Furman 21 - Delaware 7 (Greenville, S.C. 7,487)

Montanans awfully quiet here...

I posted the relevant info in another thread last month. I'm too lazy to look it up again. IIRC MT was had 1 or 2 wins & 8 or 9 losses but those numbers included NC games at Marshall so... 0(1)-8?

My homer explanation/excuse continues to be that when MT has a really good team the selection committe insures that MT plays all their playoff games at home. On a "down" year they have to go on the road and then they lose. IIRC Montana's road losses were to Idaho (at least two), Nevada, Boise St, McNeese (twice), Georgia Southern, Youngstown & that horrific game at one of the Illinois schools (52-9?).

Teams that win on the road deserve accolades and respect. Teams that struggle?... well whatever you guys need to do to make you feel better about your team go ahead, Montana fans can take it...

Yes, Montana is 0-7 in road playoff games. We have lost these games to the following teams:

Idaho (twice)
Georgia Southern
Youngstown St.
McNeese St. (twice)
Western Illinois

While I won't make excuses, those are some awfully tough places to win, let alone in a playoff atmosphere.

From all these numbers so far, it sure appears that you can kiss a NC goodbye if you can't "buy" home playoff games (doesn't seem to matter what school you support - YSU excluded). xeyebrowx

You make a valid point, Greenday. Since the FCS playoffs expanded to their current, four-round format in 1982, only 5 eventual champions have played two or more road games (information provided by CSN and i-aa.org, copyright):

Colgate is 1 - 7 in road games since 1982.

Using CFBDatawarehouse, I only get 1-6. To be more specific...

12/4/1982 L at Delaware 20-13 (Quarterfinals)
11/26/1983 L at Western Carolina 24-23 (1st Round)
11/29/1997 L at Villanova 49-28 (1st Round)
11/28/1998 L at Georgia Southern 49-28 (1st Round)
11/27/1999 L at Illinois State 56-13 (1st Round)
12/13/2003 W at Florida Atlantic 36-24 (Semifinals)
11/26/2005 L at New Hampshire 55-21 (1st Round)

Lehigh is 3-4 on the road, (I-AA), unless you include the I-AA Finals in Orlando in 1979, which we lost to Eastern Kentucky, which makes it 3-5:

1979 Murray State 28-9 W
1979 E.Kentucky 7-30 L I-AA Finals (Orlando, FL)
1998 Richmond 24-23 W
1998 U. Mass. 21-27 L
1999 Hofstra 15-27 L
2000 W.Illinois 37- 7 W
2000 Delaware 22-47 L
2001 Furman 17-34 L

In D-II:

1973 W.Kentucky 16-26 L
1977 U. Mass. 30-23 W
1977 Cal-Davis 39-30 W
1977 J'ville State 33- 0 W D-II Finals (Wichata Falls, TX)

So overall, we're 6-6 on the road in all playoffs.

Interesting thread. Thanks 89.

I suppose one could argue theoretically that when teams are at their best they are seeded and play all games at home and should win. (When they are not seeded, buying the playoff game is important). And when they are not at their best, they hit the road and therefore should lose. So a school that is 50/50 or better is playing darn well on the road in the playoffs. xnodx

Richmond is 1-3 in the playoffs on the road, losing in Kingston, RI, Boone, NC, Missoula, MT and winning in Hampton, VA...

Appalachian St. 19, Ga. Southern 0 (Boone, N.C. 9,229) OUCH

I found pics from AGS said to be taken from TSC. Preserved for the last twenty years.

Someone said you had to chip off the ice just to sit down. Typical App State playoff football weather.

Back in the old days were Kidd Brewer was Conrad Stadium. (http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/docs/docDownload.aspx?guid=51A00D9D-D388-4C89-AD3F-0CECC94EA565&webtag=appstate)

I was about to post that. There were some comments on the home field advantage, but when you really think about it, for many years the entire field was seeded so it would make sense that the home team (higher seed) would win a majority of the games. To say Montana had to travel in years when they were "down" is stating the obvious. The only team that seems to not really care where they play in YSU. That's a pretty impressive road record. xbowx

So who has the best road record? (Minimum of 8 playoff appearances)

No. It was in Bowling Green.

yep, and was about as cold a day as BA's ever experienced. Just downright miserable.
