After losing safeties coach Clay Jennings to Baylor, Art Briles didn't have to look far to find a replacement. Bubba McDowell, the former Oiler who has been coaching at Texas Southern for the past four seasons, is now a Cougar.

"He's going to be a great addition, not only to our defensive staff, but to our staff as a whole," Briles said. "Besides being a great individual, Bubba is a man who possesses a passion for the game and a genuine care for the student-athletes. He's going to help us continue to win championships. I'm proud that he's a Cougar."

McDowell, 40, spent seven years in the NFL — six with the Oilers and one with the Carolina Panthers — and played collegiate ball at Miami, where he was a starter on the Hurricanes' 1987 national-championship team.
