Saints love those small-school players. Seems like Bushrod is doing a fine job for the Saints, who love his ability to play several positions along the line though they want to keep him at tackle.

The New Orleans Saints' coaching staff recently got their first extended look at the players they drafted last month and liked what they saw, especially from a couple of players who project as backups on the offensive line.

Guard Andy Alleman, one of their two third-round picks, and tackle Jermon Bushrod, the second of two fourth-round selections, made an impression on the staff during a three-day rookie minicamp.

That is not a bad thing considering the Saints are seeking some competition in their upcoming Organized Team Activities and training camp for backup positions along the line.

"The coach did single out Bushrod as one player who doesn't seem to be affected by the heat and humidity that plagued some of his new teammates."

Most NFL prospects are discovered through a traditional process that begins with scouts coming to practices and ends with players being invited to the league's combine in Indianapolis and workouts for individual teams.

Then there is the less conventional way the New Orleans Saints found Towson's Jermon Bushrod, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound offensive tackle taken in the fourth round in last month's draft.

"The computers," said Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt, "had nothing to do with this one."
