Bison have 7 on offense and 8 on defense coming back in '17. DeLuca and Tanguay should be back from injuries on defense and with RB by committee this year, you could say that only the 3 OL will have to be replaced. I guess some of the young OL are really good and it will be interesting to see who rises to the top after spring ball.

Stick needs to improve his passing game for sure. A deep threat at WR would help and WRs being able to get separation from CBs that are physical.

IMO, the defense will be better with a lot of young guys (DBs) getting experience this year. Losing 2 LBs but with DeLuca coming back and Cox is the real deal I guess at LB (FR), I think the defense has the potential to be really good.

Schedule looks favorable. SDSU and YSU will be tough away games in conference and EWU will be tough at their place.

Villanova returns 16 starters from 9-4 team. Big losses are NFL player to be DE Tanoh Kpassagnon & All-CAA LB Austin Calitro.

I expect Nova to improve offensively against quality teams & have a very good albeit not the #1 FCS defense next season. I'm hoping that our special teams improve to at least not hurting the team before I die.

I expect this will be a playoff team for new Coach Mark Ferrante.

Returning Starters:
Offense: 9
Defense: 7
Kicker & Punter also returning.

Schedule:
@Lehigh
@Temple
Lafayette

8 CAA games *
Elon, Delaware, Maine, Richmond - Home
@Albany, @JMU, @Rhode Island, @Towson

DNP: W&M, UNH, & Stony Brook

*assumes no change to CAA schedule.

So, no #1 seed next year then, even if undefeated...due to SOS...right? :D

The Panthers lose a bunch of coaches. Like usual. Probably doesn't mean anything one way or the other.

SFA has plenty returning except at QB, where the Jacks don't have much experience.

Hopefully we can develop a QB into a good field general quickly, because we are loaded at WR.

SMU and Southern Utah for our OC games.

Sean Engel! This kid, if he can get a decent passing QB, could easily win ROY in the Valley and compete for #1 WR in the Valley for the next 4 years if he stays healthy. Kid is a freak of nature and a hell of a WR. I thought the Bison got a steal when he did not go FBS.

Great description of what is coming back for NDSU. I will add that the running backs should be better next year then this year with more of the carries going to Dunn and Anderson.

Losing Ambrosius at the left DE will hurt as he was a good player and losing Stumpf and Gee-Tucker were two year starters at OLB.

What will be interesting is how Plank and DeLuca see the field together.

I think this is a 9-2 or 10-1 team.

The questions to me are as follows;
1A. Sticks ability to throw the ball when teams stack the box?
1B. Can the offense coordinator be less predictable. The play calling at timesome was great (seeing Iowa) but towards the end of the year the play calling became too predictable?
1C. Can the wide receivers get separation against good corners (see James Madison game)?
2. Will Tanguay be ready for fall camp from his class tear?
3. How will this team respond. The James Madison game was the first time anyone on that roster (5 classes of players have suffered a playoff loss). Do they come out with fire and play with fun again? This year they looked like it was a job and at times they weren't having fun. Klieman even mentioned this a few times.
4. Can Grimsley be a better run supporting strong safety. He missed too many tackles for my liking. Perhaps we were spoiled by Heagle but Grimsley is missing too many tackles.

And teams from the Dakotas have not fared well against UD...both UND and SDSU can attest to that. Maybe you can finally represent something of a challenge?

Kansas State and Murray State for out of conference. We got recruits coming in from Florida, Alabama, and Texas instead of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana...totally different recruiting areas than in the past. We'll see how this pans out. This coach has been here for 3 years now and has improved the Bears every year. I don't see him doing worse than last year.

Yep. I would expect Delaware to be back to a legitimate FCS playoff contender in short time. This series was to keep the UD faithful engaged as the AD was planning the termination of their head coach. I also think it was sort of a messsge that FBS is not on the horizon, but top notch FCS program again is.

Lehigh should be the preseason favorite in the Patriot League and Top 15ish team heading into next year. Pelletier and Casey are arguably the top WR combo in FCS and Bragalone is a beast at RB. Mays is proven starter and a better pure passer than Shaf. However, he's nowhere close to the runner Nick was so the offense will have to be tweaked some. The OL will return 4 out of 5 starters. They were good all year.

Lehigh's 2017 season will come down to the defense. It was better this year but still not very good. UNH exposed it again in the playoffs. The LB unit must be completely rebuilt and the playoff game showed what missing 4 years Colton Caslow means. The DL is slowly getting bigger and deeper. Overall, there's real potential there. The secondary is similar to the DL in terms of experience and better depth. But it needs to limit big plays and improve their ball skills.

The UNH playoff game was a flat-out embarrassment and not reflective of Lehigh's playoff history. I think that will stick with them all offseason. They open with Villanova at Goodman before embarking on a favorable OOC schedule. The expectation has to be to beat the Wildcats this year. League wise the Mountain Hawks travel to Colgate and Fordham which will be tough. Lehigh's track record at Colgate is pretty good so I'm usually confident again the Raiders in Hamilton. Fordham will be Lehigh's biggest threat in the league.

I'm looking at 2017 like 2011 for Lehigh. The ceiling should be legit Top 10 with a chance to make a run in the playoffs with a favorable draw. Lehigh generally lives up to expectation. They seem primed for a big year homerism aside....

Preseason PL should look something like this...
1. Lehigh - Loaded on offense and good experience on defense. Defense must improve though to reach ceiling.
2. Fordham - They return a lot of talent including Edmonds. Like Lehigh, a defense could be the ticket to a Top 10 team.
3. Holy Cross - They return Pujals and some other talented guys. Gilmore has to put together an 8 win year season.
4. Colgate - They're hit hard by graduation. Likely a 5 or 6 win team in 2017.
5. Lafayette - I think the new coaching staff will make a difference in year one. They could finish higher...
6. Bucknell - A good defense but the offense continues to be underwhelming. Headed nowhere fast....
7. Georgetown - Continue to do nothing to improve their situation.

When is the last time a Patriot League team finished in the top 10? Lehigh when they made a playoff run? Just curious.

Losing 64-21 to UNH should dampened any thought process that they will gain that credibility with the nation's voters anytime soon even if they go undefeated in regular season.

I'd be mildly surprised they beat Villanova as Lehigh has no answer to the Cats run game & will play keep away from your offense. Like it or not Nova has better athletes on the field at the majority of positions.

I'll let you know after seeing how the defense looks in spring & summer. The strength of that defense will be the linebackers & secondary so they will matchup against Lehigh's spread passing game. It's also the 1st game of the season so there won't be the FBS hangover effect this season.

Lehigh finished 5th/6th in 2011.

Lehigh and Villanova played a basically even game this year. They're due to beat the Wildcats and next year would seem to be a great chance. A win there would set the tone for a big year imo.

One bad game against UNH shouldn't kill them that bad if they and the rest of the PL improve their OOC play. Especially with what they have coming back on offense. Beating Villanova and becoming a Top 10 team starts with being more physical on defense.

There was a reason why Lehigh entered the UNH game as the favorite. Not sure what happened that game but no one saw that coming. That was not reflective of Lehigh's overall team in 2016. Likewise with what happened to SHSU and UNH against JMU. The Bearkats and Wildcats will be back in 2016

We shall see. Villanova will not come to Goodman taking them lightly like I think they did a bit this season coming off the Pitt game. Plenty of time to analyze this game.

7. Georgetown - Continue to do nothing to improve their situation.

Hard to argue against the premise, but there is no good answer. Spend $4M a year just to finish in fifth or sixth place? Georgetown is long on effort and short on talent thanks to the Ivy Index. And when the latest SAT ranges came back for the upcoming admissions cycle (700-770 CR, 710-770 Math), that's a tall hill to climb in this league with what they have to offer.

An 0-3 versus the Ivy and an 0-6 league record seems a good pick right now.

We return 3 All American players next year and lose one. We lose one OL (an all american) and a hand full of LBs (two were all conference). We return 10 starters on O and 8 on D. We added a 230 LB RB from B1G Minnesota and a juco safety that should contribute right away.

We went undefeated in Big Sky play without playing EWU so we were second best in the conference but ended as co-champs. Choked big time in the playoffs against Richmond. Next years team should be our deepest and best of the D1 era by far. If our OL improve the way they should from last year we could be a dangerous team. On paper our schedule appears to be harder next year but who really knows for sure? Smash teams? Yup. Weight room? Yup.

Home Games:

Sac State
EWU

Away Games:

Khalid Abdullah - Starting RB, greatest RB in History
Taylor Reynolds - Starting CB
Justin Wellons - LB

Lotta loss, especially on the OLine and WR corps. Abdullah is also a huge loss but we've still got Cardon Johnson and Ga Tech Transfer Marcus Marshall. We've also got a lot of depth at WR and LB.

Sean Engel! This kid, if he can get a decent passing QB, could easily win ROY in the Valley and compete for #1 WR in the Valley for the next 4 years if he stays healthy. Kid is a freak of nature and a hell of a WR. I thought the Bison got a steal when he did not go FBS.

And teams from the Dakotas have not fared well against UD...both UND and SDSU can attest to that. Maybe you can finally represent something of a challenge?

On defense, we're losing:

Miquiyah Zamora LB
Zack Bruce S
Samson Ebukam DT

All three were first team BSC, but everyone else is back and we should continue to improve.

On offense:

Cooper Kupp WR
Shaq Hill WR
Kendrick Bourne WR
Zack Wemberly. TE

We've replaced a highly talented and record breaking trio of receivers before in Kaufmann, Edwards, and Hurd. The next group is talented and speedy with Nic Splendorio, Stu Styles, and Nsimba Webster all back with a fair amount of game experience. Terrence Grady, at 6'5", should be the big target and also has experience. Both true freshman RB's, Pierce and Custer are back as is Gubrud and the entire Oline. Next year's offense might look similar to 2013-2014 with a Quincy Forte-like running game to create more balance.

Everyone on Special Teams is back if you don't count Kupp who shared punt return duties.

Another tough September with games @ TTU, NDSU, @ Fordham, @ Montana. Need to at least split these to finish 8-3 or better. The game at UND on Nov. 11th could also be a big one.

We just lost our head coach to FBS Coastal. So it's a toss up. Roster is loaded. New guy is from the current staff. If we keep both coordinators I think the schedule lines up very nicely for us to make a run at 3peat Big South champs. I expect Kennesaw and GWU to surprise some folks and give us a run.

The new guy is the QB coach Mark Tucker. Former ETSU and Citadel guy. He was Chadwells coach at ETSU when Chadwell played there. Word is he is an outstanding recruiter and responsible for a lot of the current CSU talent on campus.

Our DC is the key. He's the hidden gem. We keep him and keep our recruiting up and we'll be fine.

NDSU biggest losses will be on the OL and LB. We turn out OL better then anyone so no concerns there. Getting Deluca back along with Plank's experience and young guys like Cox, Mercadel and Pauly we should be fine at LB. Plus getting Tanguay back will be huge for our defense. Hopefully another year for the secondary will help them improve. Stick needs to take a major step up with his QB play. Need Bruce Anderson to step up into that power back with King gone. We were really snakebit in 2016. With guys coming back (including guys with injuries) in 2017, coupled with an upgrade at QB thanks to the Illinois transfer, I think we will be able to characterize 2016 as an unfortunate aberration.

Not entirely true either.

Prior to 1978 there was D1 large college, d1 small college, and then D2. There wasn't an official split, but there was a split....and Jackson State didn't even fall on the small college side of that line until 1976, the year after Payton left. Jackson State's timeline is all screwed up as they were NCAA D1 small college, NAIA, NAIA D2, NCAA D2 and NCAA D1 all at various times between 1959-1982. I'm assuming that is a HBCU thing as divisions don't really seem to matter in that portion of the collegiate world. What is clear...ish is that he started NAIA and ended in D2.

The award being named after him likely has something to do with his institution, and the conference of the institution, ended up at this level after he left.

I suppose if you want to include him in the list of best FCS backs, so be it. Knock ya boi down another slot.

Quick look at the team shows that the talent is there for another playoff run.

Offense
QB: Return AA Kyle Lauletta who will be learning his 4th playbook in 5 years
RB: Return Starter JR Gordon Collins who was lost to injury during the NSU win, Soph Xavier Goodall who was lost to injury in the Albany win, Soph Deontez Thompson who rushed for over 1000yds as a freshman 3rd string running back
WR: Lose AA and record owner Brian Brown, Return All CAA Tyler Wilkins and Jarmal Bevels
F/H: Lose All CAA James Pavik, Look for JR TE Stephon Jacob to take those snaps.
TE: Return All CAA TE Garret Hudson
OL: Returning Starting OL Alex light, Marius Young, John Yarbrough, Patrick Kliebert, this group could change very much by the season end

Defense: Interesting unit as they are transitioning from Rocco's 3-4 to a projected 4-2-5 with Huesman
DL: Lose AA Winston Craig, Return All CAA Brandon Waller, Andrew Clyde, Chad Wiggins and Deanthony Muse
LB: Lose AA Omar Howard and other Starters, Look for young players like Justin Rubin to make a bigger impact
DB: Lost AA S David Jones in the Albany win, Return All CAA S Brendan Coniker and Corners JJ Jordan, Tafon Mainsah, and Micah Keels

All the above were starters or players that earned major playing time. Many pieces, just need to come together and stay healthy. Early test at Sam Houston should ease some voters minds about them come playoff time xlolx

Both David Johnson and Zack Zenner are better than any RB I saw from JMU. I would say even John Crockett ( Packers injury reserve) is better. Both DJ and ZZ are freaking NFL starters, people have no idea what they are talking about. That JMU RB might be 4-5th round and then sit as 3rd RB as a best case. He certainly isn't a top 15 draft, and I bet neither the Cardinals or the Lions would give those guys up for a top 15 draft pick.

Russ Huesman seems to have a clear preference for a dual threat QB. Wondering if he will adjust to having a more traditional pocket passer in Lauletta, or expect his QB to make most the adjustment?

It certainly helps having a mobile QB in a spread but there are plenty of examples of non-mobile QBs succeeding. Yes, it eliminates the threat of the QB run reads but having a QB as talented as Lauletta opens up the run game in other ways.

Richmond ran a 3-3-5. Won't be much of a change.

Yeah they just didn't bud. They ran a traditional 3-4 base package that could shift into a 3-4 over front. All D-lineman two gapped and the linebackers played off of those blocks. A 4-2-5 has a completely different philosophy with penetrating, single gap D-lineman which completely changes the LB read as they typically cover the weak side A and strong side B. The 5th DB behaves as a in the box safety generally operating at depth around the 2 receiver, covering the hook/curl, field or boundary. That is just the philosophical changes. Rocco recruited players for his defense and those players are different than players recruited for a 4-2-5 or a 4-3 defense, so yes there is a significant change.

Probably splitting hairs but everyone I talked to at the game called it a 3-3-5. I read it was called a 3-3-5 by a media member. If someone wants to say that is a 3-4 I guess they could on certain downs.

This is the next stage of the SWAC's 7-game IC schedule and we can schedule 3-4 OOC games @ will.

For Prairie View A&M University, we are going pro-SLC fall 2017: SHSU, IWU, and SELA. Our 4th game is against an NAIA school (homecoming).

We're still gaining traction and our midyear txfer list proves where we need(ed) help.

You're thoughts on Comegy going into year four? I know he's won everywhere else he's won (more or less, even if the places didn't think it was enough) and as at the better funded/supported programs, and winning in Itta Bena is, well, difficult. However, he is 64 years old and the team doesn't even look remotely close to being competitive, and seems to be going the other way. Last season we were outscored 154-504 (average score of 14-56). It's getting worse every year. We've gone from 2-9, and outscored by 107, in Morgan's last year to being 2-9 in Comegy's but being outscored by 216 points. Were 1-10 in 2015 and outscored by 331 points. Last year it was 1-10 and outscored by 351 points.

The team netting just 275 yards rushing last year, at .8 yards per carry. Granted, take sacks out of the equation and we actually double our rushing total up to 547 yards. Even getting to "slightly below average" for running the ball gets us significantly closer in most games. Our passing game isn't good, but it was meh when were weren't throwing picks (Granted, that's not often).

I hope Briscoe's arm and the heart of the rest of the team returns. Other than that, PJ Hall is pretty good and every starting offensive skill position player returns....not that it matters because we're soft and and don't beat anybody in the playoffs. Oh, except for reaching at least the quarterfinals almost every year and the semis and finals occasionally. How deep has UNI made it recently, Clenz?

Been to the beach today? Because you're pretty salty.

Coach Comegy is a great recruiter and I do believe he's very good @ assembling braintrust (assts) around him that made (makes) his teams go. One cannot deny his success when resources are available. MVSU is decently resource-laden so imho, they are actually playing well, considering the lack of $$$$$ support they sport (lowest athl budget in the SWAC).

We need a home and home with you guys. We are playing at Alcorn St. next season and I'm sure there will be a return game to Cowboy Stadium. It was a nice trip the last time we went to Alcorn.

Doc, when the heavy machinery hit campus to tear down the old deal, we were told that Mac would open up our new deal the following season(2 yrs past our last visit to LC). Naturally all of that changed w/ coaching changes, etc. I'm sure @ some point soonest the relationship w/ Mac will be reignited. It makes sense and CENTS for Mac and PVAMU to compete. It makes sense and CENTS for PVAMU to schedule w/ local SLCers, as well as a tx-FBSer here and there as required (SMU, UNT, Rice, UTEP, SHSU the FBS-wolf in FCS clothing xlolx lol).

EWU's losing Cooper Kupp...so...we're gonna suck next year. :D

I'll disagree with you on this. We loose three really good receivers but there are still a couple of kids, Stiles and Sblendorio that have and can perform. Also some nice recruits coming in. O-line will be Sophomores and Juniors next year. I think we'll have a legitimate running game develop as they mature. The D is getting better, we loose some good kids over there but Beau's coaching philosophy gives lots of kids playing times so the cupboard is not bare. My biggest concern is leadership. Coop led that team last year in all aspects. Fact is we only graduated 12 seniors, most of them were major contributors but we bring back a lot of experience.

Absolutely! My comment was entirely tongue in cheek. Personally, I expect next falls team to be even better than this year's for many of the same reasons you noted. I thing Custer will begin to rise as a playmaker in the running game, and the offense will be more balanced, and more effective, if you can imagine that. I think losing Ebukam, Zamora, and Bruce in particular are huge losses in the defensive side of the ball, but we will see the defense at least hold serve, if not improve next year. And we are stacked on receivers and QBs. It sucks to lose Cooper's abilities and leadership, but I think Beau Baldwin will have our team mindset in the right place, and the culture that's been established will continue.

YSU will be pretty much the same team minus the running backs, 9-11(DEs) and the two safety's. Early recruiting looks promising and their is a buzz about a few JUCO's an a transfer or two?!

Title mix is the usual suspects!!

Folmar following the Lembo route? Why would leave Lehigh for Elon for the same gig? He would have got a FCS head coaching job with one more big year from the offense. Strange move.

Coen has certainly dealt with his fare share of staff turnover during his tenure. This is a bit of hit but given the experience coming back and Coen's background as an OC I think they'll be fine in 2017. Folmar was never going to hang around too long so Andy had to be somewhat prepared for this.

I heard one of the reasons he may have chose Elon is because there new coach from IUP used to be a WR coach at Bama. Possibly a quicker route up the coaching ladder. At this stage, Coen's OC experience isn't going to make an impact, he's been out of calling plays for a long time now. The question will be if Brisson can step up. He's a real good guy, met him many times. Hoping for the best.
