Bittersweet… but it was the right thing to do. Bruce is a great man, and bleeds purple. But he couldn't get his teams to every play with any consistency.

Hopefully Brian Bratton will be the hold-over from the current staff. Players like him, and if we hope to hold on to commit Cam Burnette Bratton is pretty critical.

Early thoughts on candiates???
Clay Hendrix - Air Force
Ashley Ingram - Navy
Chadwell -CSU

I hope we see Furman integrate more option. I don't want to see another defensive minded head coach.

Probably needed to be done though I am a little surprised as Fowlers teams tended to finish strong which makes it harder to let them go, but it seemed like he started 0-4 or worse yearly.

I do not want to see another SoCon option team, 2 is one too many already.

Clay Hendrix would have the best shot out of the group, IMO, unless the admin wants to stay completely away from anyone with prior Furman ties. Which I don't think they will.

I don't see Chadwell. I do think Hendrix is possible. Rumor is the family would like to get back home. But it is a rumor

I believe Furman lost it's Mojo when Clay left for Air Force. Clay is a tough son-of-a-b!tch! What Clay would bring back is toughness. The OL under Hendrix was IMO as physical as you'll ever see at the FCS level.

I would love to see some future Hendrix vs Ayers matchups.

If we're going to dream… dream even bigger!
Billy Napier - Alabama (played at FU)
Tony Elliott - Clemson (coached at FU)
Rhett Lashlee - Auburn (coached at Samford)

While I don't want to necessarily see Furman run a Paul Jonson style option attack, I love Air Force's offense. Perhaps my favorite offensive set in college football.

Just bring Jeff Farrington and his staff over from North Greenville. They've done nothing but win ever since they arrived in Tigerville, turning NG, a former JC, into a damn good D2 team. Guys don't even have to look at property. Citadel alum who coached at Furman once upon a time. Just sayin..........

What's a little surprising is that it's been two weeks since their last game. Why did they take so long to do the deed? A deed that pretty much everyone expected for the last month.

He resigned. They might have fired him, but they were probably giving him time.

It's not going to take whoever gets the job at Furman to get it off the ground. Their is quite a bit of talent currently on the roster. It's going to depend a lot on what kind of system the coach is going to implement on offense and defense.I think their is a good foundation for whomever inherents the program.

If I am an FCS school looking to hire a good football coach I am looking down to the Division II level and pulling up somebody whose hot. It worked for CSU and The Citadel.

FURMAN probably won't do this.

Furman's AD hints that it's possibly time to look outside the Furman family coaching tree in today's Greenville News.

Farrington was a former DC at ETSU for a few years prior to moving to Furman. If Torbush rides off into the sunset and we miss out on Chadwell, Farrington would make for a nice consolation prize.

Furman AD Mike Buddie is not tied to the Furman tree, he's a Wake Forest guy. It seems his filter for the job will be a coach from a similar background as Furman (academic focus). Buddie also mentioned doesn't have to have be a headcoach.

While I think Buddie is more apt than his predecessor to look outside the Furman coaching tree, he's already indicated a willingness to stay in it with his first major hire (Brett Harker). Besides, the Furman coaching tree is gigantic with quality coaches at just about every level of football.

Some of our fan base has become negative nancy about the whole thing, but I bet Mike Buddie will have a whole lot of interest in this job. Furman's not the best D1 college football job, but it is far from the worst.

For me, I still think the job should be Clay Hendrix's if he wants it.

He has never recruited at a high APR school. That would be a question mark that Furman might not want to take a chance on.
