These guys don't get enough recognition. We talk about the RB's, QB's, and WR's all the time. I like to get a "Hog" thread going every year.

our offensive line will be one of...if not...the best in the SLC this year which is great for Bomar. 4 of 5 starters return that only allowed 8 sacks last year with none vs. Texas.

Montana's OL kind of underperformed last year. Being big is less important than being skilled. Normally of course the Griz have superb OLs and I imagine the 2007 unit will be good.

We had 3 youngin's playing last year that struggled the first half of the season. But the line really gelled the 2nd half of the season. Now we have Quinn coming aboard. The line is considered a strength by the Coaches this year.

The line took some heat for the sacks on Swogger but you need to watch Josh play. He was real picky about finding an open receiver and held the ball too long many times. The line can hold the Defense only so long, and if you are holding the ball 4-5 seconds looking through your receivers you'll get a lot of sacks.

NDSU has downsized their linemen over the past few seasons, putting more emphasis on speed and athleticism-

The two deep so far:

LG: 1, Jerrod Wagner, 6-4, 294, Sr. and Tyler Lekang, 6-3, 290, Sr.

The line was real young for the most part last year. I think the weakest area's were center and guard mainly because the 2 seniors that played center and some guard last year were injured or coming off injuries and I don't think either one was more than 80%.

Still we had 2 all conference linemen (if I remember right) and they, as well as, most of the rest of the line will be returning this fall. This could be one of the best OL in recent Griz memory. Certainly a strenght of the team.

I'm not tryin to hate on the Griz. In fact I like the 2007 squad quite a lot. Just pointing out that size, in and of itself, isn't all that crucial for linemen at the collegiate level. Of course its good if you can combine size, athleticism, and skill all in one.

Option teams want smaller, more mobile linemen. You can be 6-1 250 and be a killer lineman for an option team.

Add one year for all players, these are last years stats (roster not updated on JMUSports.com yet)

Fr. Ainsley, Brett OG 6'5" 295
So. Apted, Terrence OT 6'2" 320
r-Fr. Berry, Reggie OC 6'3" 295
r-Fr. Brooks, Dorian OG 6'3" 265
r-Fr. Clarke, Chris OG 6'3" 270
Fr. Costen, Zach OC 6'1" 280
r-Fr. Eason, Vernon OG 6'1" 315
r-So. Lemn, Scott OC 6'2" 280
r-So. Martin, Franklin OT 6'4" 345
r-Fr. Powell, Rahmad Ot 6'3" 300
Fr. Sherman, Theo OT 6'5" 265
Fr. Walker, Arthur OT 6'5" 300

A very young line. We lost Corey Davis and Mike Parham on the line.

That Montana line is huge! JMU's line has kind of 'slimmed down' from recent years.

Longhorn
May 19th, 2007, 08:14 AM
Of course Franklin Martin is not on the JMU team now pending resolution of an "acquaintance" rape charge. Yet in the "for what it's worth category" I read a recent depth chart coming out of Spring ball (before Franklin was suspended) that listed him at 360# (as opposed to last years 345). Makes you kinda wonder if perhaps Franklin's legal defense might be related to his weight. If 360# fell on top of me I'd sure as heck feel violated!

Yeah the Martin situation is indeed unfortunate. I simply included him because the roster hasn't been updated since the end of the season.

CSU starting OL ran about 280 last year. Looking at those coming back and who should fill in it should be around 285 or so this year. Mills got some real monsters the last couple of years and in about 2 years the OL should be over 300 average. With the new full time strength coach it may even help bulk these guys up a little sooner.

Yep, the initial legal news about Martin is tough all the way around. I'll admit it also surprised me as Franklin is really a big teddy bear...which is why he seemed to be stuck on the second squad. Even without Franklin, however, JMU's starting OL will avg. over 300 as Apted, Eason, Walker, Powell, and Lemn are the starters (at least for the moment).

I think this is a great thread, I agree these guys don’t get the credit they deserve. Furman had a lot of issues with the offensive line last season. Which usually provides the leadership for the O. Injuries and inexperience and IMO playing a finesse style did not fit the skill set of the 2006 line. New line coach Carroll McCray has brought a lot of intensity into the mix. Clay Hendrix was a loss but BL choosing a veteran coach was a smart move. The most potent Furman offenses are led by dominating physical lines, they usually are strong and move very well. It should be exciting to all Furman fans to have Hayes and Cockburn for 3 more years. These guys are mean and physically gifted. Haynes bench-pressed 445 as a freshman, Cockburn 425. Joel Bell is still the star of the oline for the next 2 years. Bell is massive. Menocal is the wildcard for Furman, Menocal rehab'ed last season after spot starting for Corey Stewart in 05. Menocal could shift things, causing Goolsby to move to tackle.

SR Reggie Goolsby 6-1 288 C I hear he’s playing smaller this season around 265
JR David Menocal 6- 2 273 C
RSO Will Landers 6-3 291 C
RFR Kyle Rae 6-0 265 C

C - John Steilner, SR. 6-1, 270lb

Shawn Sailor - 6-7/320 - FR

We aren't done recruiting, so he might bring in some transfers or some incoming freshman.

6'5", 6'6", 6'7", as freshman and sophomores, wow. My parents told me if I ate a lot of vegetables as a kid I would grow up big and strong. Apparently they were full of *****. Crazy how big some of these guys are. Remember when the NFL had like one or two 300 pound lineman and that was amazing? I think it was William Perry with the Bears, aka "The Fridge". He wouldn't even be considered big now.

Hopefully a bit bigger than last year, with another year's experience. We struggled with our running game in 2006.

Lehigh has 3 returning starters on the front five. All-League tackle Jim Kehs is 6'4" 310; Fifth year senior and co-capt. John Reese returns at center, 6'1" 270; Brendan Caffrey 6'2" 290; Patrick Casey 6'3" 300; Kevin Bayani 6'3" 260; Mike Dodson 6'2" 285;
I believe these would be the two-deep, but from what I hear a frosh or two may challenge for serious time.

When he was at Clemson in the early '80s, I saw The Fridge taking his young child to see Santa at one of the malls in Greenville. He had the broadest shoulders I have ever seen. He dwarfed old Saint Nick.

6-3, 315...believe he might have gotten cut already. I still think he's talented enough to land on his feet somewhere, if not first in NFLE.

NDSU has downsized their linemen over the past few seasons, putting more emphasis on speed and athleticism-

The two deep so far:

LT: 1, Nate Safe, 6-5, 310, Sr. 2, Michael Arndt, 6-6, 306, Fr.
LG: 1, Jerrod Wagner, 6-4, 294, Sr. and Tyler Lekang, 6-3, 290, Sr.
C: 1, Zach Harrington, 6-2, 295, Jr. 2, James Septak, 6-3, 292, Jr.
RG: 1, Ryan Foster, 6-2, 293, So. 2, Chris Wellenstein, 6-6, 291, Fr.
RT: 1, Gerry Ebel, 6-6, 306, So. and Keith Buckman, 6-5, 293, So.

I can't remember where I read or heard(probably Steve Hallstrom's interview) but Coach Bohl thought this would be his best offensive line since he has been NDSU's coach. Nate Safe and Zach Harrington should both be NFL prospects and All-American candidates.

At this point, OL is probably the biggest question mark for the Cats. I think this is what it looks like right now:

TE: Elliot Barnhardt, 6'3, 227, Jr.
T: Mike Person, 6'5, 264, Fr.
G: Dominic Sosini, 6'3, 293, So.
C: Jim Verlanic, 6'0, 260, Jr.
G: Jeff Hansen, 6'4, 286, Fr.
T: Peder Jensen, 6'6, 279, Sr.

Big question is the eligibility of Adam DeCock (T, 6'6, 307). Looking like Louis Saucedo (6'5, 327) will be ineligible. Tough to lose a couple of beasts like those. Overall, a real young, but very talented group.

Pretty small group. A couple young guys too. Will be interesting to see how they play.

The loss of DeCock and Saucedo is huge. Now two freshman will have to play.

Other guys who might be able to crack into the starting lineup:

FR Jeff Miller, 6'7 290
SO Neil Boyce, 6'3 314
FR Conrad Burbank, 6'4 274
FR Jesse Hoffman, 6'4 307
JR Chris Smith, 6'3 303

We have a LOT of young guys on this line. They will be good in a few years, hopefully they can be good right away.

Shame about Saucedo. hes a BIG KID xeekx . Nice to see Hansen move to G too, i think he'll eventually become an all BSC caliber G this year.
