Jamarkus McFarland - Assistant Coach (DT)

JaMarkus McFarland, one of the most heralded prep players to come out of nearby Lufkin, Texas, joined head coach Colby Carthel’s coaching staff in January of 2019 as the Lumberjacks’ defensive tackles coach. He arrives back at his east Texas roots after serving as a defensive graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma, the last three seasons (2016-18).

A four-year letter winner at defensive tackle for the Sooners (2009-12), McFarland appeared in 47 games and made 22 starts at Oklahoma. Named to the All-Big 12 Conference Freshman Team by ESPN, McFarland went on to claim three-straight Academic All-Big 12 First Team selections and finished his Sooner career with 81 total tackles, 17 of which were for a loss, 7.5 sacks, an interceptions and two pass breakups.

Following his playing days in Norman, McFarland enjoyed a career in the Canadian Football League and had a brief stint in the NFL. The Lufkin native was rated as the second-best player in the nation by some outlets coming out of high school and was ranked as the No. 6 defensive tackle by ESPN and No. 7 player in the state of Texas by Rivals. As a star for the Panthers, McFarland’s college recruitment was chronicled in a memorable New York Times piece.

After his professional football career ended, McFarland worked under legendary Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and associate head coach and defensive coordinator Mike Stoops during the 2016 season. McFarland remained a part of the Sooner football program when Lincoln Riley took over the reins and worked under both Mike Stoops and assistant head coach/defensive tackles coach Ruffin McNeil for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

During McFarland’s time as a graduate assistant in Norman, Oklahoma posted an impressive 35-6 record with only two losses each season and three consecutive Big 12 titles. The Sooners made three New Year’s Six bowl appearances, including claiming the 2017 Sugar Bowl with a 35-19 win over Auburn and reaching the 2019 College Football Playoff (CFP) semifinals.

McFarland is a 2013 graduate of Oklahoma where he received a bachelor’s degree in human relations. He currently resides in Nacogdoches.
