View Full Version : TXST's New Video Board

The Bobcats follow up with scoreboards of their own, a year after fellow TSUS component Sam Houston State got their own scoreboards at all their venues. The SLC as a whole is really doing a great job at improving facilities - no complaints here!

The scoreboard looks good and is being made by Daktronics, who really has made a pretty penny on these things in recent years, SHSU's included. Daktronics if based in Brookings - heard of that FCS locale? :)

SAN MARCOS - Fans of Texas State University Bobcat sports teams will see dramatic changes in the future when they attend athletic events at Bobcat Stadium, Strahan Coliseum and the baseball and softball fields at Bobcat Field.

The Texas State University System Board of Regents has authorized the university to spend up to $1.5 million to install new scoreboards at Texas State sports venues. The package will also include new marquees on Aquarena Springs Drive in front of Strahan Coliseum and on the back of the new football board facing Aquarena Springs Drive and Post Road.

"We are very excited about this project and can't wait to get started," said Texas State Director of Athletics Larry Teis. "This will take the Bobcat game experience to a new and better level for our fans."

And I know the Bobcat fan base is very happy about this. It's a great upgrade and I wish your athletic department luck in getting the boards up before the season...

i just hope they start building it soon. it would be weird if they took out the old board then didnt finish the new one in time.

Pat can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the thing that took the longest was the whole electronic setup of it, because it's not just throwing the board up there. I think the board is constructed in South Dakota and brought down...

Pretty much the standard grade Daktronics FCS template.

I'd say every board Daktronics has put up in the last 5 years has looked about 95% like that one.

Daktronics has several different styles to chose from.

McNeese chose a style that would allow us to increase the size of the video board in the future and also allow us to add additional ads or statistic boards if needed.

I work for Daktronics. All kinds of different designs exist for video boards/scoreboards. I like the clean/square traditional look that Texas State has chosen.

Also note that the stats boards (rushing, passing, total) are actually full color matrix boards. They can be changed to other team stats, individual stats, or adverstising. It all depends on the ability of your operators. The possibilities are endless.

I like the square look as well.

I'm pretty sure you guys did the video board for JMU as well, whose shape looks alot like the design chosen by Texas St. It is a nice looking board at JMU, but the proposed design for Texas St. looks even nicer IMO.

My only complaint (and that of many JMU fans) is that our video board is too small by at least 200%!!! It's referred to as our "minitron" and is barely useable/readable as an instant replay tool. Hopefully the folks at Texas St. bought something more appropriate to the "scale" of Texas, where everything is supposed to be "bigger" right? xnodx At least that's what I told my wife when we were dating. xrolleyesx

That is just plain ignorant, why do you post about things that you know nothing about? xoopsx

Here is an idea check out the Daktronics web site, get a little educated and then let us know what you think. xnonono2x

Our friends from McNeese showed you there new board that does not look like Texas State's. Here is SDSU's and it too is different from the one that Bobcats are getting.

Like I said, they all look about the same.

They all have the following template:

Just about every new FCS videoboard has that. Including McNeese.

SDSU decided to get creative so they took the Down/To Go/Ball On/Qtr bar out of the main board and put them on separate sideboards.

Wow. I bet that took at least a month to design those modifications.

Who has gotten new videoboards in FCS recently?

SFA, Weber, UC Davis, Tx State, Sam Houston. Probably a lot more.

They all look like that.

I'm not saying it's a bad template at all. It's cheap and it works.

You’re kidding right? I mean you want to claim that "I'd say every board Daktronics has put up in the last 5 years has looked about 95% like that one." because they all have places for a video board, a place for each team's score, a place for what down it is, etc. We are talking about football boards and if that is what you are driving at then I bow before your superior intellect. xrolleyesx xlolx

If however you are smart enough to understand that what makes scoreboards different is the ascetics of how you arrange the display of this critical information or what you "wrap around" the functionality of a scoreboard then I challenge you again, to go threw the Daktronics web site and get educated.

Either way I think you should quite while you are behind; you make yourself look foolish when you post about what you know little or nothing about.

JMU board. It is pretty small. About 13'x17'. Tx States new board will be about 16'x25.5'. SD States board is 16'7" x 28'7". Too bad JMU purchased a board too small.

By the way UT-Austins video board dims..55'6"x134'. Approximately 19 times larger than TX State.

I knw UNI had a lot of troubles with their Daktronics boards they put in the new basketball arena. I'm not sure there was a game where they all worked properly. It sucks when the player foul points boards are out of comission.

Obviously FBS and NFL teams can afford more custom equipment.

I guess you missed my point, I will try and spell it out for you. You seem to be hung up on the "format" that you feel that you discovered. My point is that is the same format that is used from High School ball all the way to the NFL. All that changes is what you wrap around the basic format, that is what makes the scoreboard different. I can see a difference between all the scoreboards on this thread, I hope you can too. xprayx

Thanks for the inside info! Glad to read that Tx St. is going to have something more useful. Hopefully JMU will revisit it's "minitron" when it gets serious about building permanent seating in the endzone where the board is now located. As a UT alum I've seen images of the Texas board which is fantastic. Do you have an idea what the UT board cost, as compared to the Texas St. board?
