This fishy as hell

Austin Peay State University Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison announced that Mark Hudspeth has resigned his duties as head football coach, effective immediately.

Not much in this story other than spending more time with his family. Plans to return to coaching in the future.

This guy is a really, really good Coach...but there always seems to something just a bit amiss in his programs. Be interesting to see how this situation /story might evolve.

What the heck! I knew Mark from his days at UCA. He's gone onto Nicholls and Delta State to name a few. Wonder what happened?! Can't wait to see.

This will make the UCA game kinda strange to start the year IF it still happens....

Dang Mark.....xsmhx

IT is sad that the first thing that comes to mind is something serious went down. Hope not, but that is the environment we are in right now.

There's always some baggage that comes with this guy. There was something odd when he was here at SLU then suddenly left. I just don't recall what it was.

You don’t just quit on July 3 unless you have a good reason. Three things come to mind.

1. Major NCAA problems
2. Major health concern for him or family
3. He was having an affair with a student

I'm leaning towards #2 because he didn't rule out coming back to coaching later.

Of course Bobby Petrino keeps coming and coming..............

#2 would have been addressed in the release.

You don't usually dump this kinda story at 4:30PM on a Friday of a Holiday weekend, unless the fall-out is very bad (probably worse than #3, because the student would be 18+)...I've been known to create a story where there is not one...but I doubt this is one of those situations.

Hud was never at SLU. He was the head coach at UL-Lafayette for 7 years and was fired after the 2017 season. Not sure what happened with this resignation but he did have some issues at ULL.

ETSU gave the Governors one of their three losses this past season. When I first heard the news, I was shocked. It should be noted that FB accounted for all 13 COVID-19 cases there, causing all athletic activities to stop.

They had to vacate a bunch of wins because they cheated.

He's always bounced around and there's always been rumors wherever he went. He's never been a head coach at a P5 and would only hold position coach jobs for two years avg. He only got the job at UL-LAFAYETTE because they were despartely trying to be LSU and it cost them three bowl games a championship title and four seasons. Don't be suprise if Austin Peavy is next

Apparently he met his current wife while married to his first wife and the current wife was a student at North Alabama while he was coach there.

I'll leave the rumors for others, but Hud was the head coach for seven years at North Alabama and seven years at ULL. Not sure I would consider that "bouncing around."

"During Hudspeth's suspension he was restricted from all areas of the university, and the email added the school "reserves the right to levy further disciplinary action if it is determined that you were not completely transparent or if new details arise regarding this situation, up to and including termination."

I'd go with number 1.

He was kinda at the center of Mississippi State's eligibility scandal.....and USL had eligibility problems....

Tsk.

This is the first I've heard of a coach getting involved with a mom.

Columbia had a coach resign in the late 1980s for having an affair with an assistant coach's wife.

Any news on a hire for Austin Peay? The Govs were one of the worst scholarship teams in FCS for several years before they hired Mocs assistant coach Will Healey who turned them around. He left for Charlotte and they hired Hudspeth, who I thought was a good coach and hire, but perhaps he couldn't keep himself out of trouble. I wonder what their trajectory will be now.

Healy absolutely turned the culture around at APSU. That said, they really had solid athletes there, going back at least as far as 2014. They just also had the absolutely worst Coached College Football Team that FUBeAR has ever seen, 2014-2015.

Yes, they were underneath ‘the pits’ when he arrived, but I think calling this a ‘turnaround’ is a bit of a stretch...

Too bad for the Govs that he just can’t seem to stay out of some kind of trouble.

I had not realized that he had such an inglorious end to his last head coaching gig.

Sometimes a program takes a risk on a guy. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes not.
