Here's how these two stack up statistically:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49119276318_7911c4ba12_o.jpg

Looking at the numbers you'd think the rankings between these two should be switched around buy there's a sharp contrast in SOS being that UNI is from the MVFC, generally regarded as the strongest FCS conference and San Diego is from the Pioneer, generally regarded as the weakest FCS conference. According to Massey San Diego's SOS ranks 99th in the FCS and UNI's ranks 7th. Nonetheless it'll be worth checking out to see if the San Diego offense, ranked 1st in the FCS in yards per play, can crack UNI's stellar defense. UNI's offense has been hit with the injury bug so if San Diego can put up 20+ points in this game they've got a shot.

5dimes currently has UNI as a 12 points favorite, Massey predicts a 33-20 UNI win, and Sagarin also favors Massey by about 12 points although I'm sure UNI is well aware of what this same Torero program did in the first round of the 2016 and 2017 playoffs as a big road underdog.

I think UNI will still be a bit extra motivated after being snubbed for a seed and set to the play the team they had an argument to be seeded over if they win. Last year they kind of sleepwalked to a win over Lamar in the 1st round but I think this year they'll be a bit sharper and they win comfortably. Who to you have winning and why?

EDIT: Dammit! Meant to make the poll votes public not multiple choice. Oh well... I guess you can pick both teams to win if you really want to. :)

Well, you'll match up as well as you can with UNI since they're the exact opposite. Don't need to worry about their defense being solid but their offense can stagnate.

I wouldn't worry too much about USD being able to score points. Defense is their issue. What's funny is I'm not overly worried about USDb scoring...... More so UNI scoring.

Against non seeded trans this year UNI had given up

13 points in regulation to FBS top 25 Iowa State
14 garbage time points to SUU
6 to ISUo
14 to YSU
27 to USDr
6 to MOSU
10 to ISUr
9 to ISUB
7 to WIU

Of the 29 WSU scores 17 were in the first 10 minutes after a blown coverage on play 1 of the game, a fumbled ensuing kick return and a next possession INT. They had about 90 yards of offense after that.

SDSU was the beneficiary of 33% of UNIs turnovers on the season including half of our INTs.

NDSU was just a disaster though after about the 40 minute mark
So...

Along the lower edge of the outline along the Missouri border, the turf looks like skid stains from the east overview camera, which is the camera is use most.

It does not look like that from other cameras, so must be something with how the turf lays there. Pointing it out the the AD falls on deaf ears.

I agree. Something like 85-90% of undergrads come from Iowa, used to very much be a suitcase university. Thursday night was a big night on the Hill because so many people went home on weekends.

The gotten some great overhead still photos of the first-year class in the outline for marketing.

Getting better cameras - or better calibrating what is there - would help. But not with the skids, that is something with the turf in those spots from that angle.

We sat right in the middle of the the USD fans. With about 3 minutes left in the game a SUD fan that was about 3 2 rows behind us comes up to my daughter and takes off her "necklace" (most all of their fans had blue Christmas light necklaces on. She gives it to my daughter and has a conversation with her and walks away.

Comes back a minute later with a Nike supplied Torero team stocking cap and gives it to her.

Turns out it is the head coaches wife.

Made my daughter's weekend. Honestly the classiest group of visiting fans I can remember in years and years, even without that.

Their football is @USDFootball, athletics in general is @USDToreros, AD is @BillMcGillisUSD, doesn't look like the HC is on twitter, as near as I can tell, but the OC is @CoachChristianT and DC is @CoachBobbyJay. The UNI offense is not good, the scheme does not match our personnel.

Our defense is very stout, if the weather is bad next week in Bookings the first team to 10 may win it.

On a side note the officiating crew was horrid, I don’t know what conference they were or if, but I feel sorry for the schools that get those guys more often then we do.

Overall I want to say while I don’t think we played that we, San Diego was still a very good team.

Personally I think they should have been letting him attempt from that distance at home all year. There were a lot of times I felt like we should have been attempting a field goal from that distance and we would punt. More game situation kicks from that distance might have helped.

towards the end of halftime, he attempted a couple kicks from about that distance. one clanged off the left upright and out, another clanged off the right upright and out. I suppose it is only fitting that when he attempted that kick in the 2nd half it clanged off the crossbar and out.

at least it somewhat resembles a shade of green and not some gawdawful red or blue

skidmark by the Missouri border? so it's a realistic depiction of Missouri? xcoolx

It would be on the Iowa side of the border. Have extended family who live/lived in that bottom row of counties on the border and also spent some time down there for work a few decades ago ... so choosing to simply say, it sure looks like skid marks from camera they use from the east side press box. Yep, sure does.

Personally I think they should have been letting him attempt from that distance at home all year. There were a lot of times I felt like we should have been attempting a field goal from that distance and we would punt. More game situation kicks from that distance might have helped.

There have been times when UNI should have been doing anything but punting this season, simply because the punting has been so inconsistent. On the plus side, if not for the punter today - who is a DB - SD probably has a ST touchdown. Kibbee's punt-and-tackle saved that one.

And, yeah, Cook at kicker has been a really nice surprise. He is a true freshman. The projected starter - who was a starter two season ago - went down with injury before the first game of the year. Cook's first collegiate game was in front of 60k+ on the road at the 21st-ranked FBS team ... 4 for 4 on FGs and one PAT that day in a 3 OT loss. He is 1-2 50+ this season (50-yarder being the hit) and 3-4 between 40-49 yards until today.

I think this is our third punter this year and he's not even a punter. He actually had a couple good ones yesterday, but the main thing is that he didn't shank any.

I only remember the one that they got a hand on. AgainstSouth Dakota State the previous punter kicked two out of bounds for about 20 yards.

They had switched to Murphy earlier this year (from what I hear, partly because they liked what Kibby brought to punt coverage), but then realized that Murphy wasn't cutting it and switched back to Kibby doing the punting.
In any case, neither is really an ideal choice.

If UNI plays like that offensively next week, SDSU moves to the quarters pretty easily.

Not so fast.

UNI’s offense was garbage against USD(b). Remember that our offense has that same ability to be hot garbage when it counts the most. UNI will have a chance at revenge and I don’t see SDSU beating UNI twice in one season.

Previous to switching back to Kibby in the SDSU game.Kibby has punted all season. What are you talking about?

Murphy punted some this year but Kibby has been P1 all this year and all last year. I'm not sure Murphy punted at all last year of the year before

There was a 3 week span where they tried Murphy (USDr, MSU and ISUR). Kibby was averaging like 39 YPC. He's either boom or bust (which you'd expect from a safety doing the punting). Murphy came in and averaged like 37 ypc and couldn't get the distance Kibby can, so starting with ISUB they moved back to Kibby. Murphy has 1 punt of 50 yards (exactly 50). Kibby has 8 50 yarders, with a couple over 60. Kibby is still a solid 39-40 yard guy every on 95% of his punts. Murphy, who is actually a PK by training, isn't the punter that Kibby is.

Neither are fantastic punters.
Neither are punters.

Kibby averaged just under 40 YPP last year as well, while filling in for ****z.

Next year we should actually have a punter. Isaac Jorgensen is a true freshman this year that came in and competed with Cook for the starting kicker job and for the punting job. However, with Kibby being in the 40 YPP range they decided to redshirt Jorgensen. He was a 5* kicker (Kohl's Kicker Rankings) out of HS along with Cook.

I'm talking about Murphy taking the first 4 punts at SDSU and us switching back to Kibby ever since Murphy shanked two of them.
