Utah: The design is fine but maybe too much of a single color.
ND: I do not see why this is on that list.
Iowa State: Again maybe to much of a single color.
Clemson: Clemson does not belong here, great helmet.
Air Force: I like it when they wear white pants better.
Delaware: I usually do not like blue and yellow together.
Syracuse: I think to much orange with the blue, I think uniforms are recent.
Rhoad Island: Could stand to have some more white in there.
Wyoming: Unique with the colors so I wouldn't want to see them change it.
Oregon: They have some of the most unique and numerous combos of any team and they love it. I like their all black.

An old Coach at Princeton came up with the helmet design, and brought it with him when he moved on to coach at Michigan This happened in like 1920, I suspect Delaware just copied as I believe they dont have any right to the original design.

An old Coach at Princeton came up with the helmet design, and brought it with him when he moved on to coach at Michigan This happened in like 1920, I suspect Delaware just copied as I believe they dont have any right to the original design.

I'll expand that - Fritz Crisler was the coach at Princeton way back when (1920's?) and he came up with the wing design on the helmet to aid the QB in determining where his receivers were when they were downfield. He then moved on to Michigan and coached there (notice Michigan's Crisler Arena is named after him). He took the helmet design with him. Delaware's two legendary coaches, Dave Nelson and Tubby Raymond (both in the College Hall of Fame) both played at Michigan for Crisler and both went on to coach at Delaware, where they then brought the helmet design (Nelson actually coached at several places before UD and brought the helmet design to every school he coached). It's coincidence that UD and Michigan have relatively similar colors, although officially Michigan's colors are maize and blue while UD's colors are blue and gold. As for the "right" to the original design, there is no copyright on it that I know of so no one has exclusive rights to the design.

this is the same SI that had Derek Jeter in it's top 100 busts of all time. When given the choice between accuracy and controversy, they choose the latter every time - it's the kind of stuff that produces several page threads on message boards like this.

To have UD and URI on there is ridiculous imo. However, taste is clearly subjective since I also love the Penn St. uni's and Ohio Hen differs (in today's 'me' world, I think it's great to see no names on the back of jerseys and just very simple, direct and classic uni's).

That was my first thought. The orange on white are absolutely fine, they just picked the wrong photo.

I have to say, this list is more than disappointing. The ONLY unis on that list that deserves to be there is Oregon and that's for selling out to Nike. I really don't like ISU's mustard and ketchup, but not really horrible. Picking Wyoming for old unis? ND's green is perhaps one of the all-time best unis IMO because they are good looking and only worn on special occassions. I agree with AFA's helmets being rather blah, but the rest of the uni is great. URI's colors have never bothered me one bit and UD has had those unis since the 50's... I think the statute of limitations on criticizing them has long since expired. xcoffeex

You can't really blame a school for its mascot and colors not really matching. Maryland Terps, LSU Tigers, Clemson, Florida...

Personally, I like the red and light blue Hornets uniforms. I remember back in the early 90's they had dashed stripes down the side of their pants. Regular 3 stripes, just dashed every 3-4 inches. At the time, it was sweet looking. xthumbsupx

Pants seem to be the make-or-break ingredient when it comes to uniforms. Bright pants - particularly if they match the jersey - look pretty goofy. That's Air Force's problem - they look like they're wearing auto mechanic coveralls.

There are only about 4 colors of football pants that don't look stupid, and they're all fairly neutral (variations of black, white, old gold, gray, possibly navy). Yellow isn't terrible, but it isn't great, either. Even if one of those colors isn't in your team's color scheme, it isn't hard to do the Clemson thing and go with white.

This is more a conversation starter than a definitive list. I've never met anybody who likes Nike's Oregon attrocities, though.

I've heard rumors that Coach Moore has turned down Nike sponsorships in the past. Truly, the man is a genius.

Lehigh Football Nation

Although the blue turf is worse, after Oregon any conversation about terrible uniforms has to have Boise State in the conversation:

http://www.steveconnerphotography.com/BSU%20Football/2006/Sac%20State/images/Boise%20State%20vs%20Sac%20State%200071.jpg

The funny thing is Air Force is on the list, when there are three teams in their own CONFERENCE with worse uniforms than them (Hawaii, Boise State, Wyoming).

In FCS, it's awfully hard to top Morgan's home uni's or FAMU's orange-on-green nightmares. Orange is simply a huge error as a primary uni color - it only works as a secondary.

This is more a conversation starter than a definitive list. I've never met anybody who likes Nike's Oregon attrocities, though.

Strange enough, I actually liked Oregon's uniforms, even the yellow ones, up until last year when they introduced the faux steel diamond plate pattern on the shoulders and the knees. I'm all for creativity in color, but putting that junk on the uniform just made them look comical.

What I don't like...

- Same color pants and jerseys and yes, that includes white on white.

- Script names on helmets (sorry Griz and Colgate fans)... it's like you just gave up.

- More than two combos (Clemson has about 6).

- Something on backs other than the players name (sorry McNeese, I get the whole 'team' thing but just leave them blank then).

- Continually changing uniforms and more importantly, helmets (see Missouri State, Lafayette, Liberty...)

Agreed. Colgate had a plain, elegant block "C" at one time but gave it up after the 1976 season for the "'gate" moniker, which has really become entrenched as the national Colgate logo (my AGS name comes from a maroon bumper sticker very popular during the first season of its use, in 1977).

I think *I* may be the most qualified person on these boards to judge whether something's orange or not....;)

IMO, Texas' uni is definitely orange.

As far as the SI selection:

Utah: not really bad, just not too special either. Quite bland
Notre Dame: even though green may be the traditional one, I like the blue better
ISU: same as Utah pretty much, but the yellow collar makes it a bit easier on the eyes.
Clemson: nice uni's, but I hate the paws. I like the shade of faded orange (but then again, I just like orange) I also like the purple/orange jerseys.
Air Force: damn ugly. What's up with the thunderbolt. The black socks only make it worse. For modern, it looks too poorly done. Oregon's even more modern, but at least the detailing on that one is better.
Delaware: like the more faded darker blue Michigan has, don't like the round numbers at all.
Syracuse: I don't know. Again, orange is sweet. Orange/black is a good combo as well, but maybe just a bit too much black in this one. Works with the old school helmets with simply numbers on them. Faded over shiny black either way.
Rhode Island: what's that on the collar? Shaded diamonds? Also, the logo on the v-neck is just a bit weird. Nothing particularly wrong with the uni, but nothing special either. The helmet is alright.
Wyoming: Don't know if they're the only school sporting these colors, but I think it looks good. Do I want JMU to switch to brown and yellow? HELL NO, but with the simple WYOMING and the thick striping, I don't see anything wrong with it.
Oregon: hmmm what can I say. Really hate the diamond-plated shoulders. The yellow is off..it's just too damn modern. But it's better than Air Force modern.

The circled "IU" in the helmets is priceless. You have one of the most classic logos in sports, and you use that to market your football team? No wonder they stunk.

SI comes out with a list like this every once in a while, and it's different every time. That in and of itself is a reason not to care what they think. Most of the choices are lame, like Rhody, Air Force and Utah. To be fair, I don't care for Notre Dame's green, and Syracuse's new use of orange and navy is horrible. Wyoming, well, maybe Brown and Yellow just isn't a good idea (Lehigh, I'm looking at you...;)). Oregon's speak for themselves, quite loudly, in fact.

When I first saw Colgate's helmets, after deciding to go there, I didn't like it that much. It managed to grow on me pretty quickly, and to be honest I like how unique it is. The block "C" seems too, well, boring. I knew how much I liked it during the first game of 2005, when the decals hadn't arrived and the team played in plain maroon helmets. It just didn't seem like Colgate out there (although, losing to CCSU didn't quite seem like Colgate out there either).

The whole cover story thing is stupid, IMO. The choices were so arbitrary, they don't make any sense. For each choice made by SI, there was a better choice in the same category. For instance, if a uniform was chosen because it was plain (Utah and perhaps Clempson), then how did they arrive at those choices insyead of Penn State?

If the choice was made because a uniform was too gaudy, then why Oregon and not FAMU?

Dumb, arbitrary cover.

Oh, and by the way......

I think the problem with the Air Force and maybe Utah uni's is the wide stripes of color running down the sides, under the arms and on the legs. That makes those uni's look horrid.

And how can ANYONE bash the Penn State uniform??? Those are, hands down, the classiest and best uniforms in college football. They are simple, understated and classic. Period.

Not the point. I like PSU's uniforms for their simplicity, also. However, it is obvious that plainness was one of the criteria that SI used to pick ugly uniforms. PSU's uniforms ARE plain, much more so than Utah's or Clemson's. That's why I said that the SI cover is arbitrary and stupid.

Nothing;they look fine to me.I don't think the Syracuse unis are all that bad either. They are right about Oregon and Wyoming though.

While we're on the topic of uniforms, how do you all feel about helmet-stickers? Personally I think it looks too cluttered, and kind of like you're in kindergarten. No offense to ASU (and other helmet-sticker using schools, OSU comes to mind).

the only schools i think it looks good on are FSU and OSU. Florida St. looks great when they have a few in the back in a diamond shape, and I think OSU looks good just because they have a plain helmet.

I really like AppSt. uni's though. That is a great "state-of-the-art" uni that looks clean.

As long as the stickers aren't too big, I don't mind.

Don't like 'em but don't care enough to say they shouldn't do them. xpeacex

I have never liked helmet stickers, period. They're rather gaudy. I have a strong distaste for Ohio State's helmet stickers. I kinda hate to say it, but that picture of the App St. player with a whole bunch on his helmet is rather gaudy as well. But that's just me......an opinion is like a butt, everyone has one but you don't care to much to hear it out.......xlolx

That App State player with all the gaudy stickers is Kevin Richardson. He picked up several of those during a certain quarterfinal playoff game last season! :>)

I knew that was coming......I could care less how many stickers he has on his helmet. I'd like to see an LB take a few of those stickers off this year, or at least put a nice scratch in them.xnodx

I thought those Minnesota unis were kind of cool. I remember when the NCAA made BYU change their unis. xlolx
I kindly present the ULM Warhawks xlolx

I actually like the helmets but think that the unis need some work.

I like all of those uniforms, except for Utah's and Iowa State's. Their uniforms are just too plain and they look just like NC State, Stanford, Wisconsin, Fresno State, and other who use boring red.

Oregon's isn't bad, but I liked the dark green and yellow things they used to have better.

But who am I to judge uniforms. I sort of liked Montana's old orange and yellow things they used to wear, and I'm probably alone on that one.

Nope I'm right there with you on Montana. I was introduced to them in the yellow and orange and then was really disappointed that they changed. I thought that the yellow and orange color-scheme was a way to really stand out.

Just having a little fun with you. Personally, I'd rather see a long rifle used over that Mountaineer head. They stack up nicely and don't take up near as much space. Never have been a fan of the new version of the Mountaineer since it was introduced back in 1999. Judging by the avitar I use you can probably I'm an old school traditionalist. Too much political correctness with the new mascot. No pipe, long rifle, or moonshine jug.
