A Plan: Leaving Duke helped Patrick

By Bill Cole
JOURNAL REPORTER

Ben Patrick might be the second tight end drafted this weekend, after Greg Olson of Miami.

Ben Patrick rescued his football career last season and now stands a good chance of being picked on Saturday, the first day of this weekend’s NFL Draft.

All he needed to become an appealing tight-end prospect was to take advantage of an NCAA rule and make a risky move. Fed up with losing, he left Duke after graduation and enrolled at Delaware - with one year of eligibility in hand.

He is certain that it was one of the smartest moves he has ever made in football.

I had posted a few articles on him on the Pros board on AGS since the stories relate to the NFL draft. Below are those articles:

Philadelphia Inquirer:

Another one from his hometown Savannah paper:

Inquirer Staff Writer

Ben Patrick never considered himself a Division I-AA football player, and for most of his career he wasn't.

When the NFL draft begins tomorrow, Patrick, a tight end from the University of Delaware, could be the highest-picked player with local roots. They are not deep-seated roots, but are local roots nevertheless.

Originally from Georgia, Patrick played three seasons at Duke, where he received his degree in African American studies last year. He took advantage of a new NCAA rule that allowed graduating seniors to transfer and be immediately eligible if they had a year of eligibility remaining.......

Yeah, Mods sorry if it is in the wrong place. I thought the article spoke very well of Delaware and its fans. Not just exclusively about Patrick's draft status.
