All you had to do was win, or lose by less than 3 to the eventual champs, who weren't in your side of the bracket.

D2 West Chester for PA is worthy based on their undefeated regular season. D3 Muhlenburg and D2 Slippery Rock, both of whom made it to the quarterfinals of the playoffs make a case. FBS wise, Penn State was pretty underwhelming for most of the year given preseason expectations. Temple was respectable but had a couple ugly losses.

Duquesne was the best FCS team in the Keystone State. I think that sums up the current state of FCS football in PA. Penn has been decent. Villanova, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell and Robert Morris have all been varying degrees of mediocre to horrific recently.

I take offense to A&T being considered the best in NC. We (Elon) are definitely better than A&T. That said, the award should undoubtedly go to NC State.

Enjoy it while it lasts Darmouth(Newman)...Seriously though, great for them for turning them around, and glad we have another series vs them. UNH should play them or another IVY every single year no question.

It's an interesting chart, but I doubt Valdosta State hangs with UGA. And Vanderbilt being team of the year in Tennessee says a lot about Tennessee football.

100% agreed

Couple other observations ...

Illinois ... considering Chicago Metro population, might as well call this the "tallest midget" award. But my ISUr already knocked of a very solid 2016 Northwestern team, and we will get a shot next year against the 2019 NIU team they rank #1.

Texas ... for the life of me, who else (not from Texas) knew Baylor was UMHB, much less that it stood for University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Sounds like one of those obscure middle of nowhere Missouri NAIA schools.

Vermont ... D-III Middlebury (5-4 record) ... wow.

so now that I know who UMHB is .. in D-III quarters, they beat top MN team St Johns by 3, in semi's they beat perennial top 2 WI Whitewater by 17, in Natty, they beat the other perennial top 2 Mt Union by 8.

But just read the fine print on this award .. it is not meant to be best team, but rather best "season". So I withdraw my official complaint ... does make for more interesting read knowing this.

"College football doesn’t have state championships, exactly. But we can still pick the best season in every state."

But Vermont Middlebury at 5-4 still rates "wow" reaction.

As far as Vermont- not much competition for Middlebury. No D1 or D2- only 3 D3 schools- Castleton was 2-8, Norwich 3-7.

Minnesota State was 13-1. St John's was 12-1. The writer can't do math.

Nope, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is a DIII in Belton, TX.
Baylor University is DI FBS in Waco, TX

UMHB was originally the "female department/college" of Baylor University, but has since split off to become it's own University.

It's also not named after someone named "Mary Hardin-Baylor".

Baylor University was named after a minister and politician named Robert Emmett Bledsoe Baylor who helped found the university by asking the (then) Republic of Texas to found the university.

John and Mary Hardin owned land (farmer) that oil was discovered on and they became very wealthy philanthropists supporting private higher-ed in the region. This included large funds for schools such as the Baylor College for Women, which was renamed the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in their honor. Also, Simmons University in Abilene did something similar, becoming Hardin-Simmons University.

I only know this because I have a sister-in-law living in Killeen, TX that we're going to visit over spring break this year and while researching the area, realized that UMHB was in Belton. Otherwise I'd probably have no idea.

Interesting history Lawson. I sorta knew there was some connections, but not the details.

The chart is interesting and fun for sure just because it brings up a lot for discussion. I don't mind charts that include programs where they are at without having to pair them against bigger schools/programs. They allow the smaller programs to be included for what they have accomplished. The chart doesn't diminish the bigger and more powerful programs.

Yeah, it's really more a chart of "most successful program at their respective level of football", because despite how good Mary Hardin-Baylor was this year (and has been for a while), any of the P5 teams in the state would likely crush them.

Anybody who thinks Virginia is the best team in Virginia just doesn't pay attention. They were better this year, but they couldn't be more irrelevant on a national level. They won't play JMU ('85 was the last matchup), instead playing W&M and Richmond repeatedly.

They are only considering this past season. UNH is 18-1-1 vs Dartmouth since 1978; however I can't argue that Dartmouth was better on paper in 2018.

I'm sure she will. She loves medicine (ER stuff mostly), can be really determined when she wants something, and a large part of my wife's family is military (we're actually going to their uncle (https://www.nationalguard.mil/portals/31/Features/ngbgomo/bio/1/1842.html)'s military retirement reception this weekend), so it's kinda "in her blood".
I'll be sure to pass along your thanks next time I talk to her.

Both of those lists include D3 schools outside of Vermont. My guess is Vermont doesn't have much to choose from, and from what they offer, a 5-4 Middlebury was the best they could come up with? I have zero clue about teams up in the Northeast to be honest.

Reread my post #15. In it I stated that there were only three D3 teams in Vermont- Casleton, Middlebury and Norwich, and no D1 or D2 (or NAIA either) teams. I thought that since you had quoted my post that you had read it and was asking about Minnesota.

Oops, my bad. No, was wondering about the Middlebury comment. I thought you were comparing the MN and VT teams. Between MN St and St. Johns, which program has been more successful over the last several years?

***Ok, went back the last 4 years between SJU and MSU and MSU definitely has the better record: SJU = 12-1, 9-2, 10-2 & 10-2. MSU = 13-1, 13-1, 8-3 & 10-2.***

They do put temporary bleachers beyond the north end zone where the field house/gym are. They have added a lot of bleachers since the first time I was there over 20 years ago. I sat up on the hillside in the southeast corner watching the leaves fall. That crowd was for the St. Thomas game when Gags broke the record for wins. They actually have you park way north of the stadium and haul fans in on busses.

Johnnie-Tommie games are nuts. I saw one Tommie wearing a t-shirt that said, "Tommies suck- but Johnnies swallow."

Would like to see WCU play Muhlenberg. I think it would be a pretty good game. Yes, FCS football in the Keystone State was pretty mediocre this year.

Not sure. I was there for a playoff game a few years ago when MSU didn't make the playoffs. Big snowstorm so that was all covered. I stood on the north end line with a bunch of SJU students. They went for it as time ran out on 4th down- official stood there, waited for several seconds, and finally raised his hands. Suddenly I almost got picked up by the happy students. They agreed- it that game was on the road, it wouldn't have been a touchdown.

LOL......

I'm happy for the Maroon Chiefs- ah hem- I mean Mustangs- for finally getting the national title in football. They sure had a tough time in the old days.

I take offense to A&T being considered the best in NC. We (Elon) are definitely better than A&T. That said, the award should undoubtedly go to NC State.

I think the award is subjectively about the team who had the best season......not the best team. Elon definitely better than A&T? Now that's offensive!
