Following the emergency board of trustees meeting last week at Bethune-Cookman, as first reported by HBCU Gameday, there is a statement about the possibility of switching conference affiliation. Athletic Director Lynn W. Thompson issued the following statement to our Vaughn Wilson.

“Bethune-Cookman University has enjoyed a great partnership with the MEAC for forty years. However, like many other institutions across the nation, we are presently engaged in an analysis to assess all options available to us regarding athletic conference affiliation. Toward this end, we will continue to follow the directive of our Board and institutional leadership to ensure our alignment with an athletic conference that best meets the long-term needs of Bethune-Cookman University.”

Not surprising we all figured this move would be coming soon. Question is does the SWAC add them or do they opt for Big South or SoConn

tithes and offerings? Is this the same Bethune Cookman that has been losing about $10M per year for the last 4 years and in danger of losing its accreditation??

They want to join the SWAC... that's obvious.

If the SWAC doesn't take them, they will ask the ASUN for help, if the ASUN accepts them, football would be in the Big South.

If the SWAC doesn't want them I think they will consider D2.

Even D2 is a far stretch for BCU when looking at the landscape. They would have to look to the GSC for an invite where they'd have all conference games in in Florida, Georgia, Alabama & Mississippi. Even then your shortest road trip is 7 hours. The SIAC might be a little better except for the trips to Central State & Kentucky State.

IMO they'd be better served dropping down to D2 and joining the CIAA. Bowie and Lincoln are both short bus trips away. And they'd probably be more competitive in both football and basketball. Honestly their facilities are more on par with the CIAA so they should attract D2 recruits a lot easier than they're doing at the D1 level.

Can the SWAC absorb them all, or might some go to the new United conference?

Makes 0 sense for Norfolk State, NCCU, Morgan State, UMES or Howard to join the SWAC. If anything else this will push Howard to either join the Patriot League or maybe they'll swing a deal for Norfolk State and them to land in the CAA for all sports. NSU actually has quality facilities both football and basketball that could be appealing to the CAA and helps with travel for William & Mary. I fear UMES may slide down to D2 and NCCU can probably get the Big South to take them in as a natural rivalry to A&T.

Since BCU and FAMU are leaving the conference could the remaining MEAC schools decide to boycot playing them on the road? Since the NEC has done that to Robert Morris why can't the MEAC schools say we don't want to travel to Daytona or Tallahassee on a plane.

If they are on the schedule for this year they would be obligated to play them at their place. I guess the rest of the league could vote to kick both of them out right now.

Not to mention Coppin State & UMES might also be forced to drop down with them, providing additional local opponents.

6 Football Schools means 5 Conference games and 6 Out of Conference. If you need a home and home Fall 2021 and beyond , call a MEAC school

No chance the CAA takes them. Hampton is the more desirable athletic program in the region. Better life raft is hoping the Big South allows them to become #14 (joining with NCCU) over SC State. But the Big South has no obvious reason to dilute it's NCAA pool further as a form of charity. It has a fairly stable football conference now.

Meaning no NCAA Tournament autobid once the moves happen. Those teams will need to look for somewhere to get affiliate membership for baseball.

The conference is barely holding on to D1 Status. Baseball AQ is the least of the worries.

I can’t see that happening. It’s not like men’s soccer where you need warm bodies. Baseball is pretty widespread. I could see a league taking one if they have an odd number. The SoCon might do it as Chattanooga doesn’t sponsor baseball.

The ASUN commissioner posted on his Twitter account that he has been interviewed by HBCUgameday. At the time of posting this, it has not released yet. The ASUN currently has no HBCU schools. What could the interview be about?

Covid-19 will take care of that issue of boycott for them. All they have to say is "we are concerned about our student-athletes overall health and safety."

Now that the SWAC has 12 teams how will they split the teams? Two of the schools from Mississippi will have to go east. Which two? Are they expecting more MEAC schools to follow? Tennessee State?
