Bears' safety Mike Radon

Safety Mike Radon, a defensive standout for the Missouri State football Bears for the past two seasons, has signed a free agent contract with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League.

Radon, who started for the past two years for the Bears at free safety after playing quarterback for two seasons, was Missouri State’s defensive Most Valuable Player for the 2006 season and shared the MSU Coors Player of the Year Award with OT Justin Williamson for 2006. Radon was also the winner of the Virgil Cheek Award, given annually at Missouri State to the outstanding graduating senior male athlete, based on athletics, academics and leadership.

Hamilton has exhibition games June 14 and June 22 before opening its 18-game regular season schedule June 30. Hamilton, located at the western end of Lake Ontario near Toronto, finished with a 4-14 record last season.

During the 2006 season, Radon had 68 tackles, one forced fumble, two recovered fumbles and four interceptions (one for a touchdown) for the Bears. He earned Gateway Football Conference second team recognition and academic all-conference recognition. Radon came up with a pass interception in his first day in the Tiger Cats’ camp. His home is in nearby Buffalo, N.Y.

Radon is the second Bears’ defensive back to sign a pro free agent contract in recent weeks. Darren Barnett, who gained all-Gateway first team honors in 2004 in his only season at Missouri State, recently signed with the NFL New York Giants.

Congrats to Mike, but this probably belongs in the FCS and the Pros forum.
