Multiple sources close to the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff athletic department confirmed Wednesday that the contract of Director of Athletics Craig Curry will not be renewed when it expires on June 30 and that the university has begun the process of seeking a permanent replacement to head its 15-sport program, The Commercial learned.

Chancellor Lawrence Davis Jr.’s decision not to retain Curry was reportedly based on a number of factors related to his performance in five years as athletic director, most notably the department’s continuing financial struggles that have grown increasingly worse over the past three years.

Davis, who was traveling out of state Wednesday, will hold a meeting with all of the university’s coaches and athletic staff members at 2:30 p.m. today to discuss the decision and his course of action going forward, a source within the athletic department said.

A university spokesperson indicated that Davis would be able to return a phone call from the Commercial when he returned to Arkansas Wednesday evening but Davis did not return the call.
