A decision by the University of North Carolina System means that students at five HBCUs will be paying a full athletics fee in the fall, despite no sports.

The UNC System, which includes five HBCUs, announced on Thursday that it would not be cutting tuition and fees. That means that Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central and Winston-Salem State students will pay full athletics fees despite no fall sports.

The students should sue.

That's the problem with state systems that have a one-size-fits-all (some better than others) approach. North Carolina's is driven by UNC and NCSU. The five HBCUs and schools like ECU, Charlotte, UNCG, UNCW, WCU, App State, etc. just have to put up with what's good for the "big boys."

That should mean that in return those seniors who wish to return for the 2021 season at the FCS/D2 level at these NC schools should not have their senior year athletic aide reduced or revoked.

UNC and NC State charge the least in athletics fees while the HBCUs charge the most. So, we'll need those fees to stay afloat in this Covid-19 mess.

This seems reasonable. If you don't charge a fee for first semester and then decide to play soccer, volleyball and football in the spring, you would need to double the athletic fee for second semester. If fall sports aren't played, should all athletic scholarships be suspended? If not, you still need some revenue source to pay for scholarships.

A&T hasn’t issued a statement their Fall sports season is over.
