Lots of proud football history in the Patriot League. Doesn't seem to be enough to get anyone to make the necessary changes. Lots of damage has already been done, but at what point does it become irreparable? This upcoming week looks to be one of darkest in league history. My guess is 0-7.

At this point it is up to our Presidents to fix a clearly broken system of restrictions. It wont happen until one or more schools force the issue, ala Fordham.
In the meanwhile, this year we have every team, save Hoyas, in rebuilding mode. Always painful and made so much harder here under PL rules.

Likins was gone before schollies. Original conference formed at the behest of the Ivies. Fr,Brooks and Likins were the motivators for sure. PL was very competitive preschollie with a number of teams nationally ranked.
Neither are responsible for our current mess. This mess falls squarely on the shoulders our our current Council and on to one degree or another individual school administrations.

I just noticed that TJ Holl has been basically regulated to a bench warmer at Louisville through 4 games (1 solo, 1 ast tackle). He was a such a great player for 'Gate last year. He really should be getting more out of his final year of eligibility.

Moving on up, record-wise. I am, that is, 3-1 on the week, 17-7 for the season. Not as fun (or difficult) when the odds are decidedly against the League, but here we are. It probably doesn't get better this week, but I suppose that's good for the picking record. Silver linings and all that.

Holy Cross at Syracuse Syracuse Full credit to the Cross for scheduling up, but I'm not a big fan of 2 FBS games. Yes Colgate does it in 2020, and no I don't like that either, but in this as in many things, noone asked my opinion. The Cuse hasn't quite gotten the same traction they did a year ago, but even a diminished Orange will be too much for a game Crusader defense and less-so offense.

Merrimack at Lehigh Lehigh Undoubtedly the best chance at a win for the League this weekend as the Hawks host a team on the rise. Literally, that is, as the Warriors transition to Division I. Top D-II teams are more than a match for a good chunk of FCS, though I would not put Merrimack in that tier. I suspect MC is dangerous, especially for a team that hasn't quite found a gear yet, but I'll take Lehigh finding a few plays to get in the win column at home.

Georgetown at Columbia Columbia Is there an object lesson to be learned in Columbia's ascent? Ascent is probably the wrong word, but certainly improvement from previous doormat status. Hiring Bagnoli is probably not an option for Patriot League schools, but you have to be impressed with that program becoming competitive in the Ivy League. I guess a trip to NYC even in a year where you get Fordham at home is a nice add to the schedule.

Richmond at Fordham Richmond Speaking of Fordham, the Rams get an interesting game at home against Richmond. Not so much interesting in the sense that I would pick Fordham, but am a bit curious about what the Spiders actually have this year. Big win over Jacksonville before big losses to BC and Elon. I wouldn't say Richmond is going to contend in the CAA, but Fordham is probably closer to the Dolphins than the others.

Pennsylvania at Lafayette Pennsylvania We said nice things about the Leopards after they put up some points against SHU, so of course they follow that with a single TD against Albany. The lesson, as always, is never trust Lafayette. Quakers are Ivy contenders, but don't be surprised if the Pards keep this one close for a bit. Because of course they will.

Princeton at Bucknell Princeton Curious to see where the Tigers are, coming off their title campaign. Another tough matchup for the Bison, really hard to see how they get on track. This team could really have used a weaker matchup or two to build a little momentum for the new coach. Too late now, I suppose. If the defense can get some stops against a good Tiger attack, that might be something to build on with PL play on deck.

Colgate at Dartmouth Colgate In spite of the result, I thought the Raiders showed a few things starting the comeback against Maine. Injuries are the biggest concern, as at some point you start to run out of bodies. Been a few years since the 'Gate played in deserto, nice to see the Green again. We'll see how nice it feels after Saturday, but if they can string together some consistency (and stop giving up kickoff return touchdowns!), the Raiders could be in this one.

Yes, I agree. The PL concept, to me is what college athletics should aspire. To me, the problems have gotten worse since we went to the scholarship model, but with both arms tied behind our backs with limited rosters and no redshirting. Fred Dunlap told me the year before scholarships took effect that it was big mistake for the reasons we are now experiencing. I think the Presidents at Holy Cross, Colgate, Fordham and Lehigh would be interested in improving our process, but I don't get the sense that their counterparts at Lafayette, Bucknell and Georgetown have any concern.

Can't see the Cross doing much here other than getting out of dome healthy. 'Cuse 45-17

Lehigh finally sees the win column, but something tells me it won't the won't be 'Mary Mack'. Erstwhile Engineers, 31-21.

Columbia the gem of the Island...of Manhattan. Lions 32-24.

Fordham trying to figure out how to get out a tangled web gets no help from Spiders...35-21

The Penn is mightier than the Leotards, 31-17

Princeton at Bucknell across the street in Sjoka Arena would be interesting. This one in Matthewson won't be. Tiggers...45-10

Pre-season I would have picked 'gate, but can't based upon the returns to date. Big Green in what should be a competitive game..28-24.

Syracuse, orange and purple on the field at the same time will not be a pretty sight
Lehigh, better not take Merrimack lightly just because they are in transition
Columbia, giving the home team the edge but Hoyas could pull the upset
Richmond, CAA rules PL
Penn, week 2 improvement for the Quackers should doom the Pards
Princeton, top Ivy vs bottom PL, enough said
Dartmouth, QB injuries make for a tough day for Gators

Agree PL is still split as to football's future. A bit better than it was during the initial process. Cross seems more solidly pro schollies and football. My sense tho is the Gate and Lehigh along with Fordham perhaps will be the ones pushing for by law reform. Hoyas will support if they get a pass on the cap limits. Bucknell and Lafayette will oppose. Cross will again be undecided.

And we sally once again into the Valley if Ls.

Syracuse. Crusaders may hang in for a while but outmatched.
Lehigh. A W of any sort is crucial. Almost as important is putting an O on the field that can score points consistently.Flashes of effectiveness will not bode well going forward.
Columbia. Hoyas could with some luck stage an upset.
Richmond. Two mediocre teams but UR mediocre at a higher level than Rams.
Penn. Pards may put up some stats. A W would require a mass return on injured players and Penn overlooking this game.
Dartmouth. No Brenerman. No W.
A future upside for the PL. Conference schedule starts. Guaranteed that Ws and Ls will even out. xeyebrowx

Syracuse 52 Holy Cross 13 - I don't think this will be a complete disaster but it won't be pretty. That's for sure.....
Lehigh 31 Merrimack 13 - This is a must win for Lehigh. A loss would be the worst in the 30+ years I've been following Lehigh football.
Columbia 27 Georgetown 24 - I wanted to take the Hoyas but the odds favor the home team. This would be a solid win for Georgetown and the PL...
Richmond 35 Fordham 27 - The Spiders are pretty bad this year and the Rams are better than last season so this won't be a replay of 2018's 52-7 debacle.
Penn 38 Lafayette 21 - The Quakers are contender in the IL, the 'Pards are a contender for the "FCS Bottom 10".
Princeton 62 Bucknell 17 - This might be the biggest miss-match of the PL football season. Even worse than all of the FBS games.
Dartmouth 37 Colgate 14 - The Raiders are looking at their 6th straight double digit loss. Can't build a legit program tanking like that....

LFN might be the closest insider we have. I have a few people closely associated with some of the PL programs but no one close enough to really get any good details. I have to believe the coaches are texting each other about the situation. The AD's also have to be aware. What that amounts to is anyone's guess.....

The Pioneer is definitely better than the Patriot League this year at the top. To be fair, Davidson is on the rise but Georgetown may well finish in the top 2-3 of the PL again this year. Somehow, as of a week ago, the computer rankings had the Patriot League rated higher than the NEC. I have no idea how that's possible.

Lehigh wins 10-3.....this game was absolutely awful. Lehigh had the execution of the Riker's Island prison team. The only thing that saved them was defense and some individual plays on offense. The mistakes were numerous and the QB shuffling is mind boggling. The OL is as bad as I can remember. The coach does not seem to be getting the most of the team. It's not as bad as last year but it's still really poor. Last year there was at least legitimate excuse.

One quibble owl. OL is again the issue. It is atrocious. QBs were shaky but some of that was the constant pressure. OL missed blocks. A complete muddle. The bye week did nothing to shape up the line. No OL equals no offense. Zay Hill and Nat Hope gave us some spark at RB.

I agree! Georgetown is starting to live up to expectations. There's no doubt in my mind they're better than Davidson. They absolutely deserved to be put in the mix with HC and Fordham. Although, I still hesitate a little on HC. UD (who I don't think is all that great) lost 17-14 to Pitt. HC was basically out of today's game early in the second quarter. The Crusaders really haven't shown much this year other than a real ugly win over a UNH team in a tough spot to open the season. I still have faith in Chesney though. Penn scores touchdowns on back-to-back possessions and converted three 3rd and longs (at least 7 yards to go) on the drive. The Quakers lead the Leopards 14-10 with 14 seconds left in the 2nd quarter.

TD Quakers with 15 seconds left before half. Lafayette has played tough but the Quakers look pretty good imo. 'Pards need to come out strong in the 3rd if they want a legit chance at wining this.

14-10 Penn

I was already feeling high on the win against Richmond. After reading through SpiderNation's forum about the game... well, seems they are taking the loss pretty hard. "No CAA team should ever lose to a Patriot League team." xshhhx

Nor are they Stony Brook. The Spiders are definitely down right now. This loss really shouldn't be the THAT surprising imo based on how both teams have played to start the year. Both are definitely average to likely below average teams imo...

Penn takes advantage of a key switch of field position over three possessions and scores their third touchdown of the day. The Quakers lead Lafayette 21-10 with about 11 1/2 minutes to go to the 4th quarter.

Yes we are down right now compared to where we have been in years past, but we still have some talented players and Fordham did what they needed to do to beat them. Congrats on the win.

Lafayette forces a Penn turnover inside the Leopards’ 5 yard line, and then drives 80 yards for a touchdown. They also convert the 2 point conversion. Penn leads 21-18 with 2:04 left in the 4th quarter.

Penn was inside the 'Pard 5 but fumbled the ball. Leopards go right down the field for a TD. Then run the "philly special" for a 2pt conversion! This one ain't over yet...

You'll rise again, no question. The Richmond fans in attendance were fantastic folks and best of luck to you all for the rest of the season.

After Lafayette scores 8 points to pull within 21-18, Penn needs only three plays, all runs, and 21 seconds to drive 75 yards for a response TD. The Quakers lead the Leopards 28-18 with 1:43 left.

Great question! Colgate just had a 17 play drive that made it all the way to the Dartmouth 1. But they couldn't score!!! Awful offense....

Colgate's last 6 games...
35-0 Loss
34-14 Loss
48-7 Loss
38-10 Loss
35-21 Loss
38-3 Loss

Not sure if Sweeney had a 6 game stretch this bad. 'Gate can't use "tough schedule" as an excuse as this is the standard they hold themselves to. Hunt is now 12-28 against OOC competition. And Colgate swapped out Cal Poly for Western Michigan (they'll play 2 FBS games) next year because a Big Sky opponent in Hamilton wasn't a big enough challenge.

That has be one of the biggest FCS OOC wins for Hoya Saxa, no?

They have beaten Ivy teams before (Cornell, Brown, Princeton).

You do get that Dartmouth has several NFL prospects on defense, right?

It could be the NE Patriots defense out there. Find a way to get a yard. They managed 70 or so of them to get to that point....

The Indians are very good but somehow I don't think "several" of their defensive 11 will be on NFL defenses ala Reggie Williams someday

Current PL losing streaks
Bucknell 10 (last win @ Holy Cross 9/29/18), Bison have lost 16 out of their last 17 games dating back to the end of the 2017 season.
Lafayette 8 (last win @ Fordham 10/27/18)
Colgate 6 (last win Playoffs vs JMU 12/1/18)

Not surprisingly. Lehigh scored at the end of UCD game and was not allowed to go for PAT. New rule now in NCAA about not risking injury over unnecessary plays.

I think the PL wide open for anyone...other than Bucknell, to win the championship. Some teams with significant injury issues and with the smaller rosters, it has a bigger impact. I would not be surprised to see Shoup start for Lehigh at Colgate next week. His legs add a much needed additional dimension to the offense.
