View Full Version : Last Time your Fans Rushed the Field?

Was talking with a co-worker yesterday about all the craziness and the fines that Vanderbilt is facing due to the fans rushing the court in their basketball game against Florida...

So, thought about posing this question to the FCS masses..."when was the last time your program of choice's fan base has rushed the field following an FCS game?"

Let me hear from you...pictures would be great!

'05 against Furman. I think that was the best game of college football I have ever seen.

There is a video highlights of the game on the board now, actually.

I believe the 04 semifinal against Sam Houston, it wasnt really a rush more a straight aim for the goalposts. I had pictures on my old cellphone but it died and i never got those pics back: smh :

Are you kidding we have Dome Nazi's. They threaten to mace the students if they rush the field! That's a quote from this years GWFC championship game over SDSU.

The last time I remember rushing a field was when we won in Montana and I just happened to be there pulling cords for the coaches. Before that you have to go back to McAllen, TX in 1983.

I'm beginning to wonder if playing indoors is so great after all.

For Yale fans, it was November 11, 2006 at Harvard Stadium. Yale had clinched a share of the Ivy title with the win at Harvard:

Yale fans rush the field (http://www-us.flickr.com/photos/sporter/301282966/in/set-1793767/)

In fact it's a yearly tradition where the fans of the winning team rush the field at the conclusion of THE GAME. It doesn't matter what the records are or if the game has title implications and it doesn't matter which stadium the game is being played at. The winning fans will rush the field. I've seen Yale fans charge the field after 3-7 Yale beat 2-8 Harvard and celebrate on the field like they just won the National Championship.

Last time the students rushed the field was after beating FAU in the Semis in 2003.

Yes, the game was in Florida. After watching it on ESPN, the students went from downtown to the football field, and tore down the second goalpost. The first had come down the week before when we beat Western Illinois at home in a blizzard. Afterward, the AD apparently remarked "We've been looking to buy new ones anyway. And they only come in pairs."

Since I've been at UNI, 2004, we haven't rushed the field yet.

Then again, it's not the easiest at the UNI-Dome. The field is below the stands a little. So you would have to jump a ways.

I almost broke my leg jumping from the stands when APP won their first championship............. man that was a jump:eek: and they had plywood laid out at the bottom so there was no give.:bang:

2002 Regular Season Finale againsst JMU to clinch the A-10 Title (We tied with Maine, but I think we won the autobid).

We were so far ahead of JMU at the half we carried cases of champagne into the stands at halftime and started popping corks with about 2-3 minutes to go in the game. There were 2 times that the students rushed the field since Ive been at Liberty...

2003- We beat VMI 31-28. VMI was up 28-3 going into the 4th quarter and Eugene Goodman scored 4 touchdowns, and Dre Barnes scored the clinching 2 point conversion with 10 seconds left. That game kicked off a stretch of 5 wins in the last 7 games (including 4 in a row). We would have rushed the field after beating Hofstra in overtime but that game was the day after most of the kids went home for Thanksgiving break.

2006- Beating Charleston Southern 34-20. It was the final home game and with all the success that Coach Rocco had this year, the students sent him off into 2007 with a bang (we would beat VMI the next week to lock up a winning season and one of the top turnarounds in the FCS)

Furman fans are notoriously pretty laid back at sporting events. The last two times were after beating App. State in '05 and Georgia Southern on homecoming in '04 (the best game I'VE seen, 7wbn :))

My laptop has a great picture of the students rushing the field after the App win. This is typically the one that gets passed around from the win over Southern.

GSU fans, have y'all brought down the goal posts anytime recently? At Furman no one really bothers with it, but at ASU they will tear them down if someone has a really good fart or something.

Last year's win over Lehigh but in 2003 when the goalposts were ripped down was my favorite. The school fined the guys that climbed the posts so the kids set up a collection table in the student center to raise the fine. Priceless!!!

Sometimes I think you're right, there.

I personally think that ASU fans no longer have any reason to tear down goalposts. The only distantly conceivable option is after a third title in Chattanooga, and tearing down posts up there is understandably off limits.

'Mild' rushes are still understandable on occasion, though. And the occasions aren't as frequent, I believe, with ASU's recent success. In 2002 and 2004, I rushed the field after ASU-Furman games. In 2006, I just shook my head and walked away.

I'm not sure what the deal is in Chattanooga - the intercom says 'nobody on the field,' but they open the gates that let people walk down a set of stairs to the turf. Of course, by that time a lot of people had already jumped down. There were mothers with young children - there were elderly people - down there.

The craziest at ASU was after the braves rallied to beat the pirates in the playoffs either in 1991 or 1992 (my freshman and sophomore years). I believe it was when they came back from 3 down in the 9th (the Sid Bream slide to win), so that would have been October 1992.

Anyway, after the game people were fired up and a large group of people ended up congregating on King St. A guy was playing a trumpet or something and the group grew as everyone marched across campus to the football field. The stadium was open, so the mob at that point tore down the near goalpost. The group was huge by the time it reached the stadium.

I couldnt understand why everyone in Boone was so excited but I assume the underdog story and the Southern pride thing had something to do with it. I would say most fans in NC grew up Braves fans.

I was there and sad to say part of the mob, but please someone who was there in 1991 - 1992 verify this so I can make sure it wasnt a weird dream.

I have heard that story from several people.

If I had my choice between

(A) being associated with a non-Atlanta-area university whose students celebrated an Atlanta Braves win in the LCS (a baseball game) by tearing down goalposts in their own football stadium.

or

(B) being associated with a university that routinely produces videos like 'Hot Hot Hot.'

I'm pretty sure I'd go with B.

I wish it were a dream. I was part of that mob and having fun until someone decided we should tear down the goalposts. If my car wasn't parked in State Farm, I might have left that night for good. Nobody tears down goalposts for baseball. Especially some major league team not affilliated whth the school. xidiotx

I'm glad I stuck around, and we smarted up. I celebrated the Braves' World Series victory at a party, and no mob was formed. :hurray:

Montana kinda has the same thing now too. After every big game they say fans are not allowed on the field till after the visiting team leaves. But if there was a real big occasion, there would be nothing to stop us as we rushed.

The ONLY time I ever recall UD fans rushing the field at the Tub: 2003 Semifinals over Wofford. The fans didn't even know how to do it, they went prematurely and gave Wofford a first down and a subsequent TD. :o

BTW, I did not rush the field. I just stood in the stands enjoying the site.

Unfortunately, the cops were a little aggressive that night and I remember seeing them carry this guy hogtied out of the stadium. They actually had the county mounties on hand and lined the endzone in front of the student section so the students couldn't get to the posts... so they ran past the horses and got the other endzone. xlolx

Been apart of both App's semifinal and finals field rushings. My favorite by far was the Furman one.....basically because I didn't think we were going to win until we won.

Both goalpost were down literally 15 seconds after the game was over. Before I even got to jump on one of them. (the second goalpost we left on the field.)

They were discussing it last week on ESPN radio when talking about whether or not Kentucky fans should rush the court if they beat then #1 Florida.

Many think that for the storied programs you take a "been there done that approach." I am of the impression that GSU goes that route. Why, after 6 national championships, would you bring down the pipes? Furman, conversely, just doesn't care that much.

I think ASU is at the point, after two NCs, where tearing down the goalpost just shouldn't happen anymore. That is for big upsets on your homefield and, reality is, when ASU wins now, it isn't an upset. Furman in '02, Furman in '04, and the '05 semis were all, IMO, upsets. Not so post 2006.

At Nicholls State, the fans are allowed on the field after the games are completed. That being said...they "stormed" the field after the 2005 game against McNeese State which clinched a tie for the Southland Conference title as well as the auto-bid by virtue of a head-to-head win over Texas State.

And when I say "stormed" the field, I mean they celebrated with the team at mid-field.

For a long time fans were allowed to walk around on the field at Mumford after games. They tried to take the goal posts down in '93 after we beat Steve McNair and the Alcorn St. Braves to clinch our first SWAC title in years. Of course we lost homecoming the next week to Nicholls State. And in 2001 we stormed the field in Tallahassee after beating FAMU for the first time in 4 years to end the series.xlolx xlolx xlolx

Are you kidding we have Dome Nazi's. They threaten to mace the students if they rush the field! That's a quote from this years GWFC championship game over SDSU.

The last time I remember rushing a field was when we won in Montana and I just happened to be there pulling cords for the coaches. :nono: Before that you have to go back to McAllen, TX in 1983. :nono:

I'm beginning to wonder if playing indoors is so great after all.

Ah Ah Ah. :nono: The last game I remember rushing the field that I remember before the Montana game, was the 1997 31-10 win at und (University of North Dakota - not to be confused with "UND" - the University of Notre Dame). It was Bob Babich's first year coaching (recently promoted to the D-Coordinator position with the Bears). If I remember correctly it was a fairly close game until the second half, when Bob decided to start the second half with an on-side kick that we recovered! Thus beginning the "Bob's Got Balls" chant.

und tight end Jimmy Kleinsasser posed a some problems, but we eventually emerged victorious, returning "The Nickle Trophy" to its rightful home in Fargo. And the fans rejoiced and stormed the field. Destroying the decrepit decaying wooden bleachers at the former und stadium resulting in und building an indoor practice facility with bleachers, where the sioux currently play football.

That was a fun day.

Probably in 2004 when the Kats upset the #1 Griz in Huntsville.

Furman fans are notoriously pretty laid back at sporting events. The last two times were after beating App. State in '05 and Georgia Southern on homecoming in '04 (the best game I'VE seen, 7wbn :))

Yup. Furman scores on a Felton run with just over a minute. Chaz Williams passes the Eagles all the way down the field to have the ball batted down in the endzone as time expired. The question is, why did Mike Sewak leave a timeout in his pocket?

What I loved was that the NCC police had the mounted cops on some of the biggest draft horses I have ever seen, lined up in front of the South End Zone to stop the students from rushing the field. All of the field rushers avoided the mounted cops and attacked the North End Zone Goal Post. Funny as all get out!!!!:hurray: :hurray:

Yeah the dummies gave Wofford another 7 points but it was still funny to watch and the 2003 still gave up fewer points than any other NC team.

Wofford fans like to use this game as proof that they were the 2nd best team of that year. In truth there was no way Wofford would have ever scored a TD against this team without the fans' assisstance and the 2nd team defense.
