2017 AGS Playoff Pick'em Contest

We're trying things a little bit different this season for several reasons. The main reason is that once we get to the last couple weeks, most of the people who entered are out of the running for the top prizes. The bracket is great fun and filling one out just feels right when you're paying attention to some sort of playoff competition. I think a week-by-week contest would provide much more of a battle, though. That way if you pick a major upset early on, you're not completely out of the running.

Long story short, out with the old and in with the new. This season we're doing a Pick'em contest. Each week, you pick the teams you think will win each game and then you predict the margin of victory for each team.

For those who want to enter, simply follow the above or below link and make your picks. It's all pretty self-explanatory, just make sure to enter your username exactly how it is on here.

One suggestion is for you to make a record of your picks, that way if you want to make a change, you can just PM me what you want to change. Please DON'T submit additional entries. Duplicates will not be appreciated, nor tolerated.

Also, if you decide to participate, make sure to do like we've done in the past and post "I'm in" within this thread. That way I can watch for your entry and we can keep bumping this to the top page so we can get a maximum amount of people participating.

Points will be explained later on in the week, but it will be pretty similar to what we've done in the past scoring wise. Thank you and good luck!

First and second round scoring:
There will be 20 points for each correct pick, and that number will be subtracted by your margin of victory difference divided by 10.
If you nail the margin of victory, you get 5 bonus points for a total game score of 25.

For third round, the base amount is 30 with bonus being 6
Semifinals - 40 with bonus being 8
Finals - 50 with bonus being 10

You lose .1 (one tenth) of a point for each number your margin of victory guess is different from the actual margin of victory.
If you said the margin would be 24 and it was 7, the points subtracted from your 20 will be 17/10 = 1.7. The 17 was taken from the difference between your margin and the actual margin. You can't lose points from a game you picked incorrectly.

Or Acklin, McShane, and McGuire were a three-headed attack going up against the Big Sky DPOY with the MVFC DPOY on the WIU side in Taylor. Hard to believe that it was an even matched game and more people thought being 6-1 on the road, would actually benefit them.

Sagarin predicted 6 of 8 games correctly (missed on Weber St and San Diego) and lost 6.2 points on margins for a total of 113.8. That would've put it tied for 42nd out of 136.

Massey predicted 5 of 8 games correctly (missed on Weber St, San Diego, and Kennesaw St) and lost 4.9 points on margins for a total of 95.1. That would've put it tied for 79th out of 136.

I'll try to keep up with this as the weeks go by just to get an idea of where the computer rankings stack up with the brilliant minds here at AGS.

Yeah, that would've been interesting if they still had last week's data that I could go back and look at. I think it would be skewed to use their current projections for last week's games though. They've still got NAU beating San Diego at home but only by 10 and I would venture to guess that number was significantly higher a week ago.

In the last 10-15 years, staying with the safe pick for the champion was almost a sure thing during the App St. and NDSU runs, but a total toss up in the other years!

I realize now I read you saying you can pick the champion well. Whoops. xsmhx ;)

No they didn't do very well this year. I tracked the entire season, for win/lose, not scores. Not enough time for that.

Current percentage picking winners:

Massey - 77.7% (last year 79%)

Sagarin - 76.0% (last year 77.5%)

Massey picking all scheduled winners in preseason - 73.3% (last year 75.6%)


Neither did as well as last year. It was a disruptive year. Many teams tanked, and many stepped up. I think we all saw that for most of the season.
