View Full Version : MONMOUTH NOW A STRONG BUBBLE- THOUGHTS?

I am not a total homer- have been intimate with FCS football for a long time and I understand that the 4th or 5th best team in the CAA or MVFC may be better than the 2nd best team in the Big South most years, but after Bethune Cookman winning and therefore eliminating NC A&T and really really looking at the resumes, I think it is entirely possible for Monmouth to get in now. They will essentially be the only bubble team with 8 wins. They played ALL D-1 games, one of them being an FBS game. Although they got smoked, their only losses are to a decent bowl bound FBS, the # 2 team in nation and a top 10 team. And although this does not matter, we played Kennesaw even for a half. I absolutely understand the SOS and win quality was poor but 8 D-1 wins and no bad losses with an offense that is capable may seriously put them in this thing.

It is pretty hard to sit here and say teams like Lamar or Furman or Idaho St and Incarnate are clearly above Monmouth. Elon when they were at Full strength beat Charleston Southern 31-22, we beat them 37-3. Stuff happens on any given Saturday. Is Elon a better team than MU? Probably, but seeing as we will be the only bubble team with 8 wins and no bad losses and seeing a couple teams sort of falter down the stretch I really think we have a 60/40 type shot at getting in now. This especially holds true if North Dakota loses (down 7 now) and Idaho St loses (which they are and will) -- Again, I am not saying MU should make it over Delaware or Towson, but if it comes down to Incarnate, Furman, Elon, Lamar for a couple spots I am not so sure that we do not deserve it.. And right now it looks that way...

here are my at large teams as of right now that i think are definite (in no order)

1. UC Davis
2. Weber St
3. Montana St.
4. Towson.
5. Stony Brook (just lost to a bad team)
6. Delaware
7. James Madison
8. SD state
9. Indiana St
10. Wofford
11. SE Missouri St

Lets hear how out of my mind everyone thinks I am but that leaves 3 more teams from the likes of Elon, Furman, Mcneese/Lamar winner, Idaho state, Northern Iowa, Incarmate word, Samford and Monmouth. Even if you give it to Furman and Elon MU is still right there with a shot.. If and this is IF Furman and.or Elon gets left out, I am not sure how Monmouth does not get in..

Sorry, I like MU and the Hawks program. But the showing last season at UNI is still fresh in the committee’s mind.

Any of the teams listed, minus Samford, get in over the Hawks IMHO.

The problem with Monmouth is they have ZERO good wins and the good teams they played they got beat like a government mule.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the committee let them in. It IMHO the shouldn't be in.

I think you are probably right to be honest- I just do not think it is out of the realm of possibility. Last years showing if it matters, will doom our chances, especially since a 6-5 N Iowa team would need to be left out over us- I think N Iowa is in (they are winning in blowout fashion) ---

The inability to be competitive with the 3 best teams on your schedule is not reflective of a playoff team. When determining the last few at larges it's important to select teams that have proven that if given a chance they'll at least give it hell against Top 25 level competition. Monmouth has failed to show that....

I can agree with you there. Not out of The realm of possibility. Just doesn’t look great.

But the committee never ceases to amaze.

Nope. Lafayette had them beat but we are a disgrace and blew it.

If Northern Iowa gets snubbed in place of a weak Monmouth team they boatraced just a year ago, the whole committee should be impeached. JMHO.

I'd put Furman and Northern Iowa in for sure. I'm thinking Elon as the final spot, but I reserve my right to change that opinion.

A) Monmouth doesn't have any wins against the projected playoff field.

2) Giving up 51 points in 3 losses, doesn' t help (51-17 at EMU, 51-9 at Princeton, 51-14 vs. KSU)

C) Best Win - Charleston Southern, Campbell, Wagner?

4) 2017 At-large loss (46-7 loss at Northern Iowa)

----

Elon has wins vs JMU, URI, and Furman - all better wins than everything Monmouth has.

#13 Lehigh was left out of the playoff in 2012 with a 10-1 record - I don't think unranked Monmouth at 8-3 has a chance.

---

That being said, I didn't think MU deserved an at-large bid last season at 9-2, but it was a weak bubble and you had a win vs. a playoff qualifier (Lehigh). Very possible that can happen again this year ... but a lot harder with just 8 wins

Samford has the unique distinction of not making the playoff field in spite of beating all three teams that tied for the SoCon title.

It is more than just no quality wins, they got stomped by every single quality team that they have played. Monmouth has no business being a playoff team, it is a pretty open and shut case.

Monmouth does not deserve a playoff bid.

Monmouth failed to CAPITALIZE on their opportunities. If they had, they'd be a LOCK for the bubble. It would really SHIFT the committee's view of their chances.

I could see Monmouth getting a bid if the committee really wanted another east coast team to send to either Delaware/Stony Brook/Towson in the first round. Outside of that, I don't think they deserve a bid on their resume alone.

Had they put up a fight against Kennesaw or Princeton they’d be a lock. But when you play trash teams all year and than get curb stomped by the good teams, it says a lot.

Three 6-win teams in over Monmouth is a huge joke. I could have maybe lived with passing on them if Incarnate Word and the 6th-placed CAA team didn't make it, but as the bracket stands... They were screwed. Three 6-win teams in and Monmouth out. A complete joke.
