30 for 30 Short - Holy Cross' Gordie Lockbaum

I saw this on ESPN, and thought it was pretty cool. It's an ESPN 30 for 30 Short about Gordie Lockbaum who played both ways at Holy Cross, and was twice a Heisman Trophy finalist. The film is about 11 minutes long.

Sometime during COVID, I got in the habit of watching ESPN documentaries for my bike and treadmill workouts.

ESPN finally put the Lockbaum short on my "Recommended for You" list. Why it took them so long to do so is an interesting question.

In any event, I enjoyed it very much! A pity it wasn't longer, but it was great seeing the footage of him playing!

As I recall, he was one of five players invited to the Heisman Trophy presentation his Senior year. I don't think he got it, but I don't know of any other 1AA player being a finalist. Since the late Steve McNair, the only FCS players who I think would've sniffed even an outside chance of being invited to the Heisman ceremony would have been Adrian Peterson (Georgia Southern) and Armanti Edwards (App State). And I don't recall either even for sure getting votes at all.

While not FCS but still non-P5 relevant, I thought the Heisman committee ruined a chance for a cool story a few years back when Keenan Reynolds (Navy QB) broke the NCAA career record for TDs and finished 5th in the voting but didn't get invited to NY. They should have at least invited the top 5 guys to the ceremony that year, as Reynolds hopping in a naval helicopter after the Army-Navy game would have been epically cool. But didn't happen of course.

Maybe Greg Pruitt (who also returned Punts & Kickoffs - can’t find those stats for ‘71) or Jack Mildren were robbed or maybe Jack Mildren robbed Greg Pruitt, TBH.

Marinaro’s YPA (vs. Ivy League competition as opposed to SEC & Big 8) was the lowest among any of the contending RB’s, and even lower than 1 of the contending QB’s (Mildren). Think that’s what hurt his voting results in the SE & SW regions.
