College football players sustained far more concussions during practices than they did in games, medical researchers reported on Monday, a finding certain to add to the yearslong debate about regulating training regimens across the sport.
Much less clear is whether the college sports industry will nationalize safety reforms like those adopted by the N.F.L., which limits the number of full-contact practices per season, or some college conferences. But with the N.C.A.A. and its members facing urgent decisions on other fronts, including the coronavirus pandemic (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/11/sports/coronavirus-college-sports-football.html), far-reaching new rules are probably not imminent.
The authors of the new study, published in JAMA Neurology, a peer-reviewed journal (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/fullarticle/10.1001/jamaneurol.2020.5193?guestAccessKey=36fe842d-33b6-4c81-b2cd-fd51d786a285&utm_source=For_The_Media&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ftm_links&utm_content=tfl&utm_term=020121), found that 72 percent of the concussions they reviewed over five college football seasons happened during practice. And although preseason training accounted for about one-fifth of the time the researchers studied, they found that nearly half of the concussions occurred during that period.

Go live contact in practice 2x/3x per week - 1 live contact game/week (in season)...add...what?...about 10 full contact days in Spring & 10/15 in preseason... just rounding ... live contact practice days are about 5x live contact game days. If you add that 100 Players are going live in those practices vs. 50 on game days, 10x more contact occurs in Practice. Didn’t read the study...but FUBeAR, understanding game-speed is a bit more amped than practice speed, and other variables would project 5x or 6x more concussions in practice vs. games. What did the ‘experts’ determine in their study?

They determined what the title says. More concussions at practice than in games. Sometimes facts are just facts. The larger question posed is whether the NCAA/P5 will implement an NFL-style plan to address it that covers all college teams. They don't offer an answer. They just pose the question.

Concussions more concerning than Covid ?

For me, the answer is yes Because we don’t have 70 year olds with pre-existing conditions playing college football

These young kids are gonna be fine playing during a pandemic but the concussions are going to be felt both now and later in life

Kind of a “water is wet” conclusion by anyone that knows football (and water).

Honestly, I don’t care what practice limitation rules they pass. I had no live contact except on GameDay from the final game of my Jr. Year until the end of my Sr. Year - we were EXCEPTIONALLY thin at my position & just couldn’t afford a practice injury. Not sure how the young bucks will learn college “speed of ball” if they don’t go live a bunch in practice during their early years...but if all Teams are similarly restricted, no worries. Just think it’s a silly study / silly article. I read it between posts.

As Fubear already implied in his response.

What is the number of concussions per player hour of game time vs per player hour of practice time?

Players do spend many more hours practicing then they do playing. and many players spend time practicing that do not play on game day.

GREAT point...which is why statistics can be fun. I have not read the methodology or findings from this study yet - I will - but wapiti's point is a huge one from a stats perspective. Water may indeed be wet xeyebrowx

Not just more players per practice, but many more players active at any given time for a longer period of time. Concussions could be MUCH more skewed toward practice than games. Concussions per player per hour of active participation should be assessed.

What are chances of helmets being re-designed to be soft on the outside? Some teams already put padding over their helmets in practice.

Approx 12 minutes of action in a football game, 6 minutes for offense and 6 minutes for defense.
