As a matter of fact, both SoCon schools Furman and Citadel are the 2 smallest schools currently ranked in the FCS football poll, the 3rd smallest school Nicholls St. is roughly twice the size of Furman or Citadel

Interesting fact about The Citadel...our current location was not the original one. We were in downtown Charleston from 1842 to 1922 when we moved to the current location. About a mile and a half further up the peninsula.

A second interesting, infamous, fact, is our original main building is now an Embassy Suites. Yeah, not many schools can say that...or would want to most likely.

SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA

Present interesting facts: We have three players on our roster who have started multiple games at QB for FBS schools (two in the SEC). Two have started FBS games at both Alabama and Ole Miss while the other was the first and only true freshman to start a game at QB for a Steve Spurrier coached team.

General facts: Good Morning America host and former ESPN anchor, Robin Roberts, is a Southeastern Louisiana alum, and is a member of our athletics Hall of Fame (basketball). Legendary Jazz Pianist, Bill Evans, is also a Southeastern grad. Our university is one of the few in the nation with a textbook rental program.

I believe the Watterson Tower claim for ISU is that it is the tallest POINT between Chicago and St. Louis. Taking into account the 300 ft. Watterson's base is at about 800' elevation where as Springfield's 350' hotel base elevation is 600ish.

North Carolina A&T is the largest HBCU in the country with an enrollment of 12,897.

North Carolina A&T is leading producer of African-American engineers with master's and doctorate degrees. The university is also a leading producer of African-American psychology undergraduates; minority certified public accountants, landscape architects, veterinarians, and agricultural graduates.

On February 1, 1960, four male freshmen helped spark the civil rights movement in the South. Jibreel Khazan, Joseph McNeil , Franklin McCain , and David Richmond "sat in" at an all white eating establishment (Woolworth's) and demanded equal service at the lunch counter. The actions of the four freshmen gained momentum as other students of the university joined them in their non-violent protest to desegregate Woolworth's lunch counter, which became known as the Greensboro sit-ins . By the end of July 1960, Blair, McNeil, McCain and Richmond were dubbed the Greensboro Four.

Watterson Towers (dormitory) at Illinois State University in Normal claims to be the tallest building between Chicago and St. Louis. Factually inaccurate as it may be Springfield Wyndham Centre is actually 352 feet, taller than the 298.5 ft. Watterson Towers boasts. Watterson now claims to have the tallest observable reference point between Chicago & St. Louis meaning you can stand on the roof and look out.
If I can add to the ISUr list of interesting facts ... our football stadium is named after a former coach Howard Hancock, who's lifetime record from 1931 to 1944 was 57-45 ... not exactly the kind of record you would hope for in someone you named your stadium after. He did set one record and it is probably still holding in some way ... he also had 19 ties, some kind of record at the time.

And you guys wonder how we can go 6-5 every year and maintain our optimism ???

Apparently they were NAIA back then. Then he hit growth spurt and became 5th pick in 1987 draft, which Bulls traded for ... the rest is history .. from UCA team manager turned walkon to 6 NBA championships, 2 gold medals, made NBA top 50 all time players list.

Nicholls State was once part of LSU:

Tax-supported and co-educational, the institution first opened its doors on Sept. 23, 1948, as Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University. In 1956, the Louisiana Legislature separated Nicholls from LSU and authorized it to develop four-year curricula. Thus, in September 1956, the former junior college began operation as Francis T. Nicholls State College and granted its first degrees in May 1958. Act 93 of the State Legislature in 1970 changed the name to Nicholls State University.

Its namesake:

The university is named in honor of Francis Redding Tillou Nicholls, who was born on Aug. 20, 1834, in Donaldsonville, La. After graduating from West Point, he practiced law in South Louisiana. He rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Civil War, during which he was a prisoner of war and lost his left arm and leg. He returned to his Napoleonville law practice, and the Louisiana State Democratic Party nominated him for governor in 1876. His election is generally considered to mark the end of Louisiana’s political Reconstruction and the re-establishment of “Home Rule.”

I believe Stenerud was the first kicker in the NFL to kick soccer style, with the instep instead of the toe. Rumor is that he was on a skiing scholarship to Montana State and was watching football practice one day, particularly the kickers. He then demonstrated to the coaches a better way to kick the football, and he was then asked to join the team.

Yeah, after living next to NJ for so long and seeing firsthand how nice a place it is, it's almost a certainty that when people say bad things about the place in my hearing, they are going to get schooled whether they like it or not. Breaking into the next table's conversation at an Ohio Arby's and then get banned for life? Hypothetically worth it.

Yeah, but the GOAT kicker went to SDSU ;)

He’ll be a a HOF’er once her retires. Joining the other NFL HOF’er from SDSU, Jim Langer. Langer was the center for the undefeated Dolphins team and also was a very good baseball player during his time at state. He passed away at the end of the summer this year.

Another notable everyone knows, Daktronics was started by SDSU alums. You might have heard of them.

Also, the Briggs in Briggs and Stratton motors was a SDSU graduate and designed his first motor when attending SDSU. Stratton was just the money side of things. I also tailgate right by the library that was named after him.

As I recall the story about Stenerud, he was on the ski team, the team needed a kicker, and the coaches asked him to try kicking the football (as he'd grown up playing soccer).

Rankin was the first woman elected to the House (first woman to hold federal office, IIRC?). She voted against entering BOTH world wars (the only one to vote in opposition?). She was a UM grad, back when it was called MSU.

Also, Steneruud holds the record for the longest field goal attempt, 103 yards. It was so windy the punted ball came back farther than it was kicked so they used a FG kicker.

Little known fact about the fabulous Fargo Dome is that it was originally built to be a Great Wolf Lodge but Great Wolf Resorts closed it down because so many Nodak kids almost drowned. It turns out that their extra thick craniums make their heads disproportionately heavy and when they jumped in the water they would flip over and sink to the bottom like a kid's dive stick. The City of Fargo purchased the facility and repurposed it into an event arena.

Thank god the city stepped in, if the same situation played out in Cedar Falls their would just be a lot less Iowans around.

Plus those water slides in the locker room are a great recruting advantage for the Bison over the rest of the valley.

UCA has won 3 national championships at the NAIA level. The latest was in 1991. As much as division I football has it's attractions, I sure miss the rough grind it out ball playing at the lower levels. Those kids know they have little chance to go pro so they lay it all out on the field. Here a grainy two minute clip of UCA winning it in 1991. What a game! Dig the 90s music too...xlolx

Sell me on the beauty of Newark and Elizabeth, bought a car on Ebay and spent a couple days there finalizing the transaction and had to get tags in Elizabeth, kissed the ground in PA when I crossed the border driving the car back to God's country (North Dakota). Just kidding but Jersey does get bashed a lot because a lot of their major cities are crap holes. I have been there on business a couple times and there are some real nice areas.

Not many people know this, but Princeton is in New Jersey (!!!) which is a surprisingly pleasant state and not just a collection of overlapping Superfund* sites and Newark.

Seriously, New Jersey is a really nice state.

On Feb. 15, in a smoky Oklahoma casino somewhere off Interstate 44, Trey Lippe made his professional boxing debut in front of about 1,000 cowboys, mulleted gamblers and starry-eyed fans looking for the next Great White Hope. The fight wasn't publicized much outside the eastern part of the state because, if word spread that Tommy Morrison's son had taken up boxing, it would've drawn far too much hysteria for a young man who didn't know how to jump rope six months earlier.

I think SDSU beat them in the Fargodome last season too on a last second touchdown pass. SDSU has had NDSU's number in the regular season that past couple of years. They just can't beat them in the playoffs. It would be nice to see SDSU and NDSU on opposite sides of the bracket this year. I am so tired of watching SDSU @ NDSU in the playoffs year after year. If they meet in Frisco or in Brookings then that would be more interesting. If it's in Fargo in the playoffs SDSU will lose. It's been proven too many times already.

Edit: Haha forget that. It was 2 years ago SDSU won in the last seconds. Wow....time flies.

Yeah, that was 2016 that SDSU won on a last second 4th down TD in the Fargodome. They actually dominated the game far more than that scenario would indicate they did.

SDSU is the only team to beat NDSU more than once since 2011 but they've also lost to them the most (10 times including 7 in a row from 2011-2015) in that timeframe as well.
