Should there be more such series, even if it only involves a few teams from each conference given the scheduling restrictions? Or should we give teams more freedom to schedule above and beyond their usual competition?

I like this for MVFC and ISUr. Currently we are bit locked up in our home & home with 100+ year rival EIU, plus an FBS, and then a FCS patsy game. But we did this with NAU and host them this year because this season has extra week this year .. so we have 12 games. I'd like to see us loosen up the EIU game to open things up more for Big Sky challenge games. Maybe alternate Big Sky home&home games with EIU home&home to ensure we get 6 home games and 5 away games. But I like the concept of establishing "regional" rivalries in this way ... familiarity should make the rivalry more interesting over time, as opposed to randomly playing teams from wherever.

Why don't we get an Ivy League vs. Anyone of Worth series going?

Likely because teams from the conference of "Anyone of Worth" might not feel this is worth anyone's effort. It is debatable whether this is right or wrong, but the perception might be that the worth in this case would be a one-way street.

Conferences likely need to be paired up based on (1) regionality, and then (2) by strength. That is why a BSC-MVFC challenge works and why an Ivy-Patriot (informal) challenge works. I would be curious to hear thoughts on how one might propose to do this with 13 conferences and perceived/measured (Sagarin) conference strengths.

Oops, misread the original thread title.

I’d say having teams in the same metro area or somewhat larger region would be beneficial, but if those series don’t already exist, there are probably many non-football reasons why they don’t exist.

I will say I’d like to see Penn and Villanova to start playing regularly again, especially if Villanova is going to play weak non-conference schedules like they are this coming year.

Rivalries need to develop on their own, they can't occur by a contrived matchup of teams from different conferences. Montana vs NDSU was a natural rivalry at the point in time they scheduled a home and home series several seasons ago. Harvard vs UNH would have been a rivalry during 10+ years they were perennially the two best FCS teams in the Northeast. But I don't see how scheduling the 7th best team from the CAA against the 5th best team in SoCon is going to create a rivalry, the schools could be located 1000+ miles apart and very few fans would know much, if anything, about the opponent.

Or some times, within a conference.

Contrived or not, the Ivy League has grown fond of "opening" against the PFL. Of course, the ivies scrimmage each other in week 0, but the Pioneers are often the first official Sept opponents, because the Ivies want non-scolarship competitors.

Dartmouth plays two from the PFL this year (just one from the Patriot), yet even the Big Green Indians don't go into injun territory (the Central time zone).

They are not going to Fort Des Moines without a cavalry escort.

ln a city named after the Sioux River, Augustana may join the Pioneer, but probably won't be getting Ivy League visitors. And to think how hard they worked to brick their street and build an airport ...

I think this is more about conference rivalries than team rivalries. However, a conference rivalry then requires a critical mass of games to get people on board. OOC matchups here and there will not do this, but if there were 10+ (OOC) games between the MVFC and the CAA every year, for instance, supporters of those particular conferences then start comparing d*** sizes, kind of like we do annually here on AGS.

The Ivy and Patriot did this throughout the mid-to-late 1990s. It was rare for an Ivy team to play a non-PL team in that era.

I think there were reasons why the arrangement ended. People got bored with it.
