The Wedge blog post for the poll this week: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-top-25-week-9-results-2/

There was a ton of movement this week between from #9 on. I'm surprised to see McNeese still hanging in at #25... especially just above a Nicholls team they lost to head-to-head.

I've had them #1 all year, minus the 2 or three weeks I moved USD up there.

I'm going to guess it's the same group of 6-8 every week.

These two seem very backwards to me. Both are 5-3 but WIU has a dominating road win over your #8 team and obliterated FBS CCU (who is bad but is still FBS) along with all 3 losses being to teams in your top 15. UNH's only quality wins are a 10 point win against Georgia Southern (who is worse than CCU) and a 1 point squeaker against Maine. Add to that they have a horrendous loss to Holy Cross.

I'm surprised to see WIU getting hammered as hard as they have been in a few different poll ballots posted so far. I guess I'm just high on them compared to the consensus.

RootinFerDukes

This was a good poll. There's little for me to complain about personally. A few teams were slightly higher or lower than I thought they were, but not by more than a rank or two.

Whoops I lied. Are we potentially overating the SLC a smidge this year? UCA and SHSU I get, but a ranked McNeese and Nicholls right on the outside? Potentially four ranked SLC teams? That seems like a bit much to me.

I completely voted from scratch yesterday. I spent a few hours comparing resumes. Definitely need to revisit these teams since I can’t remember the arguement. :)

I definitely think western Illinois headed in the wrong direction. New Hampshire has been had it in a better direction since the holy cross loss and I expected them to lose the James Madison

Hmm. Or....Paladins finally beating good team....on a consistent basis. No need to have been butt sore. They moved up as they should have. A little inertia maybe, but not totally out to lunch. You don't get a huge amount of points for close losses until you have the wins.

If Furman wins their next two, I imagine they'll be in the top 12 before the playoffs, which I think is appropriate. It Wofford stumbles, you could argue they deserve a seed but let's not get ahead of ourselves

Do you just penalize a good team because their schedule does not allow them to play any top 25 teams?? There is just no way to accurately gauge their strength. I know one thing. UCA is a very good team.

I'll admit that 10-16 is a mess. I really struggled on where to place SDSU. I just did not like their convincing losses to YSU and UNI. I wanted to keep WIU above NAU due to the head-to-head but then ignored head-to-head when placing SDSU in relation to WIU so I deserve some criticism there... it was just a tough week to place teams in that part of the poll for me. WIU and SDSU should be able to clear things up one way or the other with their games this week.

They need to blow out the competition because of the weak schedule then. Close games against SFA, NWST, SELA, PWAM, and none of those teams smell the top 25. At this point maybe I can see top 10, top 5 when multiple teams have better wins is dubious.

We got beat on the road by a team that will likely be in the semifinals (UCA). Richmond, SELA and Nicholls are all good wins. Not sure if you watched the SELA game, but our D shut down a very strong offense and we ran the ball down their throat. The team seems to be coming together towards the end of the season, which happens almost every year. Maybe I am too close to the team to be more objective, but I think they are getting better every week and I think they are better than most on here give them credit for. As usual, the playoffs will sort it out.

You can't call SHSU's loss to UCA a "bad loss" and then call their wins against PV A&M and SFA close wins. Either all of them are close games or all of them are convincing wins/losses.

They played bad competition too close for comfort. Have 2 convincing wins against bad teams. If UCA is truly top 5, then I can get behind SHSU at around 10. I still haven't heard how they are top 5 this year. Look at UCA wins vs SHSU wins (lot of the same teams) and UCA is doing better on all games.

Honest question here as I'm trying to decipher what really is the computational difference between sagarin and massey's rankings.

Both sites have NDSU ahead of JMU in relation to the FCS schools. However, Massey lists NDSU with 22 SOS and JMU 32. Sagarin however surprised me with JMU 176 and NDSU 177 (includes FBS and FCS together).

Why does massey like NDSU's SOS so much more? I'm also shocked to see 0-8 ISU as high as 79th rank. A winless team should be among the bottom 20 at bare minimum. MVFC or not.

I could be wrong, because like you I don't know the difference, but it's possible that it's all in the margin of error or not statistically significant.

Computer rankings are great for tie-breakers among mid-tier teams in top-tier conferences and top-tier teams from mid-tier conferences, but they are a poor baseline for top teams in top-tier conferences, especially when comparing different conferences.

Why does massey like NDSU's SOS so much more? I'm also shocked to see 0-8 ISU as high as 79th rank. A winless team should be among the bottom 20 at bare minimum. MVFC or not.Don't have answer for NDSU vs JMU but disagree that In St at 79 is incorrect. There are nearly 3 leagues worse than the teams ISU B lost to. So going 0-8 vs top 40, leads to a better rating than going 8-0 vs bottom 40 teams, like Pioneer teams. Example of power is Duquesne. They have won vs all played, except for getting beat like a drum vs SDSU.

Explain? A bad loss to a top 5 team? Its not like Sam was blown out in that game?
The 11 point loss on it's own isn't a bad loss. I have no problems with that loss in a vacuum.

I don't vote in a vacuum.

No fault of SHSU, but UR hasn't turned out to be the win we thought it was early in the year. That hurts SHSU some.
Your performance against PVAM was atrocious. That definitely hurts in my voting method
Nicholls gives you a massive boost

Three of the last 4 weeks have hurt SHSU. They are winning, but they are playing bad teams. Winning doesn't mean staying put or moving up. Beating teams you should beat isn't impressive. Crushing teams you should beat is, and what will get you moved up.

SFA isn't a good team. It was an 11 point win, and the yardage was a big plus for SHSU but it was a 4 point game with less than 5 minutes left. SHSU couldn't put the game away. I know that is "the rivalry" so I grant leeway there. If anything that game was a net 0 result for me but closer to being a net loss.

From there you hosted Northwestern State. NWSU is terribad. That was a 4 point win. NWSU led by 10 after 1. Lead by 6 after 2. Lead by 8 after 3. It took a TD with 1:04 left to give SHSU their first lead of the game. SHSU gave up 518 yards. Gave up 7.6 YPC. I don't care that SHSU had 509 yards passing. You needed all of that because you had to throw the entire second half to get back into the game. That is a horrific game, even though you won. That is a major net loss when it comes to voting.

Lamar you crushed. You did exactly to Lamar what you should have. You still gave up 290 yards rushing and 520 yards of offense though. Lamar is also very terribad.

SELA is a below average team and you had a 10 point win and were tied at half. A win is a win, but probably shouldn't have been tied at half and just had a 10 point win over a team that is bottom half in the computers.

Looking at the Massey composite ratings for the SLC we see
MSU at 37
NSU at 39
SELA at 50
SFA at 69
ACU at 88
NWSU at 89
ICU at 109
HBU 115
Lamar at 116

Those are out of 124

That's half your conference in the bottom half of the FCS. It's over half your conference in the bottom. When that is the case you 100% need to be extra convincing. That just isn't something I've seen from SHSU this year.

I had SHSU at 12 but I really could make a case for them to be lower.

Right or wrong your conference hurts you. If you blow everyone out voters can go "Look how bad your conference is". If you struggle it's easy for voters like me to go "You need to be more convincing".

Double right or wrong it also hurts that when you get up against JMU you get treated like...well, comparisons that I'm not comfortable sharing in public.

SHSU is in a tough spot when it comes to voting. I half feel for the fans, but then I don't because the way many act.

Guessing there are some Soft Houston State voters amongst those 8.

Puzzled by that too. Not that NDSU schedule is rated higher, but just how the metrics of the ratings overall seem so different.

JMU was supposed to win by 29 (according to Sagarin) against a ranked UNH team- only won by 21 and thus dropped 6-7 spots in the Sagarins. Makes sense based on the ratings I suppose. However, in the Massey ratings, JMU moved up 15 spots by beating the same New Hampshire team. Odd

Honestly, the poll overall looks pretty good. Maybe swapping Nicholls and UNI. We do have a nice win over SDSU, but the YSU win is looking worse and worse. We couldn't have looked any more terrible against NDSU. Every good team we have played outside of SDSU has beaten us.

Just my 2 cents on that.

They use different math algorithms. Sure seems strange, but clearly the algorithms value different things. And they are basically all proprietary so we can't even figure out why the act differently.

Regarding the game vs. SELA, Kats were a very slight favorite heading into that game according the almighty Massey, they won by 10 (more than they were supposed to win by), and it is now not a good win? And if they are currently at 50 out of 124 that would make them in the top half of the computers, and still getting a few votes in this very poll.

No.....because it is the same ****ing thing every week. In fact, many times members of their own fanbase/conference are hardest on their own teams......glance over the polls that have NDSU #1.

It's the same as the previous breakdown from earlier this season plus and/or minus a few. I'm guessing two or three voters miss getting their ballots in on any given weekend.

Yeah it is the same as previous. The voters do not change each week. One or two may miss an occasional vote, but they are the same. And in case you missed it, the bias has been repeatedly shown to be pretty neutral or even reverse against the voters own conference.

Old question and if folks seem short, it is because it has been discussed at length before.

But he also has Western Illinois, who demolished NAU, at 24.

Can't go strictly by head to head at this point in the season, though I agree that NAU is too low (see my poll above).

Good poll overall. The top 10 is what it should be, although I think SUU is better than NAU. Solid poll, I would be happy if this is how the seeding ended up.

The only place that it makes sense to go strictly by H2H this late is when the resumes are really similar.

You can get into circular arguments, yes, but when you have teams with identical records...also need to look at how teams are trending.

No way Elon is the 6th best team in the country, no freaking way.

As of right now, they are. So, the AGS poll has them at 7 instead of 6 and SHSU at 6 and I have them at 7.

Let's break this down:

Record Against Equal Competition:

Week 4: Elon @ Richmond 36-33
Week 1: Richmond @ SHSU AT Waco 48-34

So Elon won on the road while SHSU won at "home" and Elon faced a Richmond that had a chance to groove VS a new Richmond for SHSU, so Elon gets the nod here.

Winning Streak:

Elon W7 (Loss to 7-1 Toledo MAC #28 FBS)
SHSU W4 (Loss to 7-1 UCA SL #4 FCS)

Elon gets the nod here again.

SOS:

Elon SOS = 18
SHSU SOS = 56

Elon gets the nod here again.

FCS Record:

Elon = 7-0
SHSU= 7-1

One could argue a push so I will give it a push.

AGS T25 Record:

Elon = 4-0
SHSU = 2-1

Once again, Elon gets the nod again.

So overall, I would say Elon won 4 of the 5 main categories while they tied a 2nd category. I ask you, tell me again how Elon is not above SHSU, Wofford, SDSU, NAU, and SUU?

URI has been competitive in every game except Maine and Stony Brook and they were down by 2 to Maine at halftime, down by 1 score going into the 4th Q against UNH, took Central Michigan to Double OT, and even Stony Brook they were never out of it.

I am not saying JMU will not win, but give URI some credit here. They are not the worst team in the CAA and could be easily .500 if not for some dumb coaching decisions by Fleming. It looks like they turned the program around and depending on how they do against JMU, (URI that is), will decide whether or not URI is considered a bad loss.

I really don't care. We're 8-0 and control our destiny for the Celebration Bowl. We also have multiple players in the running for multiple post-season awards and Brandon Parker is steadily increasing his draft stock, increasing our odds of players drafted in consecutive years. We're also drawing the best recruits we've had in years.

Wofford fans will take great offense with the "North Wofford" insult. Get ready for some very crafty "Refined Southern" responses that on the surface look like they are paying you some respect but on further recollection will reveal themselves as brutal. Wofford, Furman, Samford and Citadel grads can do this as casually as tea on the front porch.

Two things that some on here don’t seem to realize.
1) sos is important, but it isn’t the only metric. Please try to come up with something else other than that. Sometimes wins are wins and losses are losses. If a team is 9-0 or 10-0, you shouldn’t be ignoring them forever.
2) stop referencing that W-L vs AGS top 25 metric if it’s referring to a record against THEN ranked teams. I don’t care that you beat #3 EWU in week 2. They’re now #15 or whatever (I didn’t look it up). You beat a top 15 team, not a top 3. Some try to argue otherwise. Nope.

A&T is 8-0. As long as they keep winning and others lose, they will slowly move up the board. That is how it works.

1) Slot voting is lazy voting. It is an incorrect metric. Please try to come up with something else other than that. Sometimes close wins against inferior teams are not as good as close losses against great teams. If a team is 5-3 or 6-2, you shouldn't be ignoring them forever.

I guess with Kennesaw losing to Samford should put a scare on some people. They are continuing the program, which is good, but unless they beat Monmouth, I don't see them garnering votes, which would drop Monmouth out of the pole. Duquense got destroyed by SDSU and they have 0 good wins. I hear you though with the bottom half of the poll trying to figure it out, but those caused me to raise eyebrows.

I'm not an expert, but I'm a bit better than a layman and I'll try to explain.

First off, get it out of your head that the Sagarin/Massey rating is influenced by the SOS. The SOS in these systems is calculated as the final step, AFTER the ratings have been computed. So many seem to think that the SOS comes early in the process and influences the final rating. The reality is completely the opposite.

As for the differences between Massey and Sagarin...

Sagarin seems to put more emphasis on the margin of victory, while Massey seems to put more emphasis on the W/L outcome of games. Massey used to be 100% W/L based back in the BCS days(margin of victory was not allowed to be considered by the BCS), but I don't believe that's true anymore. Still, the two systems calculate things differently. Once that is done, only then is SOS calculated for everyone.

One thing people might want to look at is the RECENT column in Sagarin. In this column, Sag weights the more recent games more heavily than the early-season games. For instance, YSU is ranked 96 overall in the composite ranking, but 125 in the RECENT calculation. On the flip side, NDSU benefits in the RECENT column due to the harder games over the last few weeks. NDSU is 43 overall right now, but 31 in the RECENT.

Hammersmith
October 30th, 2017, 11:45 PM
Puzzled by that too. Not that NDSU schedule is rated higher, but just how the metrics of the ratings overall seem so different.

JMU was supposed to win by 29 (according to Sagarin) against a ranked UNH team- only won by 21 and thus dropped 6-7 spots in the Sagarins. Makes sense based on the ratings I suppose. However, in the Massey ratings, JMU moved up 15 spots by beating the same New Hampshire team. Odd

Also realize that teams don't exist in a bubble. Let's look at the JMU example you brought up. JMU was at 72.61 last week. I'm going to assume you used the home field advantage correct when computing the 29pt MOV prediction. Now I don't know the exact numbers, but Sagarin views different margins of victory differently. For example, anything within about 6pts either way is considered a wash. If you are predicted to win by 24 but only win by 20, it will barely move the needle. It will move a little more out to about +/-14. Beyond that, the needle moves a lot more. Winning by 20 beyond the prediction is going to move the needle a lot. But things slow down again way out at the far end. Beating the prediction by 70 is not that much different than beating the prediction by 80.

Back to JMU vs UNH again. If Sagarin predicted a win by 29 and the actual win was by 21, then you've got a differential of -8. That will bump you down a little, but not much. JMU was 72.61 last week, and 72.18 this week. A 0.43pt is really minor. But add to that what your previous opponents did as well. If all your previous opponents under-performed, then your team is going to take a hit from that. If they all over-performed, the you'll see a bump.

As far as dropping 6-7 spots, you really shouldn't look at it that way. Even if your rating stays the same, your position on the chart can change due to what the teams around you are doing. JMU could have gone from 72.61 to 72.60 but still dropped in the ranking if a few teams just below improved their scores. The teams in Sagarin are packed so close together by rating, that tiny changes can move teams around.

Odd

I will add my 2 cents as well. Massey and Sagarin also compute games against Div II and lower differently. The fact that JMU and NH have not played them doesn't matter because they are tied to teams who have. Sagarin has been doing some new things lately but I don't believe they even factor any sub-Div I results in still. Their new predictions do, but not the ratings. It wouldn't be enough to move the needle big time, but added to the other reasons, it would still contibute to the discrepancy.

Bump for the FCS Top 10.

Excellent work team. We were off by 9 and 10 but this is why we have the best poll in all of college football.

We were not off. They just mixed that up but it is arguable. Remember, we don't get it wrong, sometimes the committee just misses on one of the picks a bit...which means they do a pretty damn good job.:D

You are right. My mistake.

I honestly would not be surprised if they copied this poll and then changed 9 and 10 so that the NCAA would not "plagerize" our work.

I don't know that I can go that far with the thing. I do remember last years SC poll was not similar at first but did come around over the next few weeks and to be honest I and all of us would be honored if our opinions on the matter....mattered to them so if they do stop by I welcome their views and respect the depth of their research on this task.

BTW, did I miss the STATS Poll completely this week or was it not posted here? If it was not posted that is a dereliction of duty my our membership.

I'm probably just not seeing it.

I would be completely honored if they used it. I was being more sarcastic in how it would be ironic if a "college association" used our work and did not cite it. But as I said, I would be more than grateful if we found out that they used this poll.
