Honestly not a fan of the design, the griffin is fine but the print looks sloppy for my taste

I was wondering when they started using a Griffin. I know that the Tribe name is considered non-PC along with a number of other monikers that they had in the past.

I'd take our postal service logo over that one.

I like the logo, more so without the Griffin but ok with that too. The font is what I like best. It looks like they are bringing back a Native American/Indian tone with it and moving off the fancy pensive that was more British. Another good move from our new AD.

I mean....it's not great.

But it's not bad.

So are you Griffons or Indians?

I'm with IBY on this one. I like it, it seems sort of lateral in not being some big image upgade but these days just not taking a big step back is a win in my opinion.

The text is fine, but looks better fully spelled out rather than the logo (which is a bit too vertical for my taste)

Not a huge fan of the griffin, because I still don't see how "griffin"="tribe" As a griffin logo though it's...fine, I guess?

William and Mary somewhat recently (in the last decade) made that griffin mascot their new physical mascot. It replaced an old green blob that wore a colonial style hat and outfit and had Indian feathers in his cap.
Over the years, William and Mary has voluntarily de-emphasized any Native American imagery they once had in their athletics program. They finally discontinued the WM logo with the feathers on it.

The only Native American reference today is their nickname: the tribe. Frankly surprised that’s still there at this point.

Another fun fact: WM almost picked a Pug as their mascot but somehow they picked the griffin instead. BORING.

They knew we’d never let it down.

Because generic "Tribe" refers to a group of related people. Like the 12 Tribes of Israel. Germanic Tribes, etc. As long as they aren't adding something that can link it to a particular tribe/set of tribes, they are fine.

Warriors would be in the same vein.

Bland yet so busily ornate. Overdone. Just my opinion. Kinda expect an STP decal on the back of the helmet.

It's a little busy for my taste, but "branding" seems to be the in thing now.

I don't quite get the Griffin thing, especially since their in-state rival uses a whole lion as mascot. When I first saw the logo, I though they had gone all Hogwarts on us a picked a dragon as mascot.

More than a new logo, W&M needs a new coach! Talley knew when to hang it up. When is Laycock's turn?

I think he gets to 40 years and is asked to be done or rides off into the sunset. This also could be expedited if the Tribe post another 0 in the conference win column this year.

I don’t think it was voluntary to drop the feathers. If not mistaken, that was forced by the NCAA.

That makes it even stupider. They're feathers. I'm not one to blow about "PC this and PC that" like some want to, but even I acknowledge how eye rolling-ly pointless that is.

Laycock earned the right to leave on his own terms but his contract will expire 1/31/19 so you would expect that the results this year will impact what the new AD Huge decides.

Yes the NCAA in all their academic wisdom had us stop using the "Indians" and with it the feathers went away thou we add obvious feathers on our old "Griffin" but they mostly are gone from the new version. Here is the link for details:

Classic. Though local Tribes supported, since "someone" might be offended, goodbye. Centuries before most schools existed, part of school's mission was education of some of the local Indians.

Waste Management sent them a 'cease and desist' letter.

1693 is actually a cool touch on the FB helmet -- a reference to their founding year; 2nd oldest university in the country after Harvard.

The school is named for a woman who kicked her father off the throne of England. No need to stand on sentiment.
