View Full Version : Would you like to see the 12th game become a permanent thing in FCS?

Hey guys how would you like it if the FCS regular season was given a 12th game on a permanent basis? This would eliminate 1st round Thanksgiving Weekend Games and would turn that weekend into rivalry weekend like at the FBS level. It would also cut down on the waiting period between the semifinals and the Championship Game.

I'm all for it...would it make it possible for more HBCU participation in the playoffs? Or are there any classic games scheduled after that weekend?

Sure, 12th game, conference championship, 8 team playoff.

reduce the playoff size, then make any other changes you desire.

If you started the playoffs a week later the 2020 semifinals would be held the day after Christmas.

I know. I'm always back home in New Orleans for the game and festivities. We play that Thursday on Thanksgiving for The Turkey Day Classic.

Not needed, and doubtful it would happen because no one is going to shrink the current playoffs. But for starters, how about getting the Ivy League up to 11 games?

If you go to 12, drop the playoffs to 16 teams and fully seed the field.

AQs:
Big Sky
Big South
CAA
MVFC
NEC
OVC
Patriot
Pioneer
SoCon
Southland

Remaining 6 slots are awarded from there. Most seasons would breakout as follows

Big Sky: 2-3
Big South: 1-2
CAA 2-3
MVFC: 2-3
NEC: 1
OVC: 1-2
Patriot: 1
Pioneer: 1
SoCon: 1-2
Southland: 1-2
SWAC: 1

The low in this likely scenario would be 14 and the high would be 21. The law of averages would work out to allowing 16 teams in but on that rare occasion where a non big 3 conference has 2-3 good teams, it's going to be tough to leave them out even though their conference, as a whole, may not be as strong as others.

I left the MEAC out since I do not believe they will be sustainable going forward and other schools will be poached thereby, eliminating their autobid.

Yeah, this is the problem with a 12 game regular season. I voted no because a 12 game regular season means one of the following:
1) The scenario dgtw lays out above where the semis are played on or very near Christmas
2) The playoff field is reduced to 16 teams or less which would take away autobids
3) The bye weeks are shifted where there's a bye week between the quarters and the semis (to avoid games on or near Christmas) and then no bye week between the semis and the championship

I'm not a fan of any of those 3 options. I do think a 12 game regular season has benefits. The attendance would presumably be better than the first round playoff games are now since schedules are set months in advance so fans can make preparations for Thanksgiving weekend that include going to a football game. It would also mean more SWAC teams could potentially be eligible for playoff at-large consideration which can't be a bad thing. I just think the cons outweigh the pros.

The Semis were played on 12/21 and the final was on 1/11...push everying back one week.....play the final on 1/18. 12 games could give people more home games or more money games....I don't see much of a downside...

this !! Ivy seriously needs to get with the program .. play 11 games, participate in playoffs like every one of your other sports programs, schedule tougher OOC games more than you do. Then their arguments about how good they are or are not cane be debated based on bigger sample sizes of results.

I voted a strong NO on adding 12th game every season .. 11 plus playoffs is enough, and I'm fine with playing a 12th game every 4 years or so based on how weekends fall.

And while I agreeabout not liking the 3 week gap between semis and finals, there are 2 holidays in there, and most campus are shut down this entire time anyways. So I completely get it and am fine with it for those reasons.

p.s. besides, we do ok attendance-wise, but ISUr fans can be very fair weather .. so for us and most FCS teams, a 12th game would be another game later in season in colder weather, that will be poorly attended.

No.

A 12th game is a pleasant occurrance every few years. Making it permanent would remove that. 16 games for two teams is a lot. When is enough, enough?

A 12th game would be good for us as many would book an FBS money game or a game with a regional rival. It could also be used as a Conf. Championship game week. As a result, the playoffs should probably be reduced down to safe money.

That would require changing the NCAA bylaws that require at least as many at-large spots as AQ spots.
And seeding the entire field would increase costs (as it would result in more flights and fewer bus trips; as much as regionalization sucks, I don't think that's going to happen given the current financial climate) and possibly decrease revenue (eliminating the bid process).

It's going to have to be a give and take option for me to get behind.

Not at all. An extra game against some useless team with so many potential injuries and no entertainment just to get a few gate receipts? No thank you. And yet, if you don't schedule the freebie win, you risk getting left out of the field at 6-5 vs another 7-5 power team since 7-5 is often all it takes nowadays. (Probably neither deserves to be in but if the field were reasonably sized 7-4 would risk being left out against a fairly close 8-4 team) Number of D1 wins, while telling almost nothing, decides a heck of a lot.

I did the math ... it would be week 0.5 .. unless you played it on a sunday, then it's roughly week 0.5714, if rounded to 4 decimals.

If teams want to schedule a 12th game they should be able to and if you don't that's fine too. Options are not a bad thing.

There is a 0.0% chance that the NCAA ever de-regionalizes the FCS playoff field anytime soon. The only tournaments that are seeded nationally right now are Men's & Women's Basketball. The best we could hope for is that the committee makes a point to avoid potential re-matches in the Round of 16. The earliest point that you should face someone you already played during the season should be the quarterfinal round. When the playoffs had only 16 teams, there were no rematches in the first round. I'm OK with pairing conference teams early in the playoffs IF they didn't play during the regular season.

Since alot of schools will just add a d2 school could just have a scrimage instead since they don't count anyway.

Same thing I was thinking 12 would be the most you could schedule, you don't have to schedule 11
