I think ECU approached Houston last year. My money is on him going to Chapel Hill if Fedora gets the short haircut.

Could Klieman getting poached mark the end of the Bison's Reign of Terror? No.

Best option would be a P5 DC. He would likely take a few guys with him, but Entz would most likely be the next HC.

Should he get G5 HC most of the staff will go but keeping Entz and Kramer would be the key. I'd like for Messingham to stay (is that weird to say for a Bison fan that I want our OC to stay) but the Bison could not afford to lose Coach Kramer.

The Bison will be alright if the next guy sticks to the philosophies that have got us here. Honestly I'd look at Craig Bohl even though his Wyoming run has been mediocre over Klieman. I like Klieman as a person better but Bohl is a guy I think can take a program like KState with their resources and get them at least contending for the Big 12. '

For NDSU I think Matt Entz would be the front runner. Personally and most bison fans won't like this but I think Tim Polaskek our old OC would be the best choice.

I read an article regarding ECU's declining enrollment along with a growing disconnect between the administration and various departments including athletics. I'm pretty sure they're currently without a president. 5-10 years ago ECU would have been considered a pretty darn good gig. I don't see that being the case until some stability is shown. It easily could be worthy of moving onto once again. As it is, Houston can do far better.

It's true...someday the FBS will do a major restructure and they'll get their shot with some of the G5 schools and the top level of the FCS.
Either that or the heat-death of the universe.

There is a major renovation of South Bethlehem, PA going on right now. New office buildings, apartments, restaurants, dormatories setting the pace of "Urban" Renewal. Meyer to South Mountain so he can chill out and enjoy college football, again. Yeah, right.

How about Tressell?! He's clearly a bastion of academia given his current position, President of Youngstown State. Combine that with his ability to coach a little pigskin makes him the perfect candidate! Maybe he could get the players summer jobs at the Steel Mill....errr Casino?

NDSU will not be in the NC game every year but they will be a consistent playoff team every year IMO. Maybe a year out of the playoffs but nothing I see that makes me think this program will fall way off where they cannot even make the playoffs. The AD would be hunted down if he let the program fall off.

Even next year this team is going to be very good even with a RFR QB.

Bielema, a former K-State defensive coordinator, could be a fit here. North Dakota State’s Chris Klieman, who has three FCS national titles, has a strong connection to Wildcats athletics director Gene Taylor.*

The way that Bohl dealt with the move from NDSU to Wyoming would cost him any chance with Taylor. I think everyone knew that Bohl could be leaving, so that's not the problem. But how it went down when it comes to coaches and recruits will cost him even a look at the K-State job. If not for how Klieman kept the locker room together along with undeniably the most important senior class of this run, then who knows how the last 4 years go.

Seeing how they interacted with each other during that playoff game was eerie IMO. You could clearly tell they were at odds with each other even if they were not saying it out loud.

IMO the next time NDSU goes two years without a National title will be the first time they start thinking about FBS. That's basically what happened with App. The FCS is lucrative and beneficial until it isn't. Money and bowl games become more enticing when you go on a national title drought.

The minimum payout for some of these bowls is like half a million dollars. How much does NDSU make with a home game in Fargo/national title appearance?

I doubt that'll move the needle at all in terms of NDSU's FBS aspirations or lack thereof. The biggest hurdles of finding conference affiliation and raising the necessary $10-$20M extra per year for the athletic budget aren't going to be solved after they fail to win a national title in consecutive years.

It will be when the money stops flowing from FCS playoff games and FBS games (who refuse to schedule). It's a lot easier to pitch a capital fundraising campaign than you think. $20 million isn't that much. Wofford just fundraised over $260m privately and are aiming for another $20m publicly. We have less than 20k living alumni. The scale of potential revenue is so much greater at the FBS level, even if you factor in travel expenses. It'll happen, just watch.

I don't think they make much money on FCS playoff games (although I'm sure they do ok). They're currently in the process of securing around $40M for an indoor practice facility (primarily for football) so I'm sure the NDSU AD will have a really good idea how easy or difficult it'll be for additional fund raising after that.

I've said it many times before but I don't see NDSU moving up to the FBS without one or more regional partners... be it SDSU, UND, or someone else. The only nearby FBS leagues are the B1G and the Big 12 and neither of them are going to come knocking. NDSU would be on an island too far east for the MWC and too far west for the MAC. For football that would be bad enough but for all the other sports it would be a killer.

If a time comes when a Fargodome replacement becomes a reality I may be more on board with an FBS move due to the extra revenue it could generate but until then, or until there's more regional schools willing to make the same move in the current landscape, it's a really hard sell for me.

Seeing everyone want to pull NDSU down to their level instead of rising up to NDSU's level is disappointing.

Same thing happened back when we were in D2 and they lowered scholarship limits.

It would be cool if Montana/Montana State and some Dakota schools moved and formed their own conference (heck, that would actually be beneficial to Idaho as well). I think it would be immediately better than the Mountain West Conference, so much so you could probably see Wyoming and Boise State join. It won't happen because of NCAA rules not allowing it (I think), but my general point is that those northern states coming together make as much sense as any.

I'm not anti-NDSU as much as I am pro-novelty. There's no novelty in FCS anymore. I like my team, and I think we're good but I'm skeptical we'll ever win a national title nowadays. Even the FBS is a little bit easier to watch because at least Bama leaves room for doubt. Winning 5 of 9 leaves more suspense than 6 of 7. I generally root for dynasties because they're an accomplishment, but after a while it just gets boring.

I don't see NDSU going anywhere anytime soon. They're a geographic outlier for the Mountain West and the MAC would be a step down in competition. There's no TV market to make them attractive to any P5 conference*. The only realistic way they go FBS is for a new conference to form with select members of the Big Sky and MVFC which would require changes by the NCAA (or at least the threat of a lawsuit).

* I can imagine an opening in the B12 if all the decent teams in that conference are poached away by the SEC and PAC-12, but in this collapse scenario the B12 would cease to be P5.

On the other hand, there are suitable candidates to knock them off their perch. Could Kennesaw State be the next Georgia Southern? Will UNA become a national power. Will Montana rise from the ashes?
To me, the issue isn't that NDSU is dominating ... it's that many teams that have been real contenders in the past have underperformed the last few years (Montana, Delaware, and McNeese come to mind off the top of my head).
