View Full Version : Mid-year transfers

BEAR

It's almost that time! I think those mid-year guys come in to your programs in about a week.

Last year UCA took in 7 mid year transfers and all contributed greatly toward the program.

Micah Parten 6-2 300 OL
Conner Wood 6-6 300 OL
Chandler Dexter 6-6 255 TE
James Graves 6-1 235 LB
Jaylon Lofton 6-1 180 CB
Austin McIntosh 5-11 200 Long Snapper
Patrick Ponder 6-1 190 Punter

Can't wait to see who Campbell brings in this year!

Any ideas on who YOUR team might be getting?!

Houston Chron. reported

Backup nickel corner J.J. Dallas has left the Houston football program for personal reasons, coach Tom Herman said Wednesday.
"He wants to go do something else," Herman said. "I don't know what he wants to do. He just doesn't want to be here."
Dallas, a Corpus Christi native, joined UH as part of this year's signing class after playing one season at Blinn College. He was rated the No. 9 junior college cornerback by ESPN.
The departure means Katy's Collin Wilder will likely play as a true freshman. Herman also indicated the Cougars have multiple options to move people around if the need arises.

Either we are not getting any JC signees this year or the McNeese is treating it like top secret information. Of course, we usually never hear about regular transfers until almost August camp.

In bad news, the rumor is that Isiah Golden is leaving early to try to catch on with a CFL team.

McNeese to play at Alcorn State in 2017

Slowly, McNeese State’s 2017 football schedule is trickling out.

The Cowboys will play at Alcorn State on Sept. 16, the third ever meeting between the two schools. McNeese has won each of the two previous games, played as part of a home-and-home series in 2000 and 2001.

He has a family and I suppose he thinks the CFL will give him some a paycheck and a possible route to the NFL if he is successful. Otherwise he needed to bring it in the FCS next year to have any chance.

Yea...this isn't exactly our situation, but something like this. We had talent in a lot of places, but no depth on defense. Coach Fisher has been working on getting some quality transfers from other DI schools doing the grad transfer thing to help fill in holes for a year while he gets his freshman recruits into place. Last year we had Steve Mercado from Lafayette, this year we're getting a TE from Syracuse (https://twitter.com/T91D_/status/808689138690048004?lang=en), a kicker from Bowling Green (https://twitter.com/samcrosa10/status/801510653777346560?lang=en) (not a grad transfer), and likely a couple of other grad transfers that are visiting this weekend and still making their decisions (including one guy who is listed in this article: http://bigsouthsports.com/news/2016/11/22/FB_1122160123.aspx?path=football). So, in this case it's really just filling in gaps with short-term quality guys until his coaching staff's new recruits are ready.

Actually that is the right way to do it if you're going to take junior college transfers. Better to have them on campus for a semester and available for spring practice than simply showing up for August camp. One can argue the merits and pitfalls of signing junior college players, but what works for some may not work for others. Each program is different.

Montana has turned the roster pretty much over the last three years due to last coaches recruits (a little exaggerated).

I think we hit bottom this year, as we were on our 4th coach in the last 8 years, but should see the Griz start to make the trek back to consistency this year.

We were are at our worst in years, but still have beaten NDSU, SDSU and UNI the last two and lost some we shouldn't have.

We had a coach that took himself out of involvement in coaching three years before he left. Screwed the team and the fans. I watched him walk the sidelines at practice bored out of his freakin mind and he had that look of "I don't want to be here". He left and is doing the same to his new team. It does take a few years and some transfers to get the ship righted.

Grad School guys occasionally but all Freshman start in the Fall as Knobs. All Cadets must be a Knob. You can't transfer in as an upperclassman and avoid the 4th Class System and nobody is going from being a Knob to a Senior. So no mid years and no Juco's.

Update on the "one guy who is listed..." that I mentioned above.

Lucas Holder, 6'4" and 295lb O-lineman, grad transfer from Liberty University
Started all but the final game last year for Liberty. Was named 2nd-Team All-Conference in the Big South last year as well as receiving their Scholar-Athlete of the Year award: http://bigsouthsports.com/news/2016/11/22/FB_1122160123.aspx?path=football
He will be working on an MBA while playing his final year of eligibility for Western.

Also had offers from Stephen F. Austin, East Tennessee State, and Duquesne.

Anthony Giudice, a 6-2, 275 lb. defensive tackle, has transferred to Lafayette from Syracuse. He played in eight games for the Orange as a true freshman and six games as a sophomore (with one recorded sack).

http://i63.tinypic.com/2a0j3uc.jpg

The Lafayette board confirms that Giudice is enrolled for the spring semester. This is an uncommon (though not wholly unprecedented) occasion for our humble little corner of the FCS world. Giudice comes from (the über-haughty) Old Avon Farms prep in Connecticut (which, unlike getting FBS transfers, is typically Lafayette). The new coaching regime in Easton, under John Garrett, Rich Bartel and Luke Thompson, seems to want a few changes on College Hill. This should help.

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/sports/college/story/2017/may/06/former-ridgeland-star-bridges-play-hfinal-col/426698/

"The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Bridges had 513 carries for 2,182 yards and 12 touchdowns in his Blue Hose career and finished second, 450 yards from first, in career yardage. In 2015 he had 1,065 yards and eight touchdowns, earning first-team All-Big South honors. He added 721 yards and a pair of scores in 2016, accounting for 65 percent of the rushing yards and 30 percent of the total offense for a Presbyterian team that finished 2-9 and 1-4 in the Big South."

"Chatt's program is also one of the top-tier (FCS) programs in the nation," he said. "I believe that in order to be the best possible player I could be for my final year, I would have to surround myself with great players, and this program has repeatedly proven they have the talent to win and win consistently."

'Bridges had 2,430 yards and 39 touchdowns in his senior season at Ridgeland, helping the Panthers to the Georgia Class AAAA state final. UTC had a strong interest in him but ultimately chose Derrick Craine, who finished his career with 2,997 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns (fifth and second, respectively, in school history) and was a 2016 All-American despite missing time with injury."

Kobie Lain, Kenny Carter’s first quarterback recruit at Delaware State, announced he is transferring to Southern University for the final two years of his collegiate career.

Lain signed with the Hornets two years ago as Carter’s first recruiting class. He appeared in five games as a true freshman and started two, including the only victory of that season in the final game of the year where he had a rushing touchdown.

But Lain didn’t win the starting job for his sophomore season. He played in five contests but did not record a touchdown.

He finished the season with with 135 passing yards and was 17-of-32 passing attempts with an interception.

It'll be interesting to see what DSU does at the QB spot now. Does Keenan Black take the helm or does Shayne Smith incoming recruits Nasir or Jack step up and become the 2017 starter. Whoever is the starter will be pretty much a rookie under center when they open the season in Newark. Not to mention DSU signed up for 2 money games, 1 in West Virginia and the other in Tallahassee.

Hahahahaha I can't disagree with you they are the bottom dwellers of the MEAC and most of FCS football. Hard to sell recruits on their program with their history as well as pretty small facilities. Especially when you can play in Newark in front of 18-22k fans in a top tier FCS conference. Wouldn't be surprised if after the 2017 their Soph. RB Mike Waters transferred out to another program and just sat out 2018 as part of the NCAA transfer rules.

You're assuming those schools were in need of a QB and that he could potentially play there. StFU had a three year starter just graduate and have a red-shirt sophomore who played only a handful of snaps last year slated to start this fall. My guess is he was promised a chance to compete for the starting spot and a chance to play. It looks as if he never saw the field at Houston, so perhaps playing time is what is driving this.

Makes sense I'm just thinking why travel across country when there are plenty of other FCS schools and even D2 schools in the region that could probably could offer him a chance to compete and play. Sitting 3 years at Houston after being the "Man" in high school had to be rough so I can't knock him for choosing SFU if indeed they said he'd have a great shot at being the starter.

Even so, kids choose schools for all sorts of reasons--maybe he has a girl friend at SFU or relatives who live nearby or SFU offers a major that attracted him or any number of other possibilities. Whatever his reason, wish him all the best and hope it is all he imagined it would be.

I don't remember VMI ever getting two in one off-season.....usually it's one about every 6-7 years.......

Yes, and all three still have to go thru the Rat Line........(awaiting CitDog's input )

Dang, day late and dollar short in my world. Of course, I could've actually read the post before mine I guess? BTW, it would be nice for you to join us in Greenville for the AGS get together Aug 19. I am always the only WCU person there.

Should be an interesting August camp in Newark with the arrival of Caruso as he competes with Walker, Clements & Kehoe for the starting position.

hopefully it will only be interesting for a few practices and Curaso becomes the obvious choice
