Any best nickname list that doesn't have the Fighting Camels of Campbell University at the top is null and void in my mind.

Of course in the article they judge them based just on using Camels as their nickname (similar with Delaware just being the Blue Hens) so I guess they may have been skewed by bad data from the start.

EDIT: Also... with two MVFC teams at the top and three in the top 10 their algorithm must be skewed just like Massey's and Sagarin's are. ;)

I find the Blue Hose of Presbyterian to be the best.

So why does ESPN drill it into our heads that its BiZOn, not Bison? Kind of like their fetish for the Fargodome crowd noise. Just something I notice everytime I watch.

FCS nicknames are great. You know whos playing when you get a game between the Jackrabbits and Sycamores.

Yes, do Howard and Bucknell pronounce it Bison, not BiZon?

A Catamount is a "wild cat" but it's not a wildcat, it's the Puma concolor, also known variously as puma, cougar, panther, or mountain lion, weighing over 200 pounds.

How long ago was our AGS nickname championship? I think the Camels, Bluehose, Spiders, and Leathernecks all did well.

I'm guessing it's because they catch hell from BiZon fans when they don't pronounce it right. ;)

Everyone has the right to be wrong. Lipscomb doesn't play football but they actually call themselves the "Bisons".

I'm not sure how Hoyas ranks below any of these. How many other teams are named for a interrogative pronoun?

Elon lost points when they dropped being the Fightin' Christians.

EXACTLY! Expunged them completely from my “Schools I Respect” list and I have vowed to never call them anything other then “Former Fightin’ Former Christians.”

Besides Phoenix is stupid & singular and, to me, carries the connotation that, in their minds, they had to rise from the ashes of being Christians to become whatever singular fake bird that they imagine themselves to be now.

I'm pretty sure that Howard and Bucknell pronounce Bison with an "s" sound. I also see it the plural form as "bisons" especially when associated with Bucknell - that's just plain wrong. :)

The University of Manitoba call themselves the "Bisons" - they pronounce it with a "z".

Did a little web searching to see (as a clip from up there and the guy was definitely saying "bizons".) Also found this discussion: https://wordsmith.org/board/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=24151

Ha! I was thinking the exact opposite. ESPN guys do their research and pronounce it right (with a "z"). What they are trying to do is let people know that they are purposely saying it with a "z", possibly to avoid snarky comments on social media and whatnot.

Idk.... I seem to recall a lot of Bye-sun pronunciations from the ESPN guys in the mid-2000s when they beat Minnesota in football and Wisconsin and Marquette is basketball. Even when College Gameday made their first appearance in the fall of 2013 they were trying to catch themselves if the missed the "z" and even did a short feature on it IIRC.

Edit: Here is it (it was just part of a larger feature by Tom Rinaldi): https://youtu.be/UV4YRL5d-98?t=57m38s

"more unique"....well, kinda depends on how you want to count things.
I mean, there's a good number of schools who have completely unique nicknames...nobody else are Vandals, Blue Hose, or Leathernecks, for example. You can't really get more unique than having literally only one school using it.

ISUr Redbirds .. 8th place in MVFC .!!!

so this dude really needs to keep his day job .. some conferences he ranks the same nickname at top and others at bottom. Then he rips many teams for having too ordinary or common nicknames, only to rip my beloved ISUr Redbirds for having not just using same Cardinal nickname as 100's of other teams have done.

And how are we behind Penguins (this bird don't even frickin fly !!!) or Sycamores (they just stand there the whole time !!).

Plus the fact that he doesn't even know a Redbird is an actual kind of bird .. just ask Merriam-Webster !!!

Definition of redbird: any of several birds (such as a cardinal or scarlet tanager) with predominantly red plumage

I'll await his apology and retraction .. next year I'm expecting top 4 in MVFC !!!

ok so I may have over-reacted a tad bit .. in fact, my mind is opening to his suggestion .. with a slight twist. I'm going to propose to our Board of Regents that we change our nickname to the ISU Scarlet Tanagers .. if that doesn't move us to top of this guys list, nothing will.

This here poll is bassackwards. Simple and clean is the best way to go. Year in and year out Bama's uniform is always recognized as best due to its simplicity and lack of fancy foofru. The only way it could be improved is to change colors to purple and gold. A nickname should be simple and clean. Something along the lines of....hmm.."Lions"! Only five letters and everyone knows it stands for the King of the Jungle.

Never did get a solid answer. It was unique. If they were worried about sexism, just shorten it to the Flying Dutch. Syracuse shortened Orangemen to Orange.

The LA Times said that they went from a colorful name to a meaningful one.

Surprised it's not the only one in all divisions. The lower division school in Memphis spells it differently though.

I worked with a fellow a while back that said he was a Saluki and yes, I had to ask what in the world was a Saluki? Upon his explanation I told him I was a Lion. No explanation needed.

How UNI got the name Panthers is half interesting, but it's a rather generic name in the grand scheme of things. I prefer what we were, unofficially, known for prior to that - THE Iowa State Teachers College Pedagogues.

In GA, my favorite is the Cairo HS Syrupmakers / Syrupmaids...helps to understand that the town of Cairo, GA is pronounced as Kay-Ro...y’know, as in Karo http://www.karosyrup.com/ - Of further interest, the mascot was chosen because Roddenberry’s Syrup was located in Cairo, GA. Roddenberry’s is not affiliated with Karo Syrup in any way & actually is cane syrup vs. Karo’s being corn syrup. Makes perfect sense...in South/Middle GA.

Also...Fairly nearby town of Vienna, GA is pronounced as Vy-enna & fairly nearby county of Houston is pronounced as How-ston...”In Middle & South Georgia, we may not be able to think up new names for our locations, but we dang sure ain’t gonna pronounce ‘em the way y’all do!” ...but I digress.

Runner-up in GA - Solomon Charles Johnson HS Atom Smashers...located adjacent to Savannah State University; so FCS-related...this season.

How UNI got the name Panthers is half interesting, but it's a rather generic name in the grand scheme of things. I prefer what we were, unofficially, known for prior to that - THE Iowa State Teachers College Pedagogues. Before renaming itself the State University of New York at Albany with the Great Dane mascot, the New York State College for Teachers teams were also known as the Peds, with a mascot named Pedwin

I was disappointed when D-III Skidmore College in Saratoga dropped the Wombat in favor of the blander Thoroughbreds. Their Ultimate Frisbee teams still use the Wombat

...who are the Trojans (not everyone knows that - after all, they are a G5 Slurry Belt (right?) Team, so not widely recognized outside of Pike County, AL.

I, on the other hand, clearly remember their final meeting in 2001, when Troy prevailed 21-3. The Trojans sure capped it off & shut down the Cocks’ Offensive production that day!

Now if y'all want a really good laugh, look up the mascot for the Rhode Island School of Design. Just don't do it at work.

For a work-safe description from Wikipedia...

RISD has teams in two sports, hockey and basketball. As might be considered befitting for an arts school, the symbolism used for the teams is unique. The hockey team is called the "Nads", and their cheer is "Go Nads!"[20] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island_School_of_Design#cite_note-20) The logo for the Nads features a horizontal hockey stick with two non-descript circles at the end of the stick's handle.
The basketball team is known simply as the "Balls", and their slogan is, "When the heat is on, the Balls stick together."[21] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island_School_of_Design#cite_note-21) [22] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island_School_of_Design#cite_note-22) The Balls' logo consists of two balls next to one another in an irregularly shaped net.[23] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island_School_of_Design#cite_note-23)
Lest the sexual message of these teams and logos be lost, the 2001 creation of the school mascot, Scrotie, ended any ambiguity. Despite the name, Scrotie is not merely a representation of a scrotum, but is a 7-foot tall penis,[24] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island_School_of_Design#cite_note-24) with scrotum and testes at the bottom. RISD has stated that Scrotie is only an "unofficial" mascot, yet Scrotie is featured prominently on the school's official website.[25] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island_School_of_Design#cite_note-25) In 2016, the school reported that the 2009 incarnation of the mascot had been deemed not appropriate for younger fans, and so the mascot would return to its earlier, "more cartoonish" appearance.[26] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island_School_of_Design#cite_note-26)

We used to have to play Pekin HS during my HS years - last 10 years or so before they changed their name, none of the jersey had Chinks on it.

The town got it's name when the founders couldn't come up with a name all agreed on. They decided to spin a globe, and have one of the wives stick a pin in it - it landed in China. The pin obscured the g, and all they could read was "Pekin" instead of Peking.

Something like that. Blah blah blah. Long story in 1920 some 8th grader won a contest to name the year book. She submitted Orab as a shortened orange and black

A 10th grader that did the sports write ups for the football team liked it and used it to describe the football team and it stuck.

Sheldon still had that original year book and a bunch of other stuff preserved in the high school on display.
