Computer rankings can be very helpful and accurate but when there isn't sufficient overlap between conferences, it will be flawed.

Everyone from a power conference below them also has one loss. They have one of the best wins in the subdivision. MSU’s start raises ISUr’s SOS profile for now (IOW’s not a bad loss).

This is actually a good poll for Sagarin this early in the season.

Samford might be the 23rd most talented team in the country, but at 1-4 and their only win against a D2 team, I find it hard to believe they are ranked 23 in any poll.

I’d really like to understand this poll half of it usually makes sense but the other half has some real hard to understand ratings at least to me

To be technical, it isn't a "poll" but simply a computer rating (based possibly on a flawed algorithm) racked and stacked to make a ranking. Preseason bias is still present and in Samford's case that close loss to FSU weighs HEAVY in a good way for them (FSU is rated as a top 50 FBS computer rated team). Plus their other 3 Div I opponents were good teams (#46, 41, and 22 in FCS). Plus, and I have to say it one more time, SAGARIN does NOT compute into its rantings any lower division games, so it is not even taking Samford's D2 game into account. Otherwise they would be lower simply due to SOS.
