Hmmmm. How'd we have the best defense in the conference with no players????? One on the first team and just one on the second team?

Good for Hildebrand. He was consistent and dynamic. I would replace Davion Davis with Nathan Stewart for Offensive Player of the Year. Other than that, it was good. Some of our freshman DBs will be on this list in the next few years.

Nunez as newcomer of the year is a little confusing

We must have the best damn defensive coordinator in the conference then. ;)

Yedi on the second team? Hmm, I think he has had a first team worthy season. Oh well, none of it matters if he doesn’t do anything in the playoffs.

The Cowboys had the best defense in the conference based on what?

I m sorry but Garrett Dolan should have been Defensive POY. 140 tackles total at 13 per game and the man did that every year.

No. He was injured for much of the season.

Check all the conference team stats for the season. Especially, the total defense one.

I agree. Dolan was my top guy with Tremon Smith 2nd and Odum being the 3rd or 4th best from the league. You could argue Dolan as a top 10 defender in FCS.

Yedi missed 3 games and should have been on first team. Not being a homer here, but SHSU has the 3 best receivers in the Southland in Davis, Stewart and Louis.

Dolan was a damn good LB in a terrible program.

Great point. But one factor doesn't determine who had the best defense.

UCA played and beat ranked teams: #3 FCS SHSU and #18 FCS McNeese
UCA played and lost to: #18 FBS Kansas State

McNeese played and beat ranked teams: NONE
McNeese played and lost to: #3 UCA

Massey has our schedules: Remember there are about 125 FBS schools

Overall ranking:
UCA ranked #99 in nation.
McNeese ranked #169 in nation.

McNeese: SOS is 238.
UCA: SOS is 181.

Defense ranked: There are 125 FBS schools
McNeese: 135 (considered Upper level FCS)
UCA: 103 (considered Lower level FBS)

Points per game allowed:
McNeese 17.1
UCA 17.2

Tackles for Loss:
UCA 92
McNeese 92.5
...................
TIE

SACKS:
McNeese 26.5
UCA 36
.................
Advantage: UCA

INTs
UCA 9
McNeese 16
.................
BIG ADVANTAGE McNeese

Total Tackles:
UCA 784
McNeese 646
.................
??????

Pass Break ups:
UCA 58
McNeese 41
......................
Advantage UCA

Let's look at the head to head with similar competition: (The Cowboys did GREAT against SLC competition)

Points given up:
SLU: McNeese- 3 UCA-6
NWST: McNeese- 24 UCA-17
ACU: McNeese- 7 UCA-0
IUW: McNeese- 7 UCA-10
Lamar: McNeese- 3 UCA 14 (Dang that last quarter third string TD xlolx )
HBU: McNeese- 12 UCA 7
SFA: McNeese- 0 UCA - 20 (for some reason every year SFA got our number..similar to SHSU and SFA in BOTPW)

But I guess the most telling is the actual head to head against each other! Yes, it's one game but it was the only ranked opponent you played.
From what I remember in that game UCA allowed McNeese to move between the 20s but wouldn't allow them to score in the redzone much.

McNeese defense points allowed: 47
UCA defense points allowed: 17

UCA passes: 12 of 16 averaging 21 yards per catch and 4 TDs.
McNeese passes: 16 of 35 averaging 13 yards per catch and 1 TD.
Not so great pass defense for McNeese.

UCA Rushes: 35 attempts for 75 yards.
McNeese Rushes: 40 attempts for 206 yards.
Great rush defense though!

Conclusion: It is difficult to say McNeese has a better defense because of the extremely weak schedule they played as compared to UCAs. If you also look at the individuals on each team on defense on the SLC website you will find UCA has multiple players ranked ahead of McNeese in nearly every category. But again, the biggest factors I see that seperate the two defenses are:
1. Strength of opponents. UCA played far above McNeese in that category.
2. Common opponents and head to head. UCA's defense scored in every quarter (12 poins per quarter) against McNeese and McNeese only scored one TD after the first quarter. That's defense.

I would really like to see which SLC team had the best defense using both team and individual stats...but I have to work on something today...xlolx

I'm just glad Yedi is gone after this year. Man what a receiver!

Sam is losing quite a few playmakers this year, so is UCA.

AVery, Louis, Briscoe, Webb, Hall to name a few...xeekx

I think the SLC will be up for grabs next year and I see McNeese making a solid run at it. I think my bears will fall back a few spots.

You know, Yedi's output still isn't listed on the NCAA official stats for the season, because they only recognize athletes who participated in 75% of a team's games, and at 8 of 11 games, that's only 73%...

I’m glad to see Denmark make all-conference in his last season. Boy am I going to miss him. We’ve been really lucky to be able to see some really great defensive players the last 4 years with Denmark, Dolan and Hall.
