of those 30, eight are Chattanooga area natives. When Rusty Wright brought in his staff in 2019 they also brought some guys with them from their previous stops - I think five of those thirty are those type guys. Three are from JuCo's that were recruited (two of them by Arth). One was a long term Chattanooga commit, who flipped on signing day and transferred back to Chattanooga the next year. Another, transferred to Chattanooga (as a walkon) after we signed his brother. We have some others that I believe were recruited, including several in this years class - many of those we had offered out of HS and they decided to go elsewhere but came back after a year.

Reign of Terrier
February 28th, 2021, 09:33 AM
Yeah, I bring the 30 transfers up not as a subliminal dig or anything. It's certainly a recruiting option that teams like Chattanooga and ETSU can use more than Furman and Wofford. Transfers are probably more progressed than freshmen coming in. Having lots of transfers doesn't necessarily make a team "better" (which is why people at the FCS level who complain about them get an eye roll from me), but I think it does put a floor on how bad you are.

Todd Arth was not the right coach for Chattanooga, but because he had a solid nucleus from the Huesman days and because he could recruit a couple transfers, Chattanooga looked painfully mediocre, as opposed to terrible. And now that they have a decent coach, it looks like they're back to Huesman era caliber.

Which, I hate, because we lost, but it's good for the socon in the long term. Iron sharpens iron, etc.
