Thanks for mentioning WR Nathan Stewart. That guy catches everything near him. I love Yedi Louis, but Stewart will break every record at SHSU and the Southland before it's all over. He's the ebony Cooper Kupp.

But faster. Plus he doesn't flop like Kupp did in Huntsville.

I think Mac Bignell, Montana State Linebacker, is likely to get on the list before the end of the season.

I almost put him on the list. If he had done a little more in terms of tackles I would have included him.

Really good instincts, intelligence, and plays hard but I don't think he is a next level guy at all. Just not a good athlete. Your typical small school star linebacker who just lacks the beast qualities for the next level but very good for what you want in the SLC. I actually like Goins of McNeese State more as a player.

Stewart is your best offensive player. Yes, I said it. I like Briscoe and think he could get drafted but Stewart is your most physically talented player.

5 TD's in 3 games for Wieneke and he gets removed from the list?

You realize he didn't even play much in the second half of 2 of those 3 games since they were blowouts right?

I think Gresch Jensen will at least be in the conversation by the end, especially if our defense continues on its current trajectory.

The words "next level" never came up in my post. I thought this was a thread about FCS players of the year watch list not what players have pro potential. Dolan put up beast numbers last year and is doing so this year..at the FCS level...about 11.5 tackles per game.

Since this thread is about FCS players of the year, here's his stats from last year, which will likely fall this year at his pace:

2016: Dolan became the first Associated Press and STATS All-America selection in HBU football history...
was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which honors the FCS Defensive Player of the Year…
earned All-Southland Conference First-Team honors, his third-straight all-conference selection…started all 11 games as a junior…
ranked second nationally with 12.3 tackles per game…
recorded 135 tackles (47 solo), 15.5 for losses of 60 yards, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, three quarterback hurries and three pass breakups

So yeah, hitting 45 tackles in 4 games is impressive...and NOTHING about NEXT LEVEL....just that he should be in high consideration for FCS player of the year for defense...just like last year. xthumbsupx

I almost put him on the list. If he had done a little more in terms of tackles I would have included him.
I agree his stats don't match up at this point. But they've come against some good opponents (and 1 less game than most) - #16 FBS Washington State, #3 SDSU and then ranked UND.

But that's why I said will likely be on the list - tough to put him there right now

You may regret not having Holy Cross QB Peter Pujals on your watch list.

Are Edmunds and Ibitokun-Hanks off due to injury?

5 TD's in 3 games for Wieneke and he gets removed from the list?

You realize he didn't even play much in the second half of 2 of those 3 games since they were blowouts right?

Yes, but as you know the Payton is about stats. Can't be a WR on the final 20 and have an average of 57 yards per game. Sadly, voters won't overlook it. I'll put him back in if he is averaging over 100 a game and keeps putting up numbers. Just like Timon Parris has not done anything to warrant me removing him but it is tough for the OL and I kept Parker on because he is tearing up the MEAC. I'll keep updating as we go and I'm sure Wieneke will end up back on.

So yeah, hitting 45 tackles in 4 games is impressive...and NOTHING about NEXT LEVEL....just that he should be in high consideration for FCS player of the year for defense...just like last year. xthumbsupx

I guess when I hear the word beast I think of someone who is playing a level above by far. He is a great FCS player and I expect him to repeat as an All-American for sure. I wish he was two steps faster and then I think he would be a prospect.

I edited to put him in others considered. Don't have him in top 20 because of completion percentage. He is a good one though. If you had asked me last year about his pro prospects I would have said no but right now he has a shot to sign a contract. I just couldn't add him to the top 20 until he gets his completion % up.

Yes on the two injured guys. I will add guys back. Just because I remove a guy doesn't mean they can't get put back on. I was going to stack this again late in October.

For PAYTON, how about:
Malcom Summers, Elon, Jr. -78 carries, 503 yards, 6.4 avg, 3 TD, 125.75 yards/game, 4 catches, 24 yards in 4 games.

I dont think a single SHSU fan will disagree with you, not even Briscoe.

Sorry guys. I'm a flaming homer;

Dude's even laying the hammer on blocks too. He's gotten 2 targeting penalties already this year. Fortunately they were overturned but the intensity alone was enough to draw the flags.

As far as Richmond goes (outside of Lauletta):

WR Cortrelle Simpson: 29 Rec, 565 Yds, 3 TD
WR Dejon Brisset: 31 Rec, 512 Yds, 3 TD

DT Andrew Clyde: 24 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 2 BPU, 1 QBH might warrant some consideration if he keeps it up, but if offenses keep running the ball like they have been against us that sack number might not grow like it should. On that note, add Malcolm Summers!!!

I was very impressed with him against Richmond. He is one of many other names who could easily make the 2nd update. The thing keeping him off now is the lack of rushing TDs. If he had 4-5, then I would have added him.

I was really impressed with him. I'm trying not to put 2 players from the same team on one list anymore but with SDSU and NCAT right now that is very hard not to!

You better get Deluca back on your list. I think he had double digit tackles in the first half.

Does WIU's Jaelon Acklin garner some consideration on the Payton watch list after his monster 19 catch, 343 yard, 3 TD performance against USD?

What's crazy is he more than doubled his season totals from the first 3 games in all those categories. Looks like on the season he has 33 catches for 584 yards and 5 TDs (4 games).

Of course it did. Borsellino (sp?) being gone also helped. According to Acklin's bio (http://goleathernecks.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=12179&path=football) he had 21 career catches for 364 yards and 2 TDs coming into this season. So he basically replicated his numbers from his first 3 seasons as a collegiate WR in one game against USD yesterday.

It bears repeating that WIU's 2nd leading receiver yesterday had 29 yards. If Acklin didn't have a massive target on his back before from opposing defenses he will going forward.

On the season the rest of WIU's receivers have 48 receptions for 502 yards and 5 TDs so he's got half of their total receiving output by himself now through 4 games.

I meant it more, as in without McShane (since he was nulfied for 10car for 15yds), is Acklin that good or does WIU always rely on that "one guy" and he just became that "one guy". Kind of like Chase Edmonds at Fordham, Tarik Cohen at NCAT, etc...

Possibly... but it seems like with these watch lists are purely based on numbers and little else. He certainly has the numbers at this point.

No disagreeing there, but if he ends up being "The Guy" at WIU for receiving, I don't know if he will replicate it once defenses key on him. As of now, no reason to exclude him, but the Valley will tell us how good he really is.

Yea, Acklin is definitely really good...is he Payton Watch List good?...I don't think he's shown himself to be at that level yet. I don't think we'll see a performance quite like that again this season, although he could have some really good games against SIU and MSU. I want to see how he does against NDSU and IL State's defenses before really going in on him being at that level (we don't play YSU this season, otherwise that'd be a great test too). In the meantime, he's a great weapon to have for us, regardless of where he might end up in the final award voting.

EDIT - one more thought on this...it didn't look like a record-breaking day to most of us watching. We got to our band alumni gathering at BWW after the game and I was looking at the stats. Everyone I told about his yardage in the game, how it set the school and conference record, was flabbergasted. So, it really didn't "seem" like a record-breaking game for him, but part of that could be that the announcer didn't mention anything about it during the game and we didn't really realize he was being targeted quite that much.

Yeah well the top receiver in FCS got on the considered list, and he also played on the same team.
