View Full Version : Upgrading the Turf at SHSU

TexasTerror
May 9th, 2007, 07:27 PM
Bowers Stadium will be getting some new turf once the track and field season finishes out later in May according to our athletic director's "View from the Corner Office" column that he puts out monthly.

SHSU will be installing "REALGRASS", which is part of a company called Sportfield, L.L.C. Among other locations in Texas where this turf finds itself at home is the Alamodome in San Antonio and Texas Stadium in Irving, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

We're really excited about this new turf and hopefully opposing quarterbacks find themselves spending a bit too much time introducing themselves this coming season...xthumbsupx

Why would you not want to become a Bearkat :D

Best Video Board-Texas State's will be here next year. It supposedly will be the best in the conference. Its wait and see.

Best Weight room-SHSU has addressed their need for a new weight room. SHSU is however shared by all athletes. TXST football only shares with track. With it being in the End Zone Complex TXST has the best for football.

Best Academics in the SLC. xnonox I dont think so. xlolx

Best overall athletic department. xbawlingx

Why would you not want to become a Bearkat? Hunstville....SHSU....East Texas.

Now if you want to talk Baseball/Softball Complex-SHSU xbowx

Videoboard size has nothing to do with the quality of the board. I present SMU and SFA as proof, all who are larger than ours. Even UT...all they do is instant replays and other things with lousy graphics.

Our athletes have had higher GPAs than the rest of the SLC for the past 2 years.

SHSU has led the Commish Honor Roll placements for several semesters now while also having the top GPA in conference amongst student-athletes. Point SHSU.

I can agree with that, but the statement that SHSU has the best academics in the conference isnt true. SHSU and TXST both have programs that are superior to the others. So saying SHSU has the best academics needed clarification.

My Quote about the athletic department showed a guy crying. xbawlingx I wasnt reffering to the athletes.

Yeah I agree. Each has its stronger departments. I did orgionally meant it to be in reference to the athlete GPAs

Perhaps they would rather win SLC championships. xsmiley_wix Like the ELEVEN SLC Championships the Cowboys have won, which of course is as many as all of the 7 other SLC teams have combined. ;)

And I think McNeese led the SLC in the new Videoboard department when we installed our new board before the 05 season. Hell our old one was better than most SLC schools have now. McNeese has had a video board for over 10 years before our new one was installed.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/tknodel/McNeese%202006/DSCN0247.jpg

And of course we break ground after this season on our new 17,500 square foot field house with a new 7,000 SF weight room complete with a 40 yard indoor running track, new dressing room, new players lounge area, new and expanded coaches offices, new meeting rooms, new audio visual rooms, an expanded ticket office, and a new Hall of Fame Lobby area.

http://www.mcneesefieldhouse.com/images/fieldhouse01.jpg

The building will also house a 2nd floor 420 seat Luxury End Zone Club House that will give us nearly 800 Club and Private Suite Seats between our Sky Ranch (Press Box), also the best and largest in the SLC.

I have personally seen McNeese's video board in action. I dont think they have the graphic abilities as you pastle, but they do a great/better job of using it to get their crowd going. They really know how to use that video board to get the crowd going.

If you look on Doc's Shots on http://www.geauxcowboys.com under the 2006 football pictures, I'm sure you will see plenty of shots of it turned on.

We have a Media Production Company that does all the video for our games, they have tons of animated stuff, they have other higlite video, great intro's for the team. They can put our players pictures up on the screen after they do something good. Of course every play is subject to instant re-play.

We make a ton of money from full commercials on the board too.

THey also do a good job of working our fans into a frenzy and getting us to ring our cow bells by playing the SNL version of "Feel the Reaper" with Will Farrel playing the cowbell. Our fans love it. They also do eht Kiss Cam which is funny too.

The screen stays very busy and the sound system is awesome.

The cool thing about the guys that run the board is that they are only 20 or 21 years old. They own their own Media Production Company and they are McNeese Students. Sharp kids.

Its not about who has better abilities, its just how you use the board. The only other school I've seen besides Sam that uses their board for more than commercials, replays, and highlights is A&M. Everybody else dosn't do much with their board.

That's one thing we wern't able to do this year is getting the crowd into the game. We have some plans, just didn't have time to implement them.

Note the damage to our scoreboard at the top. But overall it did well in a 12 hour 140 mph wind didn't it? xsmiley_wix

Also, we don't have field turf, our players and coaches all seem to prefer natural grass. We spend a lot of money every year maintaining it.

As you can see in this shot, it looks almost fake.

How do you really decide what school's field turf is better than another?!?!?! I've been to Texas State, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana and all the fields seem pretty comparable to me. What makes the SHSU turf so special? Because it will have orange in it?

This year, the schools in the SLC will have every brand of turf that currently exists.

NWS and TxSU have the same thing. You guy's will have AstroTurf, SLU has SPINT TURF, SFA has Field Turf, and SHSU will have something new too.

I guess I will have to ask McNeese players, who will still be playing on the real thing, who has the best fake stuff after next year when they make all the rounds.

But I can tell you right now that several of them have stated in the past that they thought SLU's SPRINT Truf seemed to feel better than the rest.

But most say they like the real stuff. I just don't know how much longer McNeese can keep spending nearly $50K a year maintaining it. They could spend less if they put in the fake stuff.

Sounds like a good idea...although, you'll have to wait 2 full seasons before finding out which team has the best artificial surface. I'm curious to see how the turf in Thibodaux will be since there will be no rubber in-fill like other products.
