As I do every year I take a little time out of my schedule and try to put together top players to watch for each award. This has helped me determine players I need to scout for work and gives my friends here at AGS a chance to see how the awards may look.

Keep in mind that the official lists are done by Craig Haley at STATS but hopefully this shows names he could be considering and names that are popping up on the radar.

Love that Montana has two linebackers on the Buchanan list.

In your opinion, what's the chances Dalton Sneed is added to this list for Payton consideration?

Two LB from the same team in the top five? When's the last time that ever happened?

Also, yeah. Sneed. :p

Cox, the LB from NDSU, has returned both his INTs for TDs. Someone joked on Bisonville (or maybe it was here) that he currently leads the team in TD receptions (which is true).

He won't have the numbers to be a legit contender for the Buchanan but damn is he talented... and he's only a sophomore.

Might want to consider keeping an eye on McShane (the WR at UNI, not the RB at WIU) for the Rice Award. Still early, but he's leading the team in receiving yards and is crazy fast.

Oddly enough, nope...just a very fast pretzel.

ISUr JR RB James Robinson (5'10 220 lbs with break away speed and loves contact) must be added to list .. he only gets 15 carries per game because he shares backfield reps with Markel Smith and Jordan Birch. Here are stats .. getting 8.3 yards per carry this year after 3 games .. including identical 8.3 against CSU.

Year gp att gain loss net avg td lg avg/g
2017 11 165 997 64 933 5.7 12 87 84.8
2018 3 46 390 8 382 8.3 5 57 127.3

With new OC and shored up OL loaded with underclassmen, he is going to put up crazy yards per carry this and next year.

Someone you might want to add to your watch list is WR Josh Pearson. 362 yards, 5 TD, 120.7 YPG through 3 games. On pace for a monster season with Zerrick.

Looked like he was going to be the 'missing link' for Mercer this season, but he broke his collar bone in the last :22 of the game with The Citadel while driving the Bears down the field (had already covered 40 yards in 30 seconds/6 plays and was at the CIT 35 with 2nd & 10 and 1 timeout) for the potential game-winning or tying score. He had just taken them 75 yards in 7 plays/1:11 to tie the game in the previous series, but, alas, the Bears gave up a KOR TD forcing him to have to do it again...until the big, mean bellhop grabbed him and jumped on him (legally in the NCAA...but not in the NFL these days :-)) as he threw the ball away to avoid a 1st down sack.

Barring this injury, I really do think he would have been the Jerry Rice Award Winner. Very special Player!

Love that Montana has two linebackers on the Buchanan list.

In your opinion, what's the chances Dalton Sneed is added to this list for Payton consideration?

A couple more good games and he will. Buss and Olson deserve it. Both of them are next level guys who are dominating the Big Sky right now. I tried not to do so but every week they are putting up the type of numbers that a Buck Buchanan Award finalist should put up.

Someone you might want to add to your watch list is WR Josh Pearson. 362 yards, 5 TD, 120.7 YPG through 3 games. On pace for a monster season with Zerrick.

I thought about him. One more big game and I will. I saw him against NCAT and he is good.

Chason Virgil belongs on this list over some of the other QBs on it.

I saw him play and he looked okay against LSU but not great. I do think he has a shot. Just needs to limit those picks. For me to add a new player they need to have a small number of picks and a couple weeks without one or just one over the next 3 games or so with several TDs and he should be added.

Don't make statements like that unless you have seen everyone in FCS. Lovett is good for sure and a great athlete but don't think he is a top 10 or 20 player in FCS quite yet. He is probably the 2nd best player on the Princeton offense to be honest. I love Horsted. He can play.

Jimmy Moreland has a chance to win some votes this weekend playing against Richmond's athletic receiving corps. One of the guys had 12 for 180 last year (with Lauletta @ QB, mind you).

Has had a pick 6 in his last 2 games. Seems to be filling the void left when A/A CB Rashad Robinson went down for the year with a foot injury.

He'll need some big games against some better competition, but QB Tyrie Adams from WCU accounted for over 3000 yards last year and he is on pace to account for over 3300 and 33 TDs this season. Through 3 games:
Passing: 51-83 for 599 yards and 5 TDs with 2 INT; efficiency 137.13 and right at 200 yds per game / Rushing: 46 for 304 (6.6 YPC even with 3 sacks figured in) and 4 TDs; 101.3 per game
Total: 903 yards and 9 TDs (over 300 yards and 3 TDs per game)

And pretty much every team goes in to every game trying to key on and stop him. He might not stay on the list, but those are stats that should at least be out there for discussion.

If these Ivy leaguers would play the rest of the FCS and show us what they are made of, then we could finally settle this once and for all. Hell NCAT had the balls to come and play JSU at Montgomery, and then got beat by an awful Morgan St, so why can't Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, Columbia, Yale, etc... come and do a H-H with NDSU, SDSU, JMU, etc...?

Since my Tyrie Adams endorsement didn't get any good or bad response (or ANY response):

QB Chandler Burks, Kennesaw State, Sr.- 23-36, 390 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, 63.9%, 97.5ypg, 176.8 pass eff, 49 carries, 249 yards, 5.1ypc, 8 TD in 4 games - accounted for 639 total yards (159.75/game & 2.75 TD/game)
QB Tyrie Adams, Western Carolina, Jr.- 51-83, 599 yards, 5 TD, 2 INT, 61.4%, 199.7ypg, 137.17 pass eff, 46 carries, 304 yards, 6.6ypc, 4 TD in 3 games - accounted for 903 total yards (301/game & 3 TD/game)

More passing yards, more rushing yards, more YPC, and 2 less total TDs in 1 less game. Like I said, I know it has been against the weakest part of our schedule, but I actually expect the Catamounts to lean more on Adams going forward. Even if he is below his season average against Furman his stats after 4 games will look even that much better than Burks after his first 4 games. I also don't see a murderer's row that KSU has played to date, either. So it should either hurt Burks or not be as a big a factor against Adams - it shouldn't be overlooked for 1 and factor against the other.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but it's not my impression that we are turning down invitations from those schools. Have they, in fact, reached out to us?

Supposedly, Rutgers offered to play Princeton for the 150th Anniversary of College Football. At the time, Rutgers was reasonably good and Princeton sucked. Princeton turned them down. Since then, the programs have headed in opposite directions. Princeton supposedly asked if the offer was still good, but Rutgers declined.

Ignore him.... you want to see something funny check out the love affair this guy had a few years back for a guy named Collin Keoshian, an Illinois St RB who was a JUCO transfer from Cali in the winter of 2012/13: http://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?126201-Illinois-State-football-fans

From that thread (posted on 12/19/2012):

Great

Keoshian will be in the running for the Walter Payton award this coming Football season

Congratulations to Illinois State fans
Sound familiar?

Keoshian finished the 2013 season with 205 yards on 64 carries and 6 TDS (he did miss the last 4 games of the season so that's an average of about 30 yards per game). The next season he was sooooo good they moved him to DT. He did turn out to be a pretty decent DT on that 2014 national runner-up team though.

No, he just said it for shiggles.

Either way claiming a best player, especially this early in the season is stupid. It's why SCFBF makes a list.

That said, you can very easily tell who isn't in the running. Take the NFL for example: Is Aaron Rodgers or Aaron Donald the best player in the NFL? You could argue either but you'll be met with laughter if you tried to argue for Blake Bortles.

Somewhat. The other thing that hampers ndsu is that they won’t schedule a home and home unless their road game is in a 12 game season.

I'll bet you $100 for Gubrud if you bet me $10,000 for Lovett.

Huh?

what?

again, showing signs of a coward that isn't willing to do an even bet for the player he believes is the best FCS player...

so again

so are you willing to bet $100 that Gage Gubrud wins as the best player in the FCS?

Again, under this bet you would lose the bet if ANY OTHER PLAYER WINS THE AWARD.

Or are you a coward and not willing to put your money where you mouth is?

Dude, seriously...

He's not saying that Gubrud is the best player in the FCS. That's something that's impossible to know at this point. That's why your statement that your guy is the best player in the FCS makes so little sense. You might think that he's going to end up the best player...that's your opinion. Others are willing to put money down that your guy is not going to end up winning the Payton award, but nobody is going to put money down on who IS going to win the award...not at this point...it'd be stupid. People get hurt, crazy stuff happens, players just don't do as well as you think they will.
What he is saying is that he feels that the odds of Gubrud (or Christion) winning the Payton are much higher than Lovett winning it.

You want one name....THERE IS NO ONE NAME....that's why all reasonable people do a list at this point. Over the course of the season, people get added, people get dropped, the list gets more focused. When we get to the end, you can pretty much narrow it down to 2-3 usually. But it's all subjective anyway...the Payton Award is just one group of people's opinions.

Is Lovett good?....sure. Is he absolutely, without question, the best player in the FCS?...there's no way you can say that because there's no accurate way to measure that.
Do you think he's the best player in the FCS....yes.
Do I think he's the best player in the FCS...no....hell, I don't think he's the best QB in the FCS.

But that's fine, those are opinions. When you start stating opinion as absolute fact though, that's when you start coming off as someone who has no clue what they're talking about.

You missed the whole point

the challenge of betting $100 if one player wins and losing the $100 if ANY OTHER PLAYER WINS, by any means a totally unfair bet

and then challenging by betting $100 for one player versus $10,000 for the other player

and calling the player a child and coward if he doesn't take this unfair bet

so all I did was turn the table

Fine, you were turning the tables. The thing is, you were the one stating opinion as fact. Nobody else was saying that their player was 100% without a doubt the best player in the FCS.
We're just saying there's no way to know that he's the best player, and we think that there's at least a few other players that, at this point, look to be stronger candidates.

Fair enough, you can ask for whatever terms you want in this.

Personally, I view this as a bettor vs house situation rather than one bettor vs another bettor.

It's like if I go to Vegas and say, "my Cubs are the best baseball team" and I place a bet that they'll win the World Series.
The house doesn't then go and say "no, the Red Sox are the best" and put money on the Sox. The house says, "ok, if the Cubs win, you win money, if they do not, you lose the money".

World said that Lovett was "the best player in the FCS". If he's willing to bet on that...fine. Some of you guys who have all kinds of $ to spend on bets like this are essentially playing the "house" in this situation. It's a matter of what the "odds" are that you all can work out.

Seems like much ado about nothing. He's excited about a Princeton player, something that probably happens rarely. And it's just one of the millions of homer statements made around here daily. God forbid anyone other than an NDSU, SDSU, or JMU fan ever be positive about something, off-base or not.

Also the best player in FCS is Troy Andersen. Or at least he would be if his position didn't change every possession.

Taryn Christion 2 games 34/43 for 79.1% 651 yds and 9 tds w/ 0 INTs.

If we’re going to use games against **** competition stats then there ya go.

Somewhat. The other thing that hampers ndsu is that they won’t schedule a home and home unless their road game is in a 12 game season.

That's not true, we played at EW last year in an 11 game season. If we can get an FBS then we are not going to travel to an FCS unless it's a 12 game season, need at least 6 home games every year.

That’s straight from Jeremy Jorgensons mouth this week man. I don’t make the news, I just report it.

So why do you think Lovett is better? Because he was forced to run?

Also important to note in the first two game Taryn played a total of 5 quarters or less.

You mean biggest stat whore, not best player, right? I just want to make sure you understand the Payton usually goes to the biggest stat whore, not best player. Streveler was the best player last year and yet Briscoe won it.

So, let's do a bet, I am a man of my word and I will put 100 dollars down that THE WALTER PAYTON AWARD will NOT go Lovett. What you say? Thumper can verify I pay up when I lose multple times to him. You are so high on him and you claim to know he is the best player, so let's see you man up and back your claims.

Yep, and Briscoe did it both ways.

Gubrud set the single season fCS passing record at 5106, 500 yards ahead of Briscoe, and he also came up just 33 yards short of Steve McNair's total yardage record that year so there's one exception to the rule but as you say, sometimes it's a stats thing which is unfortunate considering the disparities in scheduling. Briscoe would not have equaled Streveler playing in the MVC.

Briscoe would have been broken in half during the season if he played in the Valley.

actually, most of Lovett's runs are designed plays for him to run (he set a few records running for 20 TD's in 2016 and was hurt last year)

and, yep, Lovett also played only "a total of 5 quarters or less" in those two first games

Oh, by the way, Jimmy Moreland had a pick-6 for the 3rd straight game today -- 100 yarder this time.

He's legit; Lovett probably wouldn't be brave enough to throw his way (ask TC).

WR Davion Davis won't have the eye-popping numbers this year because of the more balanced offense and a freshman QB, but he is the best receiver in FCS in my opinion.

If he keeps this up, he’ll win the Buck going away.

I saw him play and he looked okay against LSU but not great. I do think he has a shot. Just needs to limit those picks. For me to add a new player they need to have a small number of picks and a couple weeks without one or just one over the next 3 games or so with several TDs and he should be added.

I would take you're reply more seriously if you didnt have a guy on your list with 8 picks.

We have been watching him since last year. I wonder if he will declare. I would push my team to take him in the 4th or 5th round right now. I just hope he keeps getting better and doesn't plateau before he is draft eligible.

Hodges was on the preseason list and he is likely to drop off this week or next week. He has not looked good but he was a name already on the list. I don't add guys with a lot of picks early on.

I'm a bit skeptical when a guy continually gets 50% more assists than solo tackles. Getting near the pile generally gets a guy the benefit of the doubt. Makes me think of Brian Bosworth.

I will try to go watch some highlights on this guy though; seems to be a good active LB.

I'm still on my guy's -- Jimmy Moreland -- bandwagon. Had his 3rd straight game with a pick-6, this one a 100-yarder. Last week was a 60 yarder where he benefitted from a monster pass rush. The first one was only 20 yards, but he was 5 yards in the backfield when he pick off the WR tunnel screen.

Doing another Tyrie Adams (WCU QB) Public Service Announcement. Western lost to Furman on Saturday, but not because of Adams, who went 25-36 for 424 yards, 5 TDs, and 0 INT. He also had 48 rushing yards (was bottled-up after rushing for over 100 yards each of the previous 2 weeks).

For the season:
76-119 (64.2%), 1023 yards, 10 TDs, 2 INT, 160.4 EFFICIENCY / 352 rushes, 4 TDs, 5.4 YPC
Total of 1375 yards and 14 TDs accounted for in 4 games (3.5 TDs/game)

Maybe his team he roots for, not who he works for? I thought he was independent too.

Moreland has been on my watch list since the 2016 playoffs when he and JMU went lock down on Briscoe and the Jets aka Sam Houston State

he looked real smooth navigating a few hazards on his way back for 100 yards yesterday.... wonder what his time was

You got me wondering, so I timed it a couple times: about 13.3, but he did have to weave several times, plus he caught the ball moving into the end zone.
