Craig Haley tweet:

.@UNH_Football coach Sean McDonnell says it is doubtful QB Trevor Knight (AC sprain) will be healthy enough to play against Colgate on Saturday. Knight was injured in a loss at Maine last Thursday night and his shoulder is still in a sling.

That does sound like he may not be out for the whole season though. Some better news for UNH.

Though there is a rain chance on Saturday, I doubt the weather for the upcoming Lafayette/Delaware game will be as bad as it was the last time the Leopards and Blue Hens squared off in Newark. (Just ask Pards Rule about that game. xlolx)

I would offer you some local knowledge about home Delaware games but I dont have any ..... last game attended live in Newark was September 1983, The East stands were not that full and by the looks of it today on TV, if you want to stretch out a bit..... head over to the East Stands.... lots of room over there

That URI TD looked like it might've been knocked out half a foot before the goal line, but as they said, the call was a TD and there just wasn't enough conclusive video evidence that it should be overturned.

That roughing the passer call was god awful. He was already engaged in the tackle when the pass was beginning to be thrown.

This is telling three-fold:
1) The CAA is much stronger than any other FCS conference on the east coast.
2) The CAA needs to start scheduling better non-conference games. I know there’s been a lot of discussion about this among JMU fans, but this is a conference issue. Home-and-homes between perennial top 25 programs seem to be few and far between.
3) New Hampshire isn’t a good football team.

Yea this one really hurts. If we still get to 7-3 I don't see how we could be left out of the playoff field, though.

I don't understand why both parties couldn't have agreed to the week 1 of the FCS playoffs and if either team qualified for the playoffs, then the game would be cancelled. That's what Norfolk State and Liberty are doing.

I'm certain you'll get in 7-3, 6-4 could be problematic depending on how the rest of the field shapes up. The big win over Furman should help, particularly if they come back and do well in conference play. But don't worry, either way I'll put in a good word for Elon with Marty Scarano !

Thanks friend! Lol. But truly, if we go 6-4, Furman will probably not be our most impressive win, since we would have to beat 2 of either Towson, Delaware, Rhode Island, or Maine to do so. All of those teams seem much better than Furman this year. Even Richmond is probably better.

not a fan of injuries GT, that sucks

lot's of FCS QB's getting dinged up

JuJuan Lawson took a hit to the knee, sat out second half and Vito should go back to eating Cheeto's

Maine looked slow and uninspired on the visit to the Yale Bowl - second stringer did not look good

not CAA but Central Arkansas shifty starter went out late in the 4th Qtr, that sealed the deal for Sam Houston State in OT as the Back up should of stayed on the farm

I looked at how Massey predicts the rest of the season for the CAA and calculated it two ways, one using % win as a decimal and one using any % win as a whole win (the results are a bit different).

% Win as a decimal:
1. James Madison (9.59 - 1.41, 7.59 - 0.41 CAA)
2. Stony Brook (7.23 - 3.77, 5.23 - 2.77 CAA)
3. Rhode Island (6.92 - 4.08, 4.96 - 3.04 CAA)
4. Towson (6.75 - 4.25, 4.75 - 3.25 CAA)
5. Maine (5.56 - 5.44, 4.56 - 3.44 CAA)
6. Elon (5.98 - 4.02, 3.98 - 3.02 CAA)
7. Delaware (5.98 - 5.02, 3.98 - 4.02 CAA)
8. Villanova (6.50 - 4.50, 3.50 - 4.50 CAA)
9. Richmond (5.05 - 5.95, 3.05 - 4.95 CAA)
10. Albany (4.26 - 6.74, 2.26 - 5.74 CAA)
11. New Hampshire (2.60 - 8.40, 1.80 - 6.20 CAA)
12. William & Mary (2.34 - 7.66, 1.34 - 5.66 CAA)

%W over 50 = whole win:
1. James Madison (10-1, 8-0 CAA)
2. Stony Brook (8-3, 6-2 CAA) [Wins head to head tiebreak over Delaware]
3. Delaware (8-3, 6-2 CAA)
4. Elon (7-3, 5-2 CAA)
5. Towson (7-4, 5-3 CAA) [Both 1-1 v SBU and DEL; since SBU wins v DEL, Towson wins tiebreak]
6. Rhode Island (7-4, 5-3 CAA)
7. Villanova (7-4, 4-4 CAA)
8. Richmond (5-6, 3-5 CAA) [Wins head to head tiebreak over Maine]
9. Maine (4-7, 3-5 CAA)
10. New Hampshire (2-9, 1-7 CAA) [Wins head to head tiebreak over Albany]

Was just looking at JMU's remaining schedule and it's surprising how much it has become backloaded (at least as it looks right now). Their remaining games are Elon, @Nova, Stony Brook, @UNH, URI, and @Towson.

Who would've thought at the beginning of the year that the game at UNH would be their easiest game of that bunch? All the rest of those teams are currently ranked in the top 20 of the AGS Poll. That'll be highly impressive if the Dukes can run the table in the CAA again.

I think they’re going to start knocking each other off and some won’t end up being ranked by season’s end. Similar to what happens in the MVFC.

We’re currently 16 point favorites against all remaining opponents and that’s with sites thinking we only scored 17 against NSU.

I think Towson May have the best shot. They are a tough team with a really good QB. I don’t see any other teams staying close to JMU. Elon & Stony Brook would have had a puncher’s chance at home, but zero at Bridgeforth. Nova, UNH, & Rhody have no chance unless JMU team comes down with a widespread flu or something . xpeacex

No chance in my humble opinion, JMU is just to good.... the Defense could score enough points to win games, they dont even need an offense

the distance between JMU and the rest of the pack is getting worse instead of better..... were you saying something about the flu GT? Haha

I really don't think we will run the table -- that's a pretty daunting schedule out there. Then again I didn't think we'd hang 63 on Richmond either. I don't know how Mike Houston gets these guys to focus every week, but it's darn uncanny how locked in the Dukes are every week. We played N.C. State closer than anybody else (even though I don't think we ever had a real shot at winning that game) so far this season. The cumulative score of our four wins is 204-17, including 114-10 in our 2 conference games.

How will our offense react if it gets bottled up or our defense doesn't bring their A game? Brian Schor was our X-factor last year; he was able to manufacture that one drive that made the difference in many games in '17. Can DiNucci fill that role this year? How will we handle a close game?

Richmond fans are fewer and far between than Hen fans around these parts

If they don’t show up for the rest of the season, you can thank us. Man, that was beating a dead horse and then some.

I'm a SoCon fan so I am not up on all of the latest and greatest in the CAA, but....

Huesman seems to be struggling at Richmond - Thoughts? I wonder if he regrets leaving Chattanooga.

How good of a job has Curt Cignetti done at Elon. Elon had a few really good years under Pete Lembo, but were a dumpster fire when they left the SoCon. I wonder how long he sticks around before a G5 school that needs a rebuilding job throws $$$

Delaware able to beat a not so good Richmond team on the road, back up QB for Richmond .. Joe Mancuso did light up the Hens secondary for about 500 yards or so but was also picked off 5 times...... but he was chucking it all over the place

Delaware continues to rush 3 ... in name only

Colby Reeder steals one out of a receivers hands for a quick 6

Joe Walker, the converted QB, continues to impress as a WR.... should of been done on his first day of practice 4 years ago....

Delaware was up 43-16 at the start of the 4th and Rocco pulls the starters, Richmond started a comeback that left Hen fans wondering what the heck Rocco was up too.....

Elon, I hope you read your press clippings this week..... Delaware will need all the help we can get for the rising Phoenix

How Massey predicts the CAA will end after Week 6

Using odds of winning:
1. James Madison (8.31 - 2.69, 6.31 - 1.69 CAA [0.789])
2. Elon (7.23 - 2.77, 5.23 - 1.77 CAA [0.747])
3. Towson (7.60 - 3.40, 5.60 - 2.40 CAA [0.700])
4. Maine (6.15 - 4.85, 5.15 - 2.85 CAA [0.644])
5. Rhode Island (7.08 - 3.92, 5.08 - 2.92 CAA [0.635])
6. Delaware (6.68 - 4.32, 4.68 - 3.32 CAA [0.585])
7. Stony Brook (6.38 - 4.62, 4.38 - 3.62 CAA [0.548])
8. Villanova (5.96 - 5.04, 2.96 - 5.04 CAA [0.370])
9. William & Mary (2.87 - 7.13, 1.87 - 5.13 CAA [0.267])
T10. New Hampshire (3.12 - 7.88, 2.12 - 5.88 CAA [0.265])*
T10. Richmond (4.12 - 6.88, 2.12 - 5.88 CAA [0.265])*
12. Albany (3.50 - 7.50, 1.50 - 6.50 CAA [0.188])
*I'm sure I could calculate a tiebreak in this scenario, but the percentages make it more complex

Counting any odds of a win over 50 as a whole win:
1. Delaware (9-2, 7-1 CAA) [Wins tiebreak due to better record v best common opponent (Elon)]
2. James Madison (9-2, 7-1 CAA)
3. Elon (8-2, 6-1 CAA)
4. Towson (7-4, 5-3 CAA) [2-0 v tied teams]
5. Stony Brook (7-4, 5-3 CAA) [1-0 v tied teams (after Towson wins first tiebreak)]
6. Rhode Island (7-4, 5-3 CAA) [Wins head to head tiebreak v Maine (after Towson and Stony Brook win tiebreaks)]
7. Maine (6-5, 5-3 CAA)
8. Villanova (6-5, 3-5 CAA)
9. Richmond (4-7, 2-6 CAA)
10. William & Mary (2-8, 1-6 CAA)
11. New Hampshire (2-9, 1-7 CAA)
12. Albany (2-9, 0-8 CAA)

The finishes average to:
1. James Madison: 1, 2 (1.5)
2. Elon: 2, 3 (2.5)
T3. Delaware: 6, 1 (3.5)
T3. Towson: 3, 4 (3.5)
T5. Maine: 4, 7 (5.5)
T5. Rhode Island: 5, 6 (5.5)
7. Stony Brook: 7, 5 (6)
8. Villanova: 8, 8 (8)
T9. Richmond: 10, 9 (9.5)
T9. William & Mary: 9, 10 (9.5)
11. New Hampshire: 10, 11 (10.5)
12. Albany: 12, 12 (12)

The CAA is definitely up there with the MVFC as the best conference and JMU, Elon, and Towson are top 10 teams.

There's also another echelon of teams that will also compete for playoff spots (Delaware, Maine, Rhode Island, Stony Brook and maybe Villanova)

But...

I can't help but think the CAA has something of a bubble right now that's going to be burst. At least 2-3 of the teams listed above are going to finish with at least 4 losses.

Actually, not to different than where SoCon seems to be heading at this point in the season. Wofford is the only team clearly on track to be a playoff team - everyone else is killing one another off. I only had Wofford and ETSU ranked this week, and ETSU is barely in and I still expect them to falter. The conference as a whole is probably better than two teams ranked, but I couldn't justify picking any other team right now.

I'm not ready to cede top 3 status to Towson yet. In fact I think Rhode Island has been a better team. Towson has gotten a lot of credibility for back to back wins over Nova and Stony Brook; however, I see both Nova and SB finishing no better than 4 -4 in Conference Play when all the games have been played. Towson's success is totally reliant on Flacco, and as we have seen from Knight (UNH), Ferguson (Maine), Bednarczyk (Villanova), the life expectancy of a CAA QB is not a full season.

My general point here is that it's hard to tell how good those second tier teams are in the CAA and so it's kind of circular, which is expected at this point in the season.

Maine/Nova/Stony Brook/Delaware look to have circular resumes at the end of the season and I'm tempted to freeze ranking them for now

What's the status of Ferguson?

That's an important question...

As a biased Maine fan it is easy to dream that we could be 5-0 right now if it wasn't for the injury. Our defense is legit...need #14 back to move the ball.

Hoping he gets back soon.

So true GT. What was a defensive battle could have easily been a shootout with both teams starting QB's there. Our backup QB Robinson played much better than he did against Yale. Coaching staff limited his throws in the middle field, he had a couple of nice zone read runs and when he thru on the outside he was pretty effective. Maine is also missing their #1 RB Jefferson so they improvised letting WR Edwards do a couple of end runs that were effective as well. The problem is I am not sure we can score enough to keep pace with Rhody if we don't get Ferguson back. His status is day to day as it was last week. Don't think any coach wants to show their hand until kickoff.
GT- good luck with JMU!!!

Congrats to u guys. I watched in disbelief as that kicker booted a 52yarder as time expired. Heartbreaking pair of losses for Nova as the week before we blew a 21-0 lead at Stony Brook. Nova will not challenge JMU w/o our starting QB. I think Nova has to win all 5 games to rescue the season. Very, very doubtful given the current status, but if they somehow get by JMU (I don’t see it) then things get brighter for the ‘Cats. Good luck with Rhody. They are legit if Lawson plays. xpeacex

I can't imagine they would rush him back, considering the only two tough games after this Rhody game for Maine are Towson and Elon. But then again, they might rush him to get back for this game and then rest him for W&M if needed. We just don't know enough about his specific condition to tell.

University of Maine quarterback Chris Ferguson

By Larry Mahoney (https://bangordailynews.com/author/larry-mahoney/), BDN Staff • October 9, 2018 6:56 pmORONO, Maine — University of Maine quarterback Chris Ferguson returned to the practice field on Tuesday for the first time since suffering an injury to his throwing shoulder in the first quarter of a 17-5 loss to Central Michigan on Sept. 22.
Ferguson hopes to return for Saturday’s Colonial Athletic Association showdown at the University of Rhode Island.

“It’s good to get back out here throwing, getting back into the groove,” said Ferguson, who couldn’t say whether he will be ready for Saturday.
“It’s day-by-day. I’m out here practicing, which is good. It’s positive. Being with the team, getting reps is important,” he said. “That decision won’t be made until later in the week.”
“Ultimately, it will come down to what is best for the team and what is best for me,” he added.

Ferguson said he isn’t “100 percent but nobody is [at this time of the season]. There are still some things that we have to get better. I’ll be with Ryan [UMaine head athletic trainer Ryan Taylor] in the training room with those .”
He said he held back a little on Tuesday, saying “I went half to three-quarters” and that his arm strength was good.
“I’m going to trust in God and his plan and what he is going to do with me,” Ferguson added. “I keep believing. The past couple of weeks have been tough, but I remained positive most of the time. I was rehabbing and doing the things I needed to do. I learned a lot and matured a lot, which is good.”

Ferguson completed 35 of 53 passes for 405 yards and five touchdowns through the first two-plus games. He was intercepted once.
Last season, he completed 171-of-313 passes for 2,064 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was intercepted 11 times.
Redshirt freshman Isaiah Robinson (https://bangordailynews.com/2018/09/25/sports/umaine-sports/umaine-redshirt-freshman-quarterback-prepping-for-yale-game/) has filled in for him this season, completing 42 of 89 passes for 487 yards and two TDs. He has been intercepted four times.

UMaine head coach Joe Harasymiak said Ferguson looked good Tuesday.
“He had good zip on the ball,” he said. “It was his first full practice so he was limited. We’ll see how he comes back tomorrow. We’ll see how he recovers. That will be the big thing. We’ll see about the fatigue factor going into Wednesday and Thursday.”
Redshirt freshman running back Ramon Jefferson, who missed the Villanova game with a hamstring injury, also returned to practice on Tuesday in limited duty, and he could be back for Saturday’s game, according to Harasymiak.

However, Harasymiak added that he will have to see how Jefferson recovers during the week before he has him suit up Saturday.
Jefferson has rushed for 221 yards on 40 carries for an average of 5.5 yards per carry. He has also caught two passes for 53 yards and a touchdown.

In case you were planning ahead:

MULTIPLE TEAMS IN THE FCS PLAYOFFS: For the fourth year in a row, four CAA Football teams (Elon, James Madison, New Hampshire and Stony Brook) were chosen to the NCAA Division I Football Championship field in 2017. CAA Football has had multiple teams in the playoffs for 27 straight years and three or more teams in the playoff field for 12 years in a row. It was the 10th time in league history that at least four teams were chosen. CAA Football had a league-record five teams picked in 2007, 2008 and 2011.

We have SBU at home after our open date, though going up there doesn't bother me -- the last JMU team to play @ SBU brought home a national championship (women's lax) this past May!

Wanting to see SBU beat UDel and us win out -- secures the autobid since the best Elon can do is 6-1 in conference. JMU would finish with an .875 winning percentage to Elon's .857 and winning out would give the Dukes the H2H over Towson.

So, have a nice trip to LI, but not a winning trip! xpeacex

No worries. Nova has the Blue Chicks taken care of for you guys if SB doesn’t get the job done. The maligned backup beat them 28-7 last season and Nova had only pride to play for.

BTW, Coach Ferrante hinted that our 6 injured starters including the QB are expected back after the bye this week. We may be just be able to win a CAA game or more this season if true. xpeacex

well with 6 losses now, it seems pretty safe to declare New Hampshire dead and the playoff streak over, not even Magic Marty can gloss this over

UNH just didnt look like they wanted to be there yesterday, beaten up badly by the physical Delaware Defense, forced 6 turnovers or so

Delaware needed this effort from the D as our Offense was in neutral for the better part of the day

Big game coming up in Newark as Little Bro of Joe leads Towson into Delaware....

Hoping the Hens kept things vanilla yesterday by design and just worked on pounding Kane into the line which didnt work well

We caught a fierce Tiger that day. We scored early & took a 14-0 lead. Ambrose was a crazed man that day on the sideline. We had them pinned down inside their 5 & punting when a frosh DE got called for roughing Flacco. Two plays later they hit a slant where our 2 DBs collided attempting to tackle & the receiver was off to the races for a 75 yard TD. Ensuing KO our returner took a wicked hit & fumbles. I believe Troy Vincent, Jr. scooped & scored. 14-14 and from that moment on Towson owned the game. Nova went down 35-14 before attempting to get off the deck. 45-35 final. Nova defense missed a lot of tackles that day. We play a 3-3-5 & it’s very vanilla with no dynamic blitzes or stunts. Flacco was on fire that day & hasn’t been extinguished yet.

I watched you guys vs. New Hampshire. You will need to figure out a way to pressure him. He’s got Houdini like moves as he escapes a lot of pressure. He looks like he couldn’t run a lick, but he has deceiving acceleration.

I would think Delaware with 2 highly skilled inside backers will spy him out of the 3-4. I honestly will tell you that I’d be very surprised if they don’t put up 30+ on you guys. They are that good. Best offensive team we have played to date including JMU. They play fast & don’t give u a chance to breath.

My bet is Rocco will try to ground & pound to shorten the game. I think Towson is at the top of the CAA with JMU.

GL Carrib. I’ll be real impressed if the Blue Hens win & it will probably not bode well for my Wildcats in the season finale if you do. xpeacex

why is he not at Delaware? sources say Delaware recruited him hard out of high school, he wanted to play FBS is the word

GT, That is an outstanding eyes on the ground report on Towson and Flacco, I dont think putting pressure on him will do much of any good, he seems to thrive on that... like you said, he has not only is quick but actually has speed

The Ground and Pound attack worked well on the first drive at New Hampshire but after that it was gone...... very vanilla, Kehoe only threw it about 10 times..... he would like to ground and pound but has not been able to get it done for the most part with that style

He will need to open it up with all he's got if he wants to stay in it

Hens have to deal with brother of former UD starOct 22nd, 2018 · by Andy Walter (https://delawarestatenews.net/byline/andy-walter/) · Comments:

(Delaware sports information/Mark Campbell)

NEWARK — It’s been over a decade since there was a Flacco playing quarterback in Delaware Stadium.
But you can understand if Delaware football fans won’t be cheering for this Flacco on Saturday afternoon.
Tom Flacco, the younger brother of former Blue Hen star, Joe, will be the star attraction when No. 10 Towson (4-0 CAA, 6-1 overall) comes to Newark on Saturday for a homecoming showdown with No. 21 Delaware (3-1 CAA, 5-2 overall).
A first-year transfer from Rutgers, the younger Flacco is having a breakout season for the Tigers.
The 6-foot-1, 208-pound junior leads the Colonial Athletic Association in total offense (355.9 yards), passing yards per game (282.3 yards) and is fourth in rushing (73.6 yards). Those kind of numbers are why Flacco was recently named to the watch list for the Walter Payton Award, which goes to the top offensive player in FCS Division I.
While Flacco was offered a scholarship by Delaware when he came out of high school four years ago, he chose not to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

He did say no to Delaware out of high school & it had 100% to do with the coaching staff from what I was told. I don't know if it was Brock's time at Rutgers or at Delaware that put the Flacco's off but that's why he didn't end up at UD.

Bad news on the new construction project too - fundraising not hitting target(s), 12 month delay to be announced soon....

Bill I am having a tough time thinking that's right. We were $1.8Mil away from the goal as of two weeks ago and Chrissi is slated to come and speak to the TD club this week on this very subject. Let's hope we are proceeding as planned. I can't bare the thought of looking at the blue boxes another season!!!

GL Carrib. I’ll be real impressed if the Blue Hens win & it will probably not bode well for my Wildcats in the season finale if you do. xpeacex

just saw the hit on the Kickoff you spoke of, wicked is right, the Towson player looked as though he knocked not only the return man but himself into another dimension, surely he suffered some degree of a concussion on that hit, wow

Looks like you had your way with Towson via the Airways ....... Towson can be passed on, I dont know how that will play out tomorrow with the weather

Maybe, but Nova was behind 35-14 at half. Tucked away the run game the rest of the way. Sometimes stats can be deceiving. I don’t expect a lot of passing up & down the East coast tomorrow with winds gusting 40-50 mph. Advantage Blue Chickens tomorrow for least affected by weather.

I made that Towson can be passed on comment only based on the eyeball test GT

But several of the pass plays show wide-open receivers that day

Sounds like the worst of the weather has moved along to the north no rain but still gusty

Have to agree that this is an advantage for the blue hens

But Flacco is still a weapon with his feet, I can’t believe for a second he could not have been a good quarterback at Dud Rutgers

Nova has scored a total of 16 Points in their last 3.5 games. It’s started out so promising with a win over FBS Temple, but it’s downright ugly to watch football right now.

Don’t see how Nova wins another game this season. Defense has also folded their collective tents the past 2 games. It’s yours to take Delaware this season. This Kitty isn’t roaring anytime soon. xpeacex

I was very suprised by that outcome GT, after the Temple win I really thought Nova was in for a real good year, but not to be

Delaware did go to the air and held on to take down Flacco and Towson in a thriller....... after Delaware went up with 30 seconds left, Towson hits on a 70 yard kick off return, had to listen to the game on the radio, still waiting for the announcers to call a few of the TDs

Never say never, but I'd pick them as solid favorites over any CAA team. Several CAA teams could beat the rest of the MVFC and if you matched up the current top 6 CAA teams with the top 6 MVFC teams in head to head competition on any given Saturday IMO the CAA would come out the winner - but it would be one great day of competition!

but even if we are short by 1-3 million, there should be no reason they can not start the job. you do not pay cash up front for a construction project. so they should have plenty committed to start the project and that 1-3 million would be in the bank well before the end of construction.....

So, we're essentially looking at seven teams fighting for five bid:

Delaware 4-1 6-2
James Madison 4-1 6-2
Towson 4-1 6-2
Maine 4-1 5-3
Elon 3-1 5-2
Stony Brook 4-2 6-3
Rhode Island 3-2 5-3

A normal year would mean any 7-4 CAA team gets in, but let's look at what each team would have as a 7-4 resume.

Delaware (needs at least 1-2)
Remaining Schedule: @UA, @SBU, VU
The Hens arguably have the highest quality wins so far in conference in home wins over Elon and Towson. They can go 1-2 in the last three to get to seven wins, but that would include a slip-up to Albany or Villanova, who are a combined 0-10 in the CAA. Stony Brook is the test. A win on LI locks up a berth, Marty Scarano notwithstanding.

James Madison (needs at least 1-2)
Remaining Schedule: @UNH, URI, @TU
The Dukes best win is over Stony Brook. A 1-2 finish either includes no additional quality wins over Rhode Island or Towson, or a bad loss to New Hampshire. Give the Dukes the benefit of the doubt, even with the weak FCS OOC schedule, they're in.

Towson (needs at least 1-2)
Remaining Schedule: UM, @EU, JMU
Look at that gauntlet. Ouch. The good news is there are no bad losses. However, beating Maine and dropping the last two with keep the Tigers firmly on the bubble.

Maine (needs at least 2-1)
Remaining Schedule: @TU, @UR, EU
Maine's conference schedule hurts them. No UD, JMU, or SBU. The Black Bears need to win two out of the last three to get to 7-4. No quality wins other than URI so far, so the Bears need to win out.

Elon (needs at least 2-1)
Remaining Schedule: URI, TU, @UM
Second toughest schedule down the stretch behind Towson. Another team that needs to go 2-1 to get to 7 wins. The JMU win is enormous. You open up the argument that if the W&M was played and won, do the Phoenix get in at 7-4? With no bad losses, the answer may be yes. November 17 in Orono might be a win and get in.

Stony Brook (needs at least 1-1)
Remaining Schedule: Idle, UD, @UA
Beat Delaware and they're in. Best win currently is over Rhode Island. Bubble.

Rhode Island (needs at least 2-1)
Remaining Schedule: @EU, @JMU, UNH
Needs to finish 2-1. Conference losses to Maine and Stony Brook. The opening week win over UD might what tips the scales in the Rams' favor.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that Delaware, JMU, and Maine all win out and finish at 7-1. The problem is, they don't play one another. Obviously, all three would be in (with UD and JMU grabbing seeds), but for trivial purposes, who gets the AQ?

It would go to record against common opponents, starting at the top of the standings and working down. So the AQ is most likely going to go to Maine. There's one unlikely exception - if Elon finishes behind both URI and W&M, JMU would get the AQ.

I understand the intent of the tiebreaker, but it's kinda strange that the team with the worst loss by conference record would win the AQ.

Easiest scenarios for AQ (I think):
- Delaware: Win out AND 1 MAINE loss AND ELON > URI in final standings

- Elon: Win out AND 1 DEL loss AND 1 JMU loss

- James Madison: Win out AND 1 MAINE loss AND URI > ELON in final standings OR Win out AND URI > ELON AND W&M > or = ELON

- Maine: Win out AND ELON > W&M

- Towson: Win out AND 1 DEL loss

Stony Brook and Delaware are sitting in their own private bubble, and the loser of that game might stay home. They are heavy favorites in the other games each plays. If SB beats UD, they are both at 6-2, but SB will have H2H.

Personally, I wouldn't want to play a pissed-off SB team at home off a bye.

Nor does an 8-3 Stony Brook.

One thing is certain, one or more damn good teams from the CAA will be on the outside.

I just don't see URI hanging onto the bubble, and we still don't really know what to make of Elon with their injuries, so even if they drop off, do 5 get in?

We should get 5 teams in, not saying we deserve 5 but teams that are bubble teams in other conferences keep losing. If more lose this week we very well could get 5. unfortunately we are probably going to have 2 H2H matchups in the second round if teams win during the opening weekend of the playoffs.

That was a 20 team field. Have a hard time seeing an 8-3 CAA team left out of a 24 team field. But that all depends on bubble teams from other conferences.

An 8-3 UD team, in a 24 team field, is a mortal lock for the playoffs in any year, no matter what bubble there is.

The committee could fall in love with a third SLC, second OVC or A&T. I know the committee doesn't use other polls, but so far, they love those teams. Now, they should take them from the MVFC, which isn't as deep as the CAA, but we've seen this movie before.

Breath in, breath out, move on! You showed up in Durham NH on the wrong Saturday and turned the ball over 6 times. Look what happened to SDSU last December? JMU will be back in the playoffs and you won't have to contend with UNH again. After an initial slow start Cole Johnson actually played very well today. You also didn't have Marcus Marshall today either - I suspected he would have been your most effective runner against UNH and your QB wouldn't have been forced into so many obvious passing situations which always leads to sacks and interceptions.

JMU will not make the playoffs -- the QB room is in shambles and the offense has been horribly ineffective for most of the last 4 games. Rhody has their QB back and Towson has been very good at home. What a disappointment. This team is the exact opposite of the 2014/15 Dukes when the defense couldn't stop a HS offense. It irreperably fractured the locker room, and the current trend of this team makes a recurrence a true concern.

Calm down. JMU historically plays like crap at UNH. This is nothing new. Next week the Dukes take on URI in Harrisonburg. Cole Johnson will have a week of full time reps with the 1's and I believe we also have our starting LG returning from suspension. Dukes will be fine. 2 more weeks and we can all be 0-0 again.

Looks lie Delaware is positioned to be at least a Co-CAA champ. Currently we have a three teams left with on loss-Delaware, Maine and Elon.

Delaware beat Elon already this season and their only conference loss is to Rhody and Delaware has a good chance to win out against Stony and Nova while the other two teams with one loss - Elon and Maine- play each other the final game of the season at Maine. Next week Maine travels to the failing Spiders while Elon host Towson. Since Elon already lost to Delaware, they are out and if Elon beats Maine then Maine is out with Delaware sole Champs. If Maine beats Elon then they are co-conference champs with a record of 7-1. Maine lost to the Tribe. Based in the tie breaker rules it appears both teams beat all the teams they played tied for 2 losses. Two may options past that point to know who will finish with only 3 losses.

Delaware won't beat both Stony Brook and Villanova. Maine has the best chance of going 7-1, but they have a history of blowing big games at the end of the season - maybe that has changed after several seasons under HC Harasymiak. Elon may sneak in at 7-1, but I doubt they beat both Towson and Maine. So in order of likelihood of finishing 7-1, I see it Maine, Elon and Delaware - in that order. But the most likely outcome is a slew of 6-2 teams. This is more like the CAA tradition where the "best" team doesn't always win the Conference Championship and sometimes doesn't even make the playoffs (like Towson 2012).

Er... From what I saw with my beer colored glasses (From drinking away the sorrows of an awful season), Delaware will be hard pressed to win out. Stoney Brook is every bit as average as they are. Neither played all that inspiring against UNH, who has one of the historically worst offenses since the inception of the forward pass. And 'Nova has a habit of handing Delaware devastating losses in their last game. I think they drop one of those two. I really think it's shaping up well for Maine. As I stated in another post, I just don't see a dominant team coming out of the CAA this year.

Dear Mr. Chicken Gawk,

Congrats on your win over Albany. Villanova is on the run to save the mediocre coaching staff now. No one is worried about the Reeder Boys this weekend. All eyes are focused on the honorable coach Laycock & his Injuns this week. You should worry about that other team from New Yawk for now. Blue Chickens play like they did on Saturday & you’ll be hung with a L there.

Old Troy has 10 tackles in 2 losses to Nova & he’s been exposed by our backs making him cover one-on-one in pass plays. He’s a great Hen for sure, but no one paying close attention to his performances against Nova sees him like you & many do. He’s got great #s, but he’s done zippo against Nova. You would have to agree on that. No? Maybe this is his year? Two Saturdays from now will tell.

I have no no doubt if we go with our talented true frosh at QB that the Delaware defense will make it a long day for Nova. Qadir Ishmail will be a player in this league, but I’m hopeful that Zach Bednarczyk will take on the Blue Chickens in New-ark. I think UNH was rock bottom for Nova. The team is coming off that bottom hopefully. You may see a team closer to the one that beat Temple than the one that fell apart in the CAA.

Just the sight of all that Blue & Chicken Yellow will have our team up. Frosh QB it will be tough this year, but if a healthy 14 trots out in the 302 then you may have bitten off more chicken feed than u can chew once again.

Beating each other up will not help seedings. I am so proud of Elon's turn around. Their attitude and approach from great coaching and the players buying into that philosophy make this old Alum grateful to be a part of this conversation. It will be an interesting last two weeks for sure. Three teams control or almost control their fate for the AQ and finishing with one CAA loss. If Maine wins out, they have the AQ. If Delaware wins out and Maine loses at least one, they have the AQ. If Elon wins out and Delaware loses at least one, they have the AQ.

The fun would be entering the last week if Stony Brook, Towson, Richmond, and James Madison win Saturday. Then you have 5 teams tied at 5-2, and potentially another 4-way tie for the title.

Ive heard differning opinions on the bye week factor, but the Lobos De Mar have had an xtra week to rest and study up for the Hens

Kind of crazy Delaware has to travel to Port Jeff twice in a calender year, last years game was right after Joe Walker was benched as starting QB and we started Caruso got his first start if I remember correctly, You were up 20 to 10 with about 8 minutes left in third quarter when the game turned on a fumble that popped right up into the hands of CB Malcolm Brown who scooted into the EZ, and the Hens went on to win that game

This year we have developed a passing game, as Kehoe has given the Hens a dimension that was just not there last year and aided by now WR Joe Walker who still cameos as QB in wildcat, WR Papale has also come on strong in his senior year.
Delaware D is still very good, maybe a tick down from last year, but still a hard hitting physical team led by Troy Reeder at LB and Safety Nassir Adderley

I like Carbone and your RB Liotkine is a low leverage ball of energy like a mad Bull with some speed to go with it, not an easy guy to tackle leads CAA in rushing and Gowins (pronounced Gohens) is #2 in CAA

Yes, this one will probably be a crazy game and the CAA has proven this year that trying to make predictions is a fools game

Henny Henny Henny,

All good natured fun I throw at your Blue Chicks. I spy the Gohens site & read all the venomous stuff written about my Cats so I’m just doing my part to even things up a bit here. Some of you fanatics want to burn carrib at the stake for actually appearing to be friendly to a Cats fan here. I read it all.

Troy will be gone soon enough. He’s due to have a big game against us especially if we throw him a bone with a raw frosh QB. Colby makes great plays now & then. He certainly looks the part, but he gets a lot of hype for a 3-4 tackle a game player. I get it. The Reeder Family is the Kardashians of Delaware. Everyone is fixated on their every move in that tiny state.

Hopefully, the Blew Chicks can wrap up their playoff spot on the Island. Really would put a lot of pressure on your “progressing” program to have to beat the basketball school on the final day to ensure your entrance in the dance with an 8th win.

We were “mildcats” last year as your playoff hopes vanished right in front of u. How did that work out for you guys? Were you in the stands that day thinking your program was headed in the right direction? Thanks for the breakdown GT. One cool thing is that whoever wins the league will have earned it. Big weeks ahead for everyone. Maine seems to have the easiest path to the the title but that means little in the CAA. Stony Brook could be 6-2. I expect JMU will be 6-2. Towson is a real good team but what a tough ending schedule. Same for Elon. Delaware needs to pass the test this weekend. It could all come down to Elon at Maine!

Anyone else fed up with CAA media through CaaSports.com? Tried again to listen to coaches interviews this morning and the Stretch Internet service would not work. I'm batting about .500 with that show this year. This CAA regime has been more about excuses than anything else. I'll be talking to our AD about pushing for change at the league offices.

While I love the idea of us crashing the CAA down to the ground in chaos, I don't think it will happen. Maine is looking really good and we are too one-dimensional.

Maine has clinched their 13th YC/A10/CAA title. A win on Saturday would have them win the league outright for the fifth time.

Yes, they are the only team that could still end up 7-1 in the conference. However, that have to win next Saturday to clinch the auto-bid, otherwise they will be in a tie with a slew of other 6-2 CAA teams - they go through a series of tie-breaking procedures that I think would end up being the comparative win/loss records of the tied teams against one another.

melloware13

I just sat through it, but it's based on my interpretation of the tiebreaks in the 2016 manual, starting with two team ties and going up to the possible 4's. If Maine loses, the JMU v TOW winner will be tied with them no matter what.

If Albany, Elon, and Villanova Win:
James Madison v Maine:

If W&M OR URI Win: JMU wins AQ
If RICH AND UNH Win: MAINE wins AQ

Maine v Towson: Maine wins AQ

If Elon, Stony Brook, and Villanova win:
James Madison v Maine v Stony Brook:

Best common opponent: Towson (Stony Brook eliminated)
See: JMU v Maine

Maine v Stony Brook v Towson:

Record among tied teams: Maine 1-0; Towson 1-1; Stony Brook 0-1 (I think they go by this, and Maine gets AQ, but since Maine and Stony Brook didn’t play it could be skipped possibly).
If they skip, no common opponent of all 3 with different result, would go to Sagarin ELO_CHESS

If Albany, Delaware, and Elon win:
Delaware v James Madison v Maine:

Best common opponent: Elon (Delaware wins AQ)

Delaware v Maine v Towson:

Record among tied teams: Delaware 1-0; Maine 1-0; Towson 0-2 (Towson eliminated)
Best common opponent: Elon (Delaware wins AQ)

If Delaware, Elon, and Stony Brook win:
Delaware v James Madison v Maine v Stony Brook

Record among tied teams: Delaware 0-1; James Madison 1-0; Maine 0-0; Stony Brook 1-1 (Delaware eliminated? – if so, see JMU v Maine v SBU; proceeding as if not since Maine is 0-0)
Best common opponent (all 4): Towson (Stony Brook Eliminated)
Best common opponent (UD, JMU, UM): Elon (Delaware wins AQ)

Delaware v Maine v Stony Brook v Towson

Record among tied teams: Delaware 1-1; Maine 1-0; Stony Brook 1-1; Towson 1-2 (Could have Maine win AQ, Towson eliminated, or skipped since Maine didn’t play either UD or SBU)
If skipped: Sagarin ELO_CHESS
If Towson eliminated: Best common opponent (UD, UM, SBU): Towson (Stony Brook eliminated)
Best common opponent (UD, UM): Elon (Delaware wins AQ)

Elon playing fewer games is going to complicate the heck out of this. What does the conference do with a 5-2 Elon and multiple 6-2 teams?

Also, I read the multi-team tie differently than you.

Head-to-head competition. If three-or-more teams are involved in a tie and all have played each other, the win-loss percentage is computed using each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than individually.

I think you skip the head-to-head entirely if some combo of Maine/SBU, Maine/JMU or Maine/Delaware is involved.

I think the winner of JMU-Towson gets a seed along with Maine if they beat Elon. Something tells me if that happens, Colgate gets bumped down and is matched up with one of the two in the second round.

I just posted the following analysis of the liklihood of 6 CAA teams getting into the playoffs this year to the local UNH Board. Thought I'd post it to this thread to see how he stands up to the scutiny of this learned and distinguished audience:

Six is normally too much of a stretch; however, most of the conferences that provide the majority of the at-large teams are having even more problems with teams failing to pull away from the pack.

The MVFC could end up with only 2 teams 7-4 or better IF Western Illinois beats Indiana State next Saturday, but at most they will have 3 teams 7-4 or better, The SoCon has only 2 teams that will end up 7-4 or better, Wofford and ETSU. Furman is currently 5-4 going into their last game - they are in the same boat as Elon having had their Colgate game cancelled due to the Hurricane, but since they were soundly thrashed by Elon head to head, they're not getting picked over Elon if they manage to match win-loss records. The Southland conference is what they call on AGS a "dumpster fire". The only sure thing for them will be their auto-bid, Nichols. Recent perennial SL playoff teams Sam Houston and Central Arkansas already have 5 losses. McNeese and Lamar are both 6-4, so the winner could get a 2nd SL Conf. playoff slot. There is one other 6-4 SL team, Incarnate Word. However they have no more games before selection Sunday having rescheduled a game with Iowa St for December 1st -one I think we could safely assume would have been a L had it been played before the selections. The NEC will only get an auto-bid and even that is generous this year. After Colgate no one in the Patriot League is even worthy of mention. Either Holy Cross or Georgetown will end up as their #2 team. Briefly the MEAC looked like they might end up with NC A&T in the FCS and Florida A&M in the Celebration Bowl, after they beat NC A&T 3 weeks ago. However, since then FL A&M has not won a game and NC A&T has retaken charge and will end up in the Celebration Bowl with no other MEAC getting a playoff bid. No one in the SWAC can end up 7-4 other than Alcorn St, and they will be in the Celebration Bowl. Kennesaw State is light years better than other Big South teams, Monmouth will end up at least 7-4 but their wins have been a who's not who list of the worst teams in FCS football and they lost by 40ish points to the only two FCS quality opponents they face, Kennesaw and Princeton. The OVC is dominated by Jacksonville State again, but they could end up with an at large for SE Missouri St.

If you add up the 11 auto-bids, plus the following at-large bids: MVFC-2, SoCon-1, SL-1, OVC-1 that leaves 8 at-large bids for the CAA and Big Sky.

The Big Sky will have at least 4 teams at least 7-4, but no more than 5. There are 3 teams 8-2 currently (EWU, UC Davis and Weber). There are 3 teams 6-4 (Montana, Montana St and Idaho St) The first two play each other next Saturday so only one will end up 7-4, and Idaho St plays Weber St. and Weber is definitely favored. That makes it most likely that 4 Big Sky teams end up 7-4 or better, using only 3 at-large bids and leaving 5 at-large bids for the CAA!

The most likely occurrences that might change that scenario in order of probability are: 1. Indiana State beats W. Illinois and ends up 7-4. 2. Idaho ST beats Weber St. 3. Monmouth wins their last game, ends up 8-3 and the selection committee ignores how bad the 8 teams they've beaten are and how horrendous Monmouth has been vs the quality teams they've played. 4. Eastern Kentucky wins their last game and ends up 7-4, third in the OVC, and the committee fails to notice numerous indications of how weak a 7-4 team they are like eecking out a 1 point win over Robert Morris, a team JMU beat 73-7 and losing to JSU 56-7.

Good rundown KPSUL, This could be one of those years where the committee throws bones to programs like Monmouth because of the chaos. If its hard to break ties and such, give bids to those programs who don't normally make it but think they should, etc....

This year's field is going to test the committee's ability to put merit over politics. I agree with maine612's thoughts. I'm expecting a lower conference team to get a bid over the 6th CAA team.
