Just finished 2nd of 2 signing days. I realize it is a crap shoot as to who will work out and everyone has that "hope springs eternal" attitude reading bios and watching tape. Nonetheless, I would like to hear people's general thoughts about strength of your incoming 2019 class and any specifically that you are excited about:

For my ISUr ....

Generally, our roster has gone big lately, very big. But I think Spack must have realized he may have overshot his mark a bit. So this class was smallish and much more athletic by comparison to our current roster. Also went after skill players much more so than interior players. Spack tends to recruit with certain position groups emphasis each year ... this years class has lot of RBs, LBs, Athletes. I assume he is trying to create healthy balance of cohesion and competition within each position group, as well as improve team with players who can play in space. In any case, I like our size, but you always needs guys who can play in space these days.

Specifically, what were most excited about is the RB group he brought in this year ... IMO, by far his best HS prospective RB group. Note, Coprich had no stars coming out of HS. Robinson had just 2 stars. Here's what we got this year ... and all had FBS offers or strong interest:

- Cole Mueller | RB | 6-0 | 190 | Wentzville, Missouri (Holt HS) ... 3 stars, FBS recruit

- Pha'leak Brown | RB | 5-10 | 200 | Chester, South Carolina (Chester HS) ... 2 stars, FBS recruit

- Nigel White | RB | 5-9 | 165 | Lauderhill, Florida (St. Thomas Aquinas HS) ... 3 stars, FBS recruit

Spack was asked and commented at press conference, he is having easier time convincing quality RBs to come to ISU. Obviously, it started with Coprich and now Robinson, but we've had several good ones in between those 2. Many of which eventually left for lack of time .. we lost 4 or 5 good RBs the last 3 years as a result. Mainly because Robinson quickly rose to top after his true FR year. Note, we just lost backup RB Markel Smith (announced he is grad transferring after spring).

But the 3 above look like they all have strong potential to emerge .. guessing at least 1 will play next fall. Mueller runs a true sub 4.5 and is very agile. Brown is not as fast, but very good field vision and agility. White has amazing quicks, just undersized or he would have gone FBS .. his HS is perennial top 25 in country. We'll see if they pan out.

St. Thomas Aquinas is a bigtime HS program, isn't it? I know i've heard that name before.

Yes, last year MaxPreps had them #23 in country and 3rd in FL. I didn't look at how they did in playoffs. This kid is 3 star, but obviously under-sized. If you watch his tape, you'll probably notice his quicks (and against top tier HS talent) but he goes down pretty easy once you get an arm or body on him. I'm sure that scared the FBS programs away. ISUr will need to put some weight and muscle on him .. or he probably won't do much at RB. But they will put him in space for sure. If he plays as true FR, he will get a shot at PR and KR if his hands hold up at this level.

If I had to choose just one of these 3 to succeed early, it might be Mueller .. his tape, measurables, and combine #'s are all very good ... sub 4.5, 37" vertical, 120" broad jump ... tape shows he is slippery fast, great vision/reads and can change direction on a dime .. somebody taught this kid to run effortlessly.

But I really like all 3 .. will be stunned if one or more aren't studs within 2-3 years.

It's offseason, so hope springs eternal ......

I'm always very suspect of HS forty times ... SPARQ is usually as legit as they come, and legit 4.45s are very fast for HS and FCS level. You hear people and see sites that put garabage out there about kids running 4.4 or 4.5. But after a couple decades of paying close attention to this stuff, I have concluded you can add .10 to .20 to about 80/90% of the forty times that get reported on HS kids. But again, SPARQ takes this very seriously and doesn't usually allow BS times .. so I believe this one.

Colonial will be interesting to follow next season .. the depth is back, but the very top is still a question mark. I'm looking forward to keepratings site getting updated to see who's got what.

Thanks for posting, sorry for tangents ... but it's offseason.

Portland State went with speed at all positions. Barnum calls it "The Year of the Cheetah", as we tried to get more speed. A couple notables are Justus Legg, 6-4 240lb DE from Riverside HS in Auburn, WA, a 4-star recruit who had offers from most of the Pac-12 as well as looks from Michigan. A couple publications had him leaning towards Utah but he is coming to Portland State. Also Jalen Chatman, a former 3-star QB from Narbonne HS in Inglewood, CA who redshirted at Rutgers last year, is transferring to Portland State as well. Also of note is John Krahn, a 6-10, 420lb OL (those are the correct dimensions) transfer from Riverside JC in California.

My Mocs ended up signing 18 between the two periods. We got a 3 star QB, a 6’4” DB, some solid OLs....,but I think the two that I’m most excited to see are very “under the radar” guys. I keep thinking that we have 3 alumni in the NFL and they didn’t have any stars, and two of them only had us as their lone FCS offer....so.... I like juco transfer WR Kanore McKinnon out of Georgia Military College. The guy is a gamer. His juco coach (In the Juco HOF and a national championship HC) said he will probably be the best WR in the entire state of TN, FCs and FBS. The guy knows how to catch a ball that comes anywhere near him. My second sleeper is RB Brandon Greggory out of Venice FL, he missed his junior season with a hand injury that requires surgery, so many big schools passed on him, but in 14 games (most of which he didn’t play the second half) he had 1500 yards and 35 TD. That was in FL 7A, TeAms like St Thomas Aquinas. The kid can be the next Danny Craine. I hope.

After Coach Byrd and the entire coaching staff was replaced there was a mass Exodus, which included the entire starting OL and many others, not to mention 15 seniors who graduated.

The team is pretty much almost a total overhaul.

When Coach Carthel came in he inherited a depleted roster and he made sure to sign at least one or two quality players for each position.

It will be interesting to see how it comes together.

3 stars are impressive gets for FCS, how do you figure you landed the 4 star ??

Pretty simple how it happens.

Kid plays in Texas, Florida, California, Alabama, Louisiana, and a few others he is automatically a 2 star no matter how good or bad he is.

There are a hundred D1 programs in those states. Kid gets an FBS offer - doesn't matter level of FBS offer and he gets at least a half star bump. Get a couple offers and "interest" from a P5 you get another half star.

It's a system that creates a cylce of every kid in that area ending up with a handful of G5 offers and P5 "Hey, how do you feel about maybe walking on" interests boosting a kids star ranking.

I take a kids "other offers" with a massive grain of salt. Almost none of them are committable. I genuinely mean almost none of them. These FBS programs are throwing out literally hundreds of offers per year.

Read this article. It's long...but it is MUST read to show the slimey underside of recruiting - especially of rthose that are super caught up in what other "offers" a kid had, which is a direct impact on their star ranking. I'll post parts of it

https://amp.si.com/college-football/2019/02/05/uncommittable-offers-recruiting-national-signing-day?__twitter_impression=true

Foster Moreau considered it “tacky” to commit immediately despite the circumstances: His dream college in his home state had just offered him a scholarship to play football. So he waited a week, then called LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to accept the offer and announced it publicly, taking to Twitter with as much excitement as ever.
This was the only major college offer that had been extended to Moreau, a three-star tight end out of a New Orleans private school, and the fact that his commitment came on Christmas Eve was part of the celebration. “It was awesome,” Moreau recalls. “I was like, ‘Let’s tweet this! It’s going to be a great tweet!’”
While Moreau’s family celebrated his all-expenses-paid future in purple-and-gold, back in Baton Rouge his name was absent from the list of 2015 commitments scribbled on a whiteboard in LSU’s recruiting war room. Only weeks later did Moreau’s high school coach relay a message from the LSU staff: He was not guaranteed a spot after all. His heart sank.

....

On Wednesday, hundreds of high school prospects will be left holding dozens of meaningless scholarship offers, signing with a school only after other programs, despite offering them a scholarship, never accepted their commitment. Maybe those schools found a better player at that position, or maybe the spots in the class filled up. Some scholarship offers aren’t ever committable, just fancy invitations to a school’s summer camp, while others are only committable for a certain amount of time. In the most egregious cases, coaches rescind offers out to committed prospects, and in other instances, schools strongly suggest that certain commits seek other options. “The coaches mother---- the kids,” says one major college assistant coach who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s the biggest problem in our game right now. It’s bull----.”

....

Using the 247Sports recruiting database, Sports Illustrated research shows an accelerating trend at the major college level that hit new, disturbing benchmarks this year. The study, covering the last eight recruiting cycles, produced galling figures within college football’s major conferences: more than 101,000 scholarship offers issued in order to fill about 12,000 available scholarships. For the 2019 cycle alone, the 65 programs in Power 5 conferences made more than 15,000 scholarship offers in order to secure what is expected be about 1,600 signees. That’s an average of about 237 offers per school per year, a 100-offer increase from the average in 2012.
...

There’s a reason the sport’s bluebloods are missing from the top 10. The schools passing out the most and earliest offers are typically secondary programs in competitive conferences. “They’ve got to get in early to beat the big dogs,” Simmons says. “Others try to create the narrative, ‘We don’t offer as many kids, so ours mean more!’ But that’s really hard to do.”

...

Some schools use offers as marketing ploys, offering players they have no chance to land or aren’t serious about just so their school is linked to the player on internet searches, recruiting web pages and social media. “It’s a huge issue, and it continues to snowball,” Wright says. “People are throwing out hundreds of offers out there, because why not? You’re getting publicity.”

...

The media is to blame, too, with its incessant coverage of teenagers’ potential college destinations. “The kids who now get all the attention are the ones who commit and decommit six times,” Johnson says. “The kids who commit and don’t change, they get one minute of fame and that’s it.” Recruiting reporters must wade through this mess, hanging their reputations on the comments of 16- and 17-year-olds while checking facts with college staff members. Prospects sometimes mistake flattery from a coach for an offer in a “miscommunication,” as Simmons says. Other players knowingly lie about an offer. They announce it publicly, often times on social media, only to have a recruiting reporter discover the truth from staff members. “I’ve had young people say that I’d offered them and I’d never had one conversation with them,” says Berry, who coached for 33 years before joining the AFCA in 2016. “Social media has created some challenges.”

...

SO SO SO SO SO MUCH MORE in the link

That applies to CUSA, SBC, MAC, etc. schools as well. These schools throw out offers - which inflates a kids star ratings - like beads at a Mardi Gras parade and about 80% of the time they aren't even real offers.

very helpful, thanks ... this blurb said all I need to hear, assuming it is reasonably factual .. this must be reined in immediately. Just flat out cruel to these kids and their families. I get the schools must recruit and offer more schollies than they have, because kids have options at that point ... but the increase in the ratio of offers to spots is very alarming. You just don't see this much of an issue in midwest or IL .. for reasons you inferred with the southern states.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE LUMBERJACK 2019 CLASS

SFA is starting a new era with the hiring of Head Coach Colby Carthel the program’s 4th head coach in the last 7 seasons. The Lumberjacks look to rebuild a struggling program that has seen only one winning season in that span.

With the departure of Coach Jeff Byrd, many players, mostly offensive linemen have elected to transfer out of the Pineywoods leaving behind for the new young coaching staff a roster with many holes to fill.

With a very late start (only signed 3 during the early signing period) Coach Carthel and company elected to sign at least one quality player for each position instead of trying to shore up just one or two areas.

A truly amazing job on what Coach Carthel calls “selling and believing in the vision”

By position (There will ultimately be position changes at QB)

Some of these are PWO and transfers.

Here's A&T's class: http://www.ncataggies.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=593291&SPID=74503&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=211789575&DB_OEM_ID=24500

Arguably the most decorated class A&T ever signed.

Here's us: https://goleathernecks.com/roster.aspx?roster=1585&path=football
18 guys, 2 are FBS transfers, 4 are JUCO guys, the rest are true freshmen.

A couple of interesting things:
Blake Muntz, a 6'6" TE from Richmond, KY with offers from a few MAC schools
Twin brothers Cameron and Khalil Overton, 6'3" and 6'4" WRs (respectively) from Dallas

The thing with Western is, we're almost never going to win a recruiting battle with lower-level FBS teams (like NDSU does regularly), so it's rare that we get any guys with "stars", and the ones that do often seem to be "busts". It's the guys who come in with only WIU as a DI offer and put in the work and effort to get better that are successful. Both Khalen Saunders and QB Sean McGuire only had offers from WIU (at the DI level), for example.

I'm a little concerned about the QB position down the road. We have a kid who I think will do well for the next two years, but after that, I'm not sure we have anyone at this point.

Is there a national ranking for recruiting for FCS schools? I know stars are cool to look at for fans but will they produce on the field may be another story.

Hero sports has done a pretty good job.

They are supposed to be releasing a full updated after everyone has signed ranking tomorrow.

A 4 Star recruit with offers from all the PAC12, and he chooses Portland State?

This kid definitely falls into the article I posted.

I can't find him as a 4* anywhere.

Rivals has him a 2* (https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2019/justus-legg-204470).
247 has him at a 3* on their site and composite. Also outside of the top 800 in the country - far from a 4* (https://247sports.com/Player/Justus-Legg-46042611/)
Scout has him at a 3* (http://www.espn.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/230535/justus-legg) and outside of the top 100 at the WDE position in the 2019 class.

Anything that does link him as a 4* is from 2016 or 2017 - his sophomore and junior seasons. All of those major offers came before his junior year of high school - 2017. For real - this article is from June 2017 when Michigan "offered" him. (https://247sports.com/college/football/recruiting/Article/2019-DE-Justus-Legg-Emerging-As-National-Prospect-74902564/)

These "offers" after his sophomore year a hell of a lot more like camp invite offers that were never committable than anything else. Hell, they were 2 years ago at this point.

I would put a hell of a lot of money I don't have on this kid keeping his 3* status simply because of those "offers" 2 years ago, rather than actually being a full 3 or 4 star kid.

The funny thing is, I can't find a single other D1 offer for him outside of Portland State I would consider real. If I were him I would keep the 4* thing on his Twitter bio too - but he had only D2 offers as of December.

December 21st, 2018 - D2 Central Washington
April 3, 2018 - Utah State - which was 100% uncomittable even in December from what I can find.

That's the entirety of his recruiting in 2018 that he made public. Before that you have to go all the way back to when that article I posted was written - even on his social media - which is June 2017

I'm also a Michigan fan, and I'm calling his Michigan offer bull****. It was 1000% one of those bull**** offers Sports Illustrated highlighted. Why do I know this? Kids who get "real" Michigan offers have official Michigan branded graphic offer letters to post on social media. He has a generic homemade 3 picture graphic he made on PicCollage using a logo Michigan doesn't use, an old ass photo of the Big House and a generic Jim Harbaugh photo. That isn't how Michigan actually offers kids. I also ran a search through the most connected Michigan recruiting blogs. His name never once appeared.

Again - this kid seems like the epitome of that SI article.

IF he truly was a 4* kid he wouldn't be signing with Portland State with the only other active offer a regional D2. I'm sorry, he wouldn't. He could be a baller. He could be an All American at Portland State. Maybe he goes on to get drafted and become the next FCS name player in the NFL.

I just...I mean....just no.

We'll see what happens. Myself, I don't put a lot of stock in these "stars". Once they get on campus, it usually is evident right away if they can play or not. Every time I watch the Blazers play, I have to remind myself that Lillard was a 2-star recruit coming to Weber. It does seem that Portland State gets the talent. The problem has always been to get the talent to mesh together on the field.

This is FUBeAR's 'write-up' of Mercer's signing class. Same Players as in Mercer's Official Release, but different info...just felt like it....Grouped 'em by position...I think the Bears did well this year. 247 Sports, Hero Sports, and Southern Pigskin all have Mercer's class as #1 in the SoCon.

* Dylan Fromm (yes - he's the younger brother of UGa's Jake Fromm) - QB, 6-0/204, Warner Robins HS, Warner Robins, GA - 3 Star; offers from UTC, Penn, South Alabama, SEMO

* Brandon Marshall - RB, 5-9/184, Raines HS, Jacksonville, FL - 3 Star; offers from NDSU, Charlotte, NC A&T, Charleston Southern
* Fredrick Davis - RB, 5-10/196, Northside HS, Columbus, GA - offers from Army, Navy, Columbia, Dartmouth, Davidson, Jacksonville

* Yahsyn McKee - WR, 5-10/172, Stockbridge HS, Stockbridge, Ga. - Offers from Hawaii (yes, that Hawaii), ETSU, and Charleston Southern. Though not 'reported,' non-Mercer 'inside sources' tell me he was also offered and highly coveted by at least one Sun Belt Team (FBS G5), which shall remain nameless
* Richie Coffey - WR, 5-10/170, Baldwin HS, Jacksonville, FL - offers from UMass, Alcorn St., Charleston Southern, FAMU, Idaho, New Hampshire, The Citadel

* Justin Bray - TE, 6-4/210, St. George’s Independent School, Collierville, TN - 2 Star; offers from GaSou, GaSt, Princeton, UTM
* Pedro Rodriguez - TE, 6-2/225, Lake Mary HS, Lake Mary, FL - offers from FAMU, UTM

* John Thomas - OL, 6-3/300, Hillgrove HS, Marietta, GA - 3 Star; offers from AF, APSU, Colorado St., ECU, EKU, Elon, Illinois St., SEMO, SIU
* Aidan Higgins - OL, 6-1/285, Mountain View HS, Lawrenceville, GA - numerous D2/NAIA offers; older brother was 4-year Starter at Center for Elon (2015-2018); oldest brother played OL at Tulane & TTU
* Colton Dingmore - OL, 6-4/255, Mary Persons HS, Forsyth, GA - offer from TTU

* Richard Benton Jr. - DL, 6-2/243, B.E.S.T Academy, Atlanta, Ga. - 3 Star; over 30 offers; 17 FBS, including 1 P5/ACC offer; rated as #1 SoCon Recruit by HeroSports
* Pat Rogers - DL, 6-2/290, Wayne County HS, Jesup, GA - Former Commit to The Citadel
* Chris Hill - DL, 6-2/260, Statesboro HS, Statesboro, Ga. - Offers from The Citadel, Savannah State, & Stetson
* Solomon Zubairu - DL, 6-1/240, Archer HS, Lawrenceville, Ga. - Offer from Stetson

* Luke Szabados - LB, 6-2/230, Moeller HS, Cincinnati, OH - offers from JMU, Eastern Mich., Duquesne, Holy Cross
* Zach Hopkins - LB, 6-1/215, James Clemens HS, Madison, AL - offers from Jacksonville St., Alabama St., GaSt, EKU, Furman
* Gavin Hughes - LB, 6-3/210, Coosa HS, Rome, GA - Very early Commit; offer from Liberty

* Joel Girtman - DB, 5-11/191, Westlake HS, College Park, GA - 2 Star; offers from Wofford (decommit from Wofford, actually), APSU, ETSU, FAU, Morgan St., Tennessee St.
* Lance Wise - DB, 5-8/183, Hillgrove HS, Marietta, GA - offers from AF, Army, Columbia, Kent St.
* Kendall Bohler - DB, 5-11/170, Ocoee HS, Ocoee, FL - offers from FAMU, Jacksonville, Stetson (older brother started @ CB for Mercer in 2018)

* Devin Folser - K, 6-2/170, Ola HS, McDonough, Ga. - Offers from Kennesaw & JaxSt; Kohl's Kicking ranks him 4.5 Stars & #52 in US. 12 Kickers that were ranked below him by Kohl's signed with FBS Teams (signed...NOT walk-ons or PWO's, signed). His school-record 51 yard FG in 2018 appears as if it would have been good from 70+ yards. It's still OVER the top of the uprights when it crosses past the crossbar!! BIG LEG
* Zach Lassiter - LS, 6-1/193, Bleckley County HS, Cochran, GA - Very early Commit as a Long Snapper; offer from GaSou

FUBeAR, typically, is highly skeptical of any OLmen over 6’4” with no FBS offers, but I see a young man that likes to finish blocks, likes to run, and enjoys the game of Football on this video. Lists himself at 6-8 though. I found other info saying he is 7’....6’8” looks more accurate. He’s all right though...from what I see here. I’d sure as heck take a chance on him. He’s as good or better than a lot 6-5 guys I see signing. If you’re going to sign a big galoot to play on your OL, why not sign the biggest galoot...and one that really looks like he wants to be a Player. Still probably can get speed rushed by...but the way he looks pulling, in some O’s, he would be a nice OG.

He...mostly can't. D1 speed ends will have little issue with him. Even if he catches that first burst one move and his direction change isn't going to be great.

Overload his side of the line. He won't be able to help on blitzes. He will only ever be able to handle his one assignment. He isn't going to help his guard. He isn't pulling. He isn't getting out front on screens.

It’s looks like he is a better Guard than Tackle, despite not seeing much Pass Blocking from the big man.

Did you watch the vid? He looked as good (or better) pulling as a lot of the other ones I’m seeing these days.

He is going to set the pancake block record xlolx. Gonna be a load for someone on the D.

My thoughts exactly. Have him run block til the cows come home.
Washington State had a 6'9" guy just recently that made 2nd team All America at guard...he also had one of the all time nicknames "The Continent"

ISUr has JR LT at 6'10" 315 lbs Drew Himmelman ... made Hero all american as SO (done by class) and MVFC all conference (2nd team).

Side note ... Himmelman played basketball and football in HS .. he was pretty good bball player, but was listed at 6'8" 225 lbs as HS SR (presumably fall 2015) ...he's put on 2 inches and 90 lbs in just over 3 years. He'll be a RS JR this fall ... NFL is watching his development - 2 year starter, and still got 2 years left ... very good footwork, long arms, and just a great frame for putting weight on.

Washington State's O'Connell was 70 to 80 pounds smaller than this PSU kid. The ISUr kid is a century mark smaller than him. There's a lot of flexibility and movement that come with that difference in weight. Think of the agility difference between a player at 320 and then 250.

Maybe he's a mold breaker - figuratively and literally.

UNI signed a kid that was 6'7 350 or so 2 years ago. Kid didn't last a season because D1 ball (at least at UNI) doesn't let kids off the hook if they can't finish drills due to conditioning and shape issues

just a great frame for putting weight on.
You're part of frame is a big part of it.

Look at the kid from Washington State

I posted a video of our signing class on the Offseason SLC thread. We have a mixture of incoming freshmen and transfers; mainly JUCO and a couple of FBS. Some will be ready to contribute quickly, others not...

We had a lot to fill on our lines, but we were deeper to start the Spring than last year and the ones we brought in should be able to pick up from there. We filled other spots in our defensive secondary and then running backs/receivers. We were already set at QB and special teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of recruits moved to different positions as the Spring moves forward. Our biggest thing right now is not knowing who the new DC will be yet......

I keep hearing a rumor it may be Clint Brown, the current DC from South Dakota State.

Trim him down to 360 somehow and I'll buy it.
tracked the WSU "kid" O'Connell ... as FR, he was listed at 6'8" 346 lbs; as SR he was 6'9" 368 lbs and 2 time all american. Himmelman was 6' 8" 285 lbs as HS SR (basketball roster #s). As ISUr FR he was listed at 6'10" and 305 ... and now at 335. He could easily support another 15 or 20 lbs. But from what I've heard, he struggles to put on weight and has very little body fat. O'Connell was also a freak, but had some body fat. We'll see where Himmelman is at come next fall. Our strength guy (and HC) are both a little too old school for my liking .. they are both the type that believe "more is more" .. when sometimes "more" is not healthy (benefits of allowing recovery stage) or optimizing performance. BUt Himmelman is a freak body/athlete and pretty smart, but won't likely ever add any body fat ... I'm guessing he likes being a little on lean side and might be able to gain 5 lbs per year at most.

Just gonna drop this as evidence that FBS offers mean nothing most of the time

This is only B10 offers as of today

yeesh ... so let's assume average of 20 schollies are available each year for FBS level ... I'm adjusting mentally for normal attrition (increases schollies available) and redshirt-ting (decreases schollies available since many players use 5 years of scholly money).

So I'm curious how much this has increased over the last 2 or 3 decades (going to guess internet has made this worse) ? And what is an optimal ratio of offers to schollies available ? 4 to 1 .. that is, assume you recruit in a way that requires you to hit on 25% of your offers.

Can't ignore kids are getting less patient about sitting on 2 and 3 deeps while waiting their turn to play ... plus the internet makes it so much easier to market yourself. So colleges presumably had to up the ratio to deal with these realities.

I can't wait to see the new 2019 roster. See who was added along with who may have left the program for whatever reason.

A bit more proof that recruiting sites and stars are dumb and meaningless

And with schools handing out 100, 200, 300, 400 plus offers a year - who knows how many times this **** happens.

Who knows who actually has an offer from anyone.

Hell, a real kid with real film can just start tweeting out he's received an offer from a handful of P5 schools and ****ing no one is going to know he's full of ****.

Rivals should be very ashamed and immediately re-evaluate how any kid gets their first valuation ... love that they got exposed for shoddy investigative handling.

I have basic idea how Rivals works, only because I had a son who played football in the Chicago Metro area. One of the Rivals analysts is a HS sportsbeat writer, blogger, scout who takes his job very seriously. His name is Tim McIntyre and goes by EdgyTim. He stakes his reputation on how he doles out stars and would never give anyone stars unless he saw them in person or on tape, and then was able to verify the kid for himself. He also knows and considers combine results ... he knows the ones that allow BS times in 40's and verticals. Some you take with grain of salt, some you believe.

Yes, it is easy to get a BS vertical if they let you shrug your shoulders and chin down when they measure your arm reach standing .. you can add 4 to 6 inches to your vertical if they let you shrug enough and then slightly dip your knees with baggy sweats on. And hand timed fortys are very easy to fudge by 0.2 seconds .. difference between 4.7 and 4.5 is nothing to a hand held time, but everything to a kid trying to get interest. Kids see this and want to go to that combine so they can fluff up their numbers. Want to know if a particular combine is BS ... compare their verticals with another combine ... if you see a bunch of kids jumping upper 30's and lower 40's ... your BS meter should be spiking.

Anyway, in the case of EdgyTim and the work he does for Rivals in Chicago area, the integrity behind his stars and scouting reports is way up there. He is NOT doing it for the clicks and popularity aspect. He lets those chips fall where they may .. and he's been doing it for a long time.

So not all of Rivals is out of control, but apparently it is deteriorating badly.

I worked for rivals in Iowa. The guy that runs the Iowa site does a great job. But the national **** is real bad.

I second this. EdgyTim is a very solid source in our region.

The Aggies got a couple of linebackers, and focused on upgrading talent in the defensive backfield.

They also stacked RBs, TEs and WR. Completely reloaded with youth at the skill positions on offense. Note that Davis started 4 freshmen on their OL last year.

Notable Signees:
QB Trent Tompkins, Central HS (Fresno, CA) (https://ucdavisaggies.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6263)
TE Blake Thorpe, Las Lomas HS (Walnut Creek, CA) (https://ucdavisaggies.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6264)
