We remember when Coach Sullivan was battling his bout with cancer. Scary. Of course, WCU lost coach Waters to ALS in 1989 and, thank God, Coach Briggs successfully beat throat cancer in 2005-06. All this makes wins and losses seem so unimportant.

Sad news. Cam had to have a leg removed today. Cannot imagine what that would feel like to an 18 year old that has signed to play college football. Prayers and well wishes. I am almost certain WCU will still honor this kid's scholarship. Man........

#TeamSuperCam: Brown UpdatePosted on June 30, 2017 (https://northeastfloridamatmen.wordpress.com/2017/06/30/teamsupercam-brown-update/) by FloridaMatmen (https://northeastfloridamatmen.wordpress.com/author/sheaton2013/) — Leave a comment (https://northeastfloridamatmen.wordpress.com/2017/06/30/teamsupercam-brown-update/#respond)
So good morning.
Yesterday, Florida High 2017 graduate Cam Brown, a two-time state medalist for the Seminole wrestlers and all-state footballer, had surgery on his left leg, where the surgeons removed the leg two inches above his knee, to fight the growth of osteosarcoma there.
According to the Team Super Cam Facebook page, a prosthetic device should fit him well. He’s out of recovery and in his hospital room and will be able to eat today. Hopefully he’ll be able to be home before July 4th.
In the meantime, there is a fundraiser for Cam scheduled for Saturday, July 29th (that’s four Saturdays from tomorrow, if you read this on the 30th of June), from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Rockhill Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee. More details are on the attached flyer below.
As my #trackdad responsibilities will have come to a close for the summer by that point, in fact I will not even have parental responsibilities on that day with my son up north with his mother, I am going to take my crabby car — which has decided to become temperamental these past two weeks, what with the lovely weather we’ve been having — and come out to this event.
I think you should make plans, too. Hopefully, I will see a large contingent of the north Florida wrestling community in attendance.

I'm afraid that the doctors, even with the left leg amputation, did not get all of the cancer. Sheesh....I cannot even begin to imagine what this family is going through. Even if this kid never dons a purple and gold uniform, he will always be a Catamount. Sad.

Florida High graduate Cam Brown, who bravely fought cancer, passed away early Saturday morning.

Cam was diagnosed with osteocarcoma in May, but vowed to play football again, as he was signed to play for Western Carolina University.

Probably the most highly-touted incoming Freshman we had. Even though he never played in a game for the Cats, he touched this team in ways nobody will know. Coach Speir quotes him on a weekly basis, and for a young man who got far too few years on this Earth, he shines as an example of how to face adversity for not only Western's football team but for all of us. RIP Cam!

He was originally committed to Mercer and I know the Bears' Coaches were very high on him as a Player and as a Person. Such a sad, sad story.

As Mercer is at WCU this weekend, I hope both Teams will honor him/his memory/legacy in some way. Maybe a quick fund-raising challenge between the 2 schools/Teams/Fans/Coaches with half the proceeds going to the family for medical bills and half going to a Charity for this particular form of cancer or to the American Cancer Society. Things can happen fast on social media these days. I think something like that would be in WCU's 'court' to lead. Just an idea...

RIP Cam Brown

A few weeks ago after Western's loss to Wofford in Spartanburg, SC, Coach Speir made the drive down to Florida after the game to visit Cam and his family.

During the visit, coach asked Cam if he had a message to take back to the football team after the loss to Wofford..... Cam told him to tell the team to...... “Never get tired of the fight, because the fun is in the fight”

Cam believed until the end that he would beat cancer and play football for Western Carolina. That's the way he battled cancer, with a positive attitude and always a smile on his face.

Yeah coach told me about that and talked about how Cam would fight until the last second and his only plan was to play football for WCU even after getting a prosthetic leg and beating cancer.
