View Full Version : Your Team's #1 recruit

So, everyone's finishing up their recruiting classes and stuff, but I'm interested to see who everyone thinks their top recruit is? Who's going to be your next great All-American or maybe your conference's freshman of the year next season? Just one...which one player is going to have the biggest impact right away or relatively quickly?

I'll start....

WR Broc Thompson, Ben Davis HS (Indianapolis, IN)
6'2", 173

Broc Thompson is the son of former MLB outfielder Ryan Thompson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Thompson_%28baseball%29) and the younger brother of former Ohio State and current NBA G-League center Trevor Thompson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trevor_Thompson_%28basketball%29).

This kid looks exceptionally talented (great route runner, really fights for the ball) and only got passed over by some of the "big boys" because he's not huge. Had a few G5 offers (Utah State, Ball State, late offer from Memphis), originally committed to Ball State, but when he didn't sign early with them, things got a bit "weird" and we were able to swoop in and get him. The #1 receiver (setting most of the school receiving records) at the #1 school in Indiana that plays in one of the toughest conferences in the country (http://www.maxpreps.com/news/s-dztGFk80 ... r-2016.htm (http://www.maxpreps.com/news/s-dztGFk80-ZPybqa-cd_w/americas-top-10-toughest-high-school-football-leagues-for-2016.htm)). Ben Davis HS won the 6A (top level) state championship game this year, 63-14...in a game where Broc Thompson caught for 109 yards and 3 TDs on 5 catches: http://www.ihsaa.org/Portals/0/boys%20s ... 0FINAL.pdf (http://www.ihsaa.org/Portals/0/boys%20sports/boys%20football/2017-18/6A%20FINAL.pdf)
Ben Davis HS is ranked by MaxPreps and USA Today as one of the top HS football teams in the country this last year (MaxPreps Xcellent 25 - ranked #6, USA Today #8)

Here's some more info on him: http://www.thejaygravesreport.com/its-o ... s-genuine/

It's hard to say for A&T, IMHO.

Our impact players next season will be on the defensive side of the ball.

This kid will is the likely replacement for our Defensive MVP Jeremy Taylor:

Zareik Rush, OLB, 6-2, 205, Greensboro, NC (Dudley HS)
We were able to get this kid from Howard and some FBS/P-5 looks. He was a 2-way player (RB/OLB) for Dudley High School (Greensboro, NC) and I expect him to play our coveted rover position and look like a Cam Chancellor/Keanu Neal clone. He has the physical tools to start as a true freshman, but we'll see in 6 months.

As far as our transfers, this kid from N. Illinois should help us have the best FCS D Line arguably in 2018:

Justin Nwachukwu, DL, 6-1, 290, Wake Forest, NC (Northern Illinois Transfer/Heritage HS)

Justin has the chance to start as our 3-tech DL next to Julian McKnight. We already are one of the best at stopping the run, but if Justin can live up to his potential, ECU and/or Jacksonville State will have a really hard time running the ball on us.

I might be cheating since he’s a transfer, but I’m going RB Billy Ray McCrary III who transfers to ACU from Cal. He’s 5’10 190 and has got 4.3 speed and will be a fantastic change of pace back to Tracy James who is 5’11 220.

The one that studies hard, and embraces the system and coaches methods, keeps his nose clean, embraces the cadet life, and is a team player. Could be any one of them. It could be the fastest, or strongest, or biggest player, but may not be.

Cagan Campbell
Cornerback • 5-11 • 165 • Tuscaloosa, Ala. • Hillcrest HS
A three-star recruit by 247Sports, who also lists him as the No. 26 player in the state of Alabama and the No. 71cornerback in the class of 2018…a two-star recruit by Rivals.com…played for head coach Sam Adams at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa…a second-team all-state athlete by the Alabama Sports Writers Association in 2017, when he recorded 67 solo tackles, four interceptions and nine pass breakups…also ran track for the Patriots, claiming three state titles and running what was at one time the fastest time in the country in the 400 indoors at 47.64 seconds…chose JSU out of 17 offers that include New Mexico, UMass, Wofford, Army, The Citadel, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Liberty, South Alabama, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin.

Hero Sports has him rated the #5 recruit in FCS.

RB: Jae'lon Oglesby 5-11; 175 Central, South Carolina (D.W. Daniel) (Jr.) **** #1 APB; #2 State; (247sports) #7 RB (Rivals)

Signed with Clemson in 2013, but did not qualify, went to prep school for a year and then signed with Memphis in Jan. 2015. Got into some trouble his freshman year and left team, got his life together including his grades in JUCO, and now ready to get back to football.

On paper? Might be Mateo Jackson, a 6'2"/220 LB out of Richmond, VA.

The '18 signee that might HAVE to perform early is Que Reid, a safety out of North Carolina. Lot to replace with the 2 AAs graduating.

ElCid and McNeese72 both have an outstanding perspective on this question.

By my count, Dartmouth had a school-record commits with FBS offers (and not all from the military academies) this season.

The only guy with a BCS offer was offensive lineman Calvin Atkeson. So he's my nominee.

For Kennesaw State, it would have to be Markeith Montgomery. Elite level talent. The bigger schools worried about his size, but he was still able to get a few FBS scholarship offers from Coastal Carolina, Central Michigan, Army, Navy, Airforce, and Florida Atlantic. He probably will start right away for us or at least get some good minutes.

Too early to say. Our most impactful recruits in 2017 weren't signed until well after signing day (Marcus Cooper, Juwan Petit-Frere). That said, our recruiting coordinator loves Dante Carter (DT), Joshua Carr (LB), and Donniel Ward-Magee, and we have an FBS transfer QB (Chason Virgil, Fresno State) with 14 career starts under his belt ... we'll see who emerges.

I hope Furman's #1 recruit from this class doesn't have to play a down next season… that in itself would be a huge win.

My gut tells me… Hamp Sisson
6-0 185 QB from Mountain Brook, AL

Completed 321-of-485 passes for 5,845 yards and 43 touchdowns in his career...serving as a team captain, fashioned a stellar 2017 season, passing for 2,451 yards and 18 TDs, completing 131-of-198 passes (66.1%) in helping his squad to an 8-4 record and quarterfinal appearance in state playoffs...connected on 17 of 21 passes for 352 yards and two touchdowns and accounted for four touchdowns in all in a 51-50 win over rival Spain Park, completing the game winning two-point conversion pass to seal the verdict...named the Birmingham All-Over the Mountain Team and All-Over The Mountain Co-MVP in 2017...honorable mention al.com and AFCA 7A All-State selection.

http://www.hudl.com/video/3/4310270/59aedf6a4ba8730e3023baa2

Player not to sleep on… Devin Abrams
6-1 205 RB from Pensacola, FL

Ran for over 1,500 yards his senior year in helping lead West Florida to to a 12-2 record and region and district championships...played on three district title squads....selected to play for the West Team in the Pensacola Sports Association in the Subway High School All-Star Series.

Not much noise about Abrams but his film is impressive against top-knotch Florida talent.

Redbird 4th & short
February 8th, 2018, 08:37 PM
Illinois State Redbirds ... Had 33 total signees, 4 are Juco or FBS transfers. Pulled this off despite turning over 4 coaches on offense and 2 coaches on defense including both Coordinators.

Got two guys we like a lot ...

DB Michael Gardner, Safety, 5'11" 180 lbs from DeSoto, TX, 3 star ... "Offers have already rolled in from Indiana, Nevada, Illinois State, and Fresno State with teams like Baylor, Texas State, and Oklahoma State showing interest."

https://www.hudl.com/video/3/6542349/57e51dfaed57ee46d85f0252

C/G Peter Bussone, 6'2", 285 lb ... but reportedly up to 305 lb since season, from our hometown of Normal, 2 star only, but really looks like an under the radar guy. Spack already thinking about moving him to DT. Very big, strong, no baby fat, good burst, high motor, finishes every play, and a mean streak. Note he plays in Illinois Class 7a, where 8a is largest. He's pancaking people on nearly every block.

Lafayette is climbing out of a huge hole so everything looks good at this point. Perhaps the following three are the pick of the litter:

Troy Fisher, 6'3" 215 QB from Pittsburgh Central Catholic, the school that produced Dan Marino and Marc Bulger. Some feel that Fisher will be the starter for 2018 and beyond.

Malik Hamm, 6'3" 240 DE from Baltimore City College High School

TayJon Martin, 5'11" 175 CB from Episcopal (Texas) High School

There use to be a direct pipeline from FUMA to VMI, wonder what shut that one down? Shuman is still the head guy at FUMA, and he is a VMI grad. His son ended up at VT, but I doubt that had anything to do with it...he was one of the top ranked guards in the country, so he wasn't going to VMI...still wondering what happened there?

Even though he's 6' and nearly 200lbs, he's listed with sprinter speed. You watch his film, and he is impressive both in coverage and against the run. He takes off and sheds blockers and has the speed to cover a lot of ground quickly. That versatility, size, and speed is going to make him a tough hombre in a 3-4 scheme. He's fast enough to play safety and big enough to tangle up on the line of scrimmage.

For UNH I would say:

Dylan Laube (Westhampton, N.Y.) is a 5-11, 190-pound running back/defensive back who had an outstanding career at Westhampton Beach High School. In his senior season, Laube led Westhampton to a 12-0 record and the school's first Long Island Class III championship by scoring a Long Island-record 47 touchdowns and rushing for a school-record 2,680 yards on 249 carries. In the Long Island Class III championship game, he rushed for 227 yards and school-record six touchdowns. Laube's career numbers included 101 rushing TDs and 6,495 rushing yards on 687 carries; he caught 64 passes for 1,234 yards and another 14 touchdowns, and also returned five kickoffs for touchdowns. Laube was co-winner of the prestigious Carl A. Hansen Award, given to the top football player on Long Island (along with 4-Star Ohio State bound TE Jeremy Rucker). He was selected a member of the USA Today ALL-USA New York Football Team, was picked to play in the Empire Challenge All-Star Game, and was a Newsday All-Long Island selection. Laube is also a member of the Westhampton varsity lacrosse team.

If you are counting that is 120 TD's total...............

Not to nitpick, but Williams had some of the nation's top recruits on that defensive line. Chauncey Rivers, for instance, was one of the top DE recruits in the country in 2015.

I'm sure Williams is a good coach, but its not like he cobbled together a defensive line full of scrappy players running on grit and want to. He had top flight collegiate players who struggled to get their head on straight.

For SDSU I'm not sure.
I'll go with J'Bore Gibbs a 6-3, 205 lbs QB from Chicago.
Also 2 brothers from Madison, Jadon and Jaxon Janke could make some noise in the future, had insane high school careers. I think Jaxon made ESPN for a catch last year.

Riko Jones 6-4 205

Scout.com Ranking: #261 overall prospect/ #41 WR
Scout.com live evaluation: Not many new Jeriko's name going
into the recruiting season but that all changed when Scout released its latest
rankings and he made the National 300 member list. Jeriko is a tall and rangy
player who rushed the ball 106 times for 623 yards and caught 31 passes for
689 yards. He is still raw and does lack break away speed but shows very good
athleticism and has good ball skills. The position he will play on the next
level is left to be determined but most project him at receiver. (http://nebraska.scout.com/)

Morris began receiving offers in 2014. He was pursued by South Carolina, Southern Miss, LSU, Nebraska and Mississippi State before committing to Southern Miss. Before he could sign, there was a coaching change that he was unhappy with. He ended up at Jones JC. He could be a major weapon.

Never easy to pick a #1. Biggest hype for the Tribe could be Colby Sorsdal, 6'6" 295 OL from Mt. Lebanon H.S. in Pittsburgh. 15 offers including 5 MAC as well as UCF and UConn.

Small class for W&M with only 8 scholarship players. PWO's are a good group of 13 with major sleeper in Aiden Cain, 6' 175 WR also from Mt. Lebanon. Missed soph. and Jr. years with ACL tears and exploded in 2017 with 101 receptions for 1,750 yards. 3 offers and PWO from Pitt and W&M.
