Samford's jump kind of blows me away. They have stayed well ahead of WCU even though we beat them. They beat Wofford and leap way up into the top-10. Wofford drops to #10, and WCU stays back in the last 5 (a single move up with 7 teams in front of us losing games). I don't know exactly where we all belong, but I'd say given the games between these 3 SoCon teams in head-to-head, we belong basically in back-to-back-to-back spots and not a difference of 12 between WCU and the team they beat.

I am not complaining about the league having 2 top-10 teams - that is great for the conference. But this is my bitch session about my school :)

Nope. Not buying Samford. Give me WCU.

Delaware, 5-2, win over Richmond, only losses to Va Tech and a 10 pt game to JMU, and still not ranked. Richmond still there at 17 though, with one more loss to boot. This kind of poll is what makes the AGS poll so much more valued.

I think all three of Wofford, Western and Samford are top 12 or top 15 teams but I don't know if Samford is there yet.

They have a good schedule that they've performed superbly against, but I'd like to see how their defense plays against a non-option team

We all know it is a joke, but the casual sports fan looks at this and doesn't have a clue that coaches are just mailing it in (literally and figuratively).

I think I can answer that - they gave up 38 points and over 600 yards to Western :)

That being said, they got 34 and also had over 600 yards. That is why I say that all 3 are right there. In other "jokes", Furman only had a single vote.

Might be the worst FCS poll I've ever seen.

As I said in another thread, Western Carolina and Furman NOT getting proper respect.

So, SDSU moves up 5 spots after a win over Missouri State? How?

Yeah, well, they beat us. Hodges could probably beat any team by himself if you force him. I want to see Samford play a middle of the road offense (Furman, Mercer) that can play decent defense as well. Their rush defense is pretty decent considering they've played 5 of the best rush teams you could face as an FCS team (Wofford, Western, Citadel, Kennesaw, UGA).

I can't ever get a good read on Samford. I think they are least optimally matched against a team that does power running like your MVFC team, Furman or chattanooga when they were good.

Is MVFC power running really that much different from the running of those opponents of ours that you mentioned? Last year's matchup with Wofford vs YSU didn't indicate much difference to me, even though WC ran the option.

It's different because very few Socon teams run a pro set/I formation; most of the run-heavy teams run a spread (Western Carolina) or an option (Citadel, Wofford). The one team that comes close to the pro-set/I formation is Furman, but even they run a lot of option and option-like sets.

Though both styles of play quantitatively rack up a lot of yards (Socon teams probably on average racking up more rush yards), the option relies more on execution/is more high-risk, high-reward. In an option offense, you're more likely to lose a ball on a pitch or get stopped for no yards/a loss (think QBs eating it near the LOS). That's not to say that Power I/pro set teams don't rely on execution (every team does), but that the execution they rely on is more strength on strength than scheming/ relying on angles like the option does.

Compound that with pro set offenses having a more viable intermediate passing game and if you're good at what you do, you're more consistently better at running the ball and you can pass the ball (look no further as to why Alabama, Wisconsin, Stanford all have consistent success and the MVFC does as well).

Right now, I don't think you can look at the stats to see how good or bad Samford's run defense is. They've played a very loaded, option-oriented opposition for the first 7 games. Compound that with the style of play they do offensively, and it's no secret why they've let up a lot of yards per game.

Samford is as good as they always are (obviously), but I can't really evaluate how good their defense is until they play Furman or Mercer.
