Folks have been saying how CSU will be down this coming season losing Drafts and Price, but I got to looking and they are actually looking a little better than last year to me overall. They return 7 offensive starters including the entire line and 9 defensive starters that include 3 all Big South conference players.

What do your teams returning starters look like.

17 starters back. 9 on Offense, 8 on Defense.

JD Quinn will take the only O-Line starting position not returning. Center. We return 9 of 10 of our O-Line two deep.

QB Cole Bergquist started 9 games in 2005 and 1 in 2006 and will be back at QB. So basically we have 11 back on Offense with starting experience.

Lex Hilliard is back. We are 4 deep at RB. All with starting experience.

Both kickers back. Kickoff returners back.

I appreciate your optimism, but Drafts was too good of a player for us not to miss him. His amazing scrambling and clutch throwing ability pulled us through some close games this season. It is going to be hard to replace him.....at least right away.

Do you think Bryant will be the odds on favorite to win the starting spot or do you think one of the 3 young bucs will challenge him?

I hear Bryant is performing well in workouts and throwing good in 7 on 7 in the afternoons....he'll probably get the nod.

Eli Byrd replaced Sidney Bryant as the back up QB during the 2nd half of the season last year.

It is Eli's possition to loose.

You had 20 seniors and only 5 were starters? That seems fishy. We had 9 seniors and 5 were starters.

According to GoASU.com we have seven returning starters on offense, six on defense, and 4 specialists.

IIRC, We lose WR Mayfield, TE Bettis, OT Isenhour, and OL Robertson on offense.

On defense we lose SS Jeremy Wiggins, DE Marques Murrell, DT Omarr Byrom, DT Daniel Orlebar, and I actually can't remember the other. Cam Speer maybe? Hopefully someone can correct me.

Oh, I thought we were just counting the 22 Offense and Defense returners. If you want to count specialists, Montana has 21 starters back, plus JD Quinn, and 2005 starters Lex Hilliard and Cole Bergquist.

Monte Smith is the other senior, Speer started the season (as a junior), but Jacque Roman ended up starting as a freshman.....probably a better LB anyway

Might be the best Linebacking core in FCS.

QB: (return all passes from last year)
Rolovich (SR) 113-228 49.6% 1674 yards 10 TD 10 INT (started most of season including playoffs)
Carpenter (SR) 110-177 62.1% 1218 yards 6 TD 8 INT (started @ CU and next 4 games)
RB: (return entire backfield)
Mason (SO) 153 carries 645 yards 9 TD (true freshman, didn't start until 5th game of the season - did not play 3 games and started 6)
Taito (JR) 83 carries 340 yards (started after Groves went down at CU, never made a big impact - played sparingly after replaced by Mason)
Groves (JR) 67 carries 210 yards 1 TD (came on as a freshman 2 years ago, spent much of last season injured - torn PCL - if healthy, potential starter)
WR: (lose a LOT)
Lewis (SR) 25 rec 411 yards 1 TD (injured for a few games)
Toliver (JR) 10 rec 126 yards 1 TD (injured as well, 4th string anyway)
Lulay (JR) 7 rec 119 yards
TE: (everybody back)
Bostick (JR)
Barnhart (SR)
Schreibeis (SO)
McDonald (SR)
OL: (lose a couple good ones, but return a lot of experience)
Saucedo (JR)
Hansen (SO)
Jensen (SR)
DeCock (SR)

Can't get any stats for defense, website takes me to bball stats. xidiotx

DT: (lose some good ones)
Papich (SR) (injured some of the year, been a 3 year starter)
Kolone (JR) (one of the anchors of this defense)
Hoffenbacker (SO) (played well (but sparingly) as a greyshirt freshman, BIG boy 6-2 310 as a freshman)
Kinkelaar (JR) (played sparingly as a SO, should be potential starter next year)
DE: (lose Lowe, one of the greats)
Bobo (SR) (solid first year)
Perhaps a DT will move over to help out
LB: (again, lose Lowe, but eveyone else returns)
Daly (JR) (continues tradition of great Montana LBs at MSU)
Claggett (SR) (had a solid year)
King (SR) (one of the leaders, and fastest guys on the field)
Matthews (SR) (good first year from JC)
CB: (lose our best cover corner)
Austin (SR) (great cover CB)
Beach (SR) (made some big plays last year)
S: (biggest loss, IMO, with Force and LeBlanc)
Retoriano (played sparingly when LeBlanc and Force were injured)
Brown (same)

Biggest concerns:
1. S
2. CB
3. WR

The Cats brought in some transfer help to fill in immediate holes, and we have a lot of younger players waiting in the folds. I am pretty excited about next year - I want another home playoff game!

Furman returns the entire offensive backfield and 4/5 of the o-line (depending on some inevitable shifting). WR corps returns all but one.

Defense returns two starting on the line, all linebackers, all defensive backs except one safety. Both specialist.

Significant losses: WR Justin Stepp (also one of the better kick returners in conference), DE Roy Ravenell, DT Wes Bray, FS Jeremy Blocker, OT John Kivett. That's about it....

Or, more simply... the J-Train is back. Look for over 30 TDs if he stays healthy.

Hey catbob:
I had the same problem at MSU site.:bang:
here is the link at NCAA for defensive stats MSU:
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2006/Internet/ranking_summary/2006000000440tackles.html

But, their roster is incomplete. In return can you tell me how
many games played or started in 06 by your departing O-linemen?
Thanks, Keeper.

catbob
February 27th, 2007, 02:45 AM
T Joe Hirst 6'7 292 Started all games the last two years, had a tryout with the Seahawks, never made the squad.
C Brant Birkeland 6'? (our website is awesome, says 6'21) 270 I believe he started most games this year, then may have been moved around on the line. Started 10 of 11 last year.

Both were experienced vets and will be missed, but we have some good youngins.

Thanks catbob.

The NCAA stats page is the only one I can find listing number of
games played by offensive linemen. Anyone out there know of
others or even number of starts ???

POS ## OFFENSE
OT 65 Davis Gone
OG 63 Eason
OC 62 Lemn
OG 50 Parham Gone
OT 60 Apted
QB 11 Rascati Gone (Landers is experienced back up, big running threat)
FB 39 Patrick Gone
TB 14 Holloman
TE 43 M. Brown
TE 44 Newman
WR 8 Bransford Gone (will be replaced with better player anyway...)
K 42 Rabil Gone

POS ## DEFENSE
DE 45 Winston Gone
DT 90 Baranowsky
DT 70 Suppon Gone
DE 99 Abdul-Wahid
LB 23 Jordan Gone
LB 2 Dottin-Carter
WS 34 Haywood
SS 6 N. Adams
CB 5 Minafield Gone
CB 19 McGee
FS 21 LeZotte
P 40 Pritchard

We return 6 started on O and 7 starters on D; 1 of 2 PKs

The loss of Rascati and Jordan will be big, but losing OT Davis might hurt the most. I think we'll bring in a xfer on the OL, DL has some good recruits that should step it up. Also, our Secondary should be much more experienced (big weakness as exploited by YSU in the playoffs).

Overall, I expect JMU to be about the same, but look a little different. Less passing  if you can believe it. Landers will be called on more option plays. The Off might look more like App St. did this year.

Defensively, less sacks, but more turnovers, INTs especially. A large amount of games will be won/lost on how well Landers adapts to being the starter, and how well the coaches adapt the game planning around his abilities. Should be an interesting year. This year will really tell what the 2004 NC did for our recruiting and how well those recruits play out in the field of battle.

I expect an 8-3 year. Doubt it would be worse than 7-4, and it will be very tough to crank out a 9-2 record with away games at UNC and Delaware (most likely losses IMO). And for the record, another away game to start the playoffs, probably at YSU again looking at their schedule (so many home games!) :smiley_wi

Why did Mole transfer? Don't you lose a year? He had a good freshman season, spent most of his sophmore season injured, did he lose his junior season?

wouldn't you want to transfer from Sac to Cal Poly? From perennial loser to on the cuff of playoffs? Cal Poly could be a big threat come playoff time, if they don't get beat up too much in conference play.

Yea but how much time are you going to get behind Noble? Plus you lose one year; I guess 1 year splitting time at Poly is better than 2 years starting at Sac.
