Wofford should be ranked in the top 25, but I'm queasy when people rank us higher than 14-15 at the moment

From experience, which is the most trusted and accurate poll?

Still waiting on Sagarin to update preseason rankings.

See, you don't understand...everyone hates every poll except the one that confirms their priors.

But AGS's is pretty good

Like YT said it's all based on your perspective since the FCS polls tend to vary a lot more from poll to poll than the FBS polls do. However, if you go off of what the FCS playoff selection committee does in terms of seeds and at-large selections the AGS poll is the best. The most nationally recognized FCS polls are the STATS FCS poll which is a media poll from writers around the country (their preseason poll is released next Monday) and the FCS Coach's poll whose voting pools consists of 2 coaches (or someone who those coaches designate to fill out their poll ballot each week) from each FCS conference.

I have already had this discussion ad nauseam. If we can't come to some agreement with a foundation process, every poll is worthless.

So, which ones do we, with consensus, agree with?

I hope keeping track of each of the preseason polls should be of value here.

Most of these polls aren't as nervous about this season as I am. Are the Vandals Top 30? Maybe. Playoff worthy? I don't know yet.

This is correct. I barely pay attention to the other polls (and actively run screaming from the Coaches' Poll most of the time).
Historically, the AGS poll is the most accurate in terms of who makes it into the playoffs and who gets seeds (and which seeds they get)...which is really the whole point of things, right?

I don't really care if "Joe's Random Poll" says my Leathernecks are #5 near the end of the season...if the AGS poll says we're #21...we've still got some work to do.

Since a lot of people on here are voters the AGS poll tends to be the one that’s “agreed” with and the rest of the polls exist so they can get posted and ripped to shreds xlolx

That being said the two that are the most recognized are STATS and the coaches poll. The coaches poll is the one that gets mocked the most, because most everyone on here recognizes the absolute lunacy of trying to make coaches know where to rank teams in a conference they never play while preparing for a game during the week. Hell most beat writers don’t have a good grasp on what’s happening in other conferences. The amount of effort most voters put in on here and the level of accountability many are held to when they post their votes here on AGS is generally more than what a voter in a lot of polls are held to in the FCS.

A bunch of excellent posts on this thread but this one raises a major advantage our poll seems ot have. Many voters are willing to take an ass kicking for their selections and post them publicly which means even those that do not take an ass beating and learn something from the donnybrook.

AGS is not the most well known. We are not the big daddy as far as being recognized and publicized.

We are consistently the best and the top performer by any measurable standard.

The other things proceeding that last statement don't mean dick to me.

It is not only of value but I have chastised those that have not brought our competitors efforts to this forum on a Monday morning. I want them all here, every time.xthumbsupx

They don't do rankings until October, but I really like their team pages. For example, here's the JMU page: http://www.atomicfootball.com/archive/teams/tm_153.htmlNoticed their projected records don’t ‘jive’ with their game by game “win probabilities” in many (or most) cases that I looked at. For example, they show Furman as having a greater than 50% win probability in every game, except @ Clemson, which, I would think, would result in a 10-1 projection, but they show the Paladins’ projected record as 7-4. Any insight as to how they cipher those results?

BTW & FWIW - I cross-checked their win probabilities vs. Massey’s and, while similar, they are certainly not the same. So they are using their own algorithms, I would suppose.

Welp...I may have just answered my own question. It works for Furman, at least...If you add up all win probabilities and divide them by 100, you get 7.208, which, I guess, rounds and ‘projects’ to 7 wins. Works for Chattanooga too - favored in only 3 games, but projected to finish 5-6. That doesn’t seem like a sound statistical methodology as each game is an independent event. Probably not sound mathematically either, as I would think you would also divide by 11 games, but they don’t seem to do that. So, in Furman’s case, because they are assigned such a low probability of beating Clemson (0.3%), their projected record, essentially ‘counts’ that projected loss as losing 3 games. Pretty sure it would only count as 1 loss, regardless of the final score.

YoungTerrier, if he reads this, most likely, will provide a dissenting opinion.

Interesting to note the conference ratings: https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/2018/conference/

In particular the Big Sky rated higher than the CAA and the OVC rated higher than the SLC. Doesn't mean a whole lot right now but it's an interesting data point for conversation.

Maybe, y'all can 'splain something to me. I believe I've captured the data correctly, but not 100% sure....I took Sagarin's end of year rankings 2017 and compared them to these current rankings. These 8 Teams are the biggest "Movers Up" and the biggest "Movers Down" between those 2 points in time...

So...I'm curious, what do Portland State, Cal Poly-SLO, Indiana State, and Hampton do so right in the off-season that they jumped 30 spots in his rankings?

And, conversely, what did Dartmouth, San Diego, Rhode Island, and Mercer do so wrong to send them tumbling about 25 spots?

NOTE: I can only 'vouch' for Mercer, but the Bears are returning more of their Players than any Team in the SoCon other than Samford...and they did make a change in their OC to a very exp'd FCS and D2 OC...and filled a couple of open DB Coaching jobs with an FCS DC and a 'youngster'...but those changes are far less than Wofford (Coaches and Players) and WCU (Players) had...and they jumped up 2 and 1 spot, respectively.

Any thoughts? What am I missing here?

Well....to be honest, I do have a theory about the "Mover Up-pers" - PSU and CP-SLO were the tail-draggers of the BSC last season, Indiana State held the same position in the MVFC, and Hampton changed from a Conference with a lower 'perception' (MEAC) to one with a bit better rep (Big South). So, I think those 4 are getting significant 'lift' just from the perception of the strength of the conference they play in...which makes that conference ranked higher...which gives them a boost...kinda self-fulfilling prophesy-like until some games start being played. No?

But, I don't see any kind of pattern with ones that tumbled. What's the deal there?

I don't know about the rest, but with Indiana State playing a bad DII team (Quincy), they should actually win at least one game this year. Nothing that I've seen tells me that they're actually any better as a team this year vs last year though.

Portland State
30
Big Sky

Cal Poly-SLO
29
Big Sky

Indiana State
26
MVFC

Hampton
22
Big South

Dartmouth
-24
Ivy

San Diego
-23
Pioneer

Rhode Island
-23
CAA

Mercer
-22
SoCon

My guess would be that his preseason algorithm factors in the fast few seasons not just last season. So in Indiana St's case they went 0-11 last year but the previous 3 years before that they went 4-7, 5-6, and 8-6. I'm guessing their Sagarin rating was probably also better than their record in relation to most other FCS teams in those years since the MVFC as a whole is looked on very favorably by Sagarin's algorithm. I don't have the energy to look up those other teams but I would guess the trends are similar.

I'm not trying to defend it since anytime there's a computer calculating a rating there's bound to be some head scratchers but usually by mid-October Sagarin's system becomes "well connected" amongst all the teams and previous years have no bearing on it.

FWIW...and, assuming, I’ve captured the data correctly AND done the math correctly...which I am, quite candidly, less than sure of in this case...this is the average change in Sagarin’s Rankings per Team by Conference...from the conclusion of 2017 to right now.

I really don’t know what this all MIGHT mean in the aggregate, but the one thing I do see from this is that Mr. Sagain’s computers sure LOVE whatever the Big Sky Conference Teams did in the off-season...Pretty pleased with the MVFC too, considering that his top 4 MVC Teams only had an average change of +1. His bottom 4 MVFC Teams had an average change of +12.

6.77 Big Sky
4.40 PFL
4.20 MVFC
2.14 Patriot
1.55 SLC
0.17 CAA
-0.11 OVC
-0.11 SoCon
-2.00 Big South
-2.20 SWAC
-4.88 Ivy
-5.14 NEC
-5.20 MEAC

Well, he doesn’t count games vs D-II at all (but shows the W-L), currently all teams’ SOS = 0 (it’s only SOS so far) so who knows his starting algorithm

Sagarin either uses performance from last 3-5 years. MVFC has had some really strong showings vs FBS in the previous years. It's OOC vs the FCS also has been dominant (except some recent Big Sky come back). The computer sees the MVFC similar to a middle G5 conference.

Other conferences can come up by-
- Playing FBS games closer, or winning
- Consistently doing better vs OOC
- Schedule better OOC

Also, they will be well connected after 4-5 games and the initial ratings won't matter anymore. So let's say Mercer starts acting like a top 25 team in the country by mid season it will be rated close to that mark. These ratings are material for fans to use and compare against. The FCS committee doesn't seem to take them into consideration much.

OK...if, as you said, the time frame driving these rankings is as long as 60 months AND, as you said, they are determined by winning games, how does a Team move up/down 30 spots in 7 or 8 months (Jan ‘18 - Aug ‘18) without winning (or losing) ANY games?

I ain’t no matheramaticalatician, but that just doesn’t seem to jive right to me. Does it really make sense to y’all?

NCAA has just dropped RPI for basketball, wonder if they’ll do something similar for football as a factor in postseason selection

Simple, the end of 2017 season rankings were well connected (just for that season). The 2018 rankings are an approximation based upon the last few years. The formula is not disclosed, so as far as we know he could be looking at X amount of things trying to decide how to rank these teams. No mathematician will make a formula with inherent bias against CAA or Big Sky or SoCon. He is just plugging in the numbers. So at worst the model is flawed.

Hate ‘self-quoting’...but I think I got it....

1) Last year’s end of year rankings were very much weighted (almost all, perhaps) by a Teams’ performances in 2017.
2) This year’s beginning of the season rankings pretty much ‘wipe that slate clean’ and start over including the longer view of up to 5 years of historical data...and I would imagine a weighting of that data such that the more recent data (to include 2017) is more heavily weighted than 2016, which is more heavily weight than 2015, and so on.
3) So, when these pre-season rankings come out a Team like Mercer is ‘penalized’ for it’s SoS in 2013 & 2014 when it was I start-up mode & Teams like CP-SLO & Portland State benefit because they had good years in 2016 and further back.

So...I think I get it now. And the lesson for me...is that I ain’t puttin’ much stock at all in Mr. Sagarin’s calculations. Even though they become more relevant as the season progresses, they remain unduly biased by what Teams (and the Teams they play/played) did many yesterday’s prior.

Nope - I’ll stick with what I see, what I know, and what the smart folks here tell me, instead.
