For me it's because the teams below them haven't done much to impress either. I couldn't justify putting them below Samford considering Chatty beat them by 20 earlier in the season.

BTW this is a great top 6 this year, what a great diversity of conference leaders at the top of our subdivision:

1: North Dakota State Bison - MVFC
2: Eastern Washington Eagles - Big Sky
3: James Madison Dukes - CAA
4: The Citadel Bulldogs - Socon
5: Jacksonville State Gamecocks - OVC
6: I expect this spot to be taken by the winner of UCA/SHSU - SLC.

Will be a tough year for seeding for sure. If SHSU wins, the top 6 are pretty much sealed but depending on the eye of the beholder, could be in a billion different combinations. If they lose, It just becomes the top 5 (sorry UCA though you get a seed). Still, would find it pretty cool to have JMU/ El Cid on the 4/5 line

NDSU is susceptible to the pass. Also, I think all those championships have made them complacent. I really don't think they care.

EWU is susceptible to over confidence. Also, I think Kooper Kupp is overrated. And their defense couldn't stop a rolling beach ball.

Nope NDSU's DBs are awesome now. You are confusing the current NDSU team with the early season NDSU team. As with the last 5 years (except 2013), early season NDSU and novemeber/december/january NDSU are different.

I don't buy the susceptible to the pass thing for NDSU as a flaw. A weakness maybe, but they were still able to overcome it and beat one of the best passing offenses in the division.

If ND comes to Fargo in the 2nd round, do you think that they get blown out or its a very competitive game. I would imagine there would be a minor meltdown amongst Bison fans if they were upset by ND. If SDSU beat them, I think it would be easier for them to accept. **Note, I think NDSU wins it all, just speculating.

Better, still not where we want to be. We aren't even opening up the full offense right now. Stick is limited in passing.

Depends on the refs honestly.

The higher the refs have been graded the less penalties NDSU seems to get.

Still a few blocking/holding calls dependent on the refs.

a few personal fouls.

(revision) I think it would be competitive, but I think the game favors NDSU substantially.

I think there is still a sizable talent gap between NDSU and UND. That doesn't mean UND couldn't win. It would probably be a game with less than 40 points scored total.

There are plenty of teams that will be in the playoff bracket that NDSU will be very capable of blowing out.

Professor Chaos
November 14th, 2016, 12:34 PM
NDSU's pass defense has definitely progressed from earlier in the season. However, the pass offense seems to have regressed. That could be partially due to the fact that they haven't needed to throw the ball much since they've been bulldozing teams with the run game over the last month. It's hard to get much going in the passing game when you throw it less than 15 times a game. Let's just say I'm not supremely confident that the NDSU passing game could survive another EWU like shootout that they did in September.

The pass game seems to have gotten worse, but the run game has improved A LOT which probably accounts for at least some of the regression in the pass game.

If UND comes into Fargo, I believe they end up going back to Grand Forks with their tail between their legs and their posters gone from AGS for awhile.

NDSU has been constantly playing against the Top 20 teams in the country all year. They may be a young, but seasoned bunch, and anyone that's been paying attention the last 6 years knows that NDSU in the postseason is completely different from NDSU in the first few weeks of the year.

Hard to tell with how limited we are in passing. Stick is over thinking his throws, and throwing late. Cole Davis might be a better passer right now.

Absolutely true, but UND is pretty good this year and NDSU has atrophied some.

- - - Updated - - -

It's cute that you can do that. I do not think we have saved anything. The conference is too tough.
Yeah there's been a lot of packages and plays that we've seen over the season used briefly but our offense 98% of the time is just run people over and deep shots. We leaned on our defense so far since no one has really truly threatened us. And it works in the OVC so I'm pretty sure is Grass is saving the big guns for when they're needed.

Grass has done it in the past before, most notably in the Auburn game last year.

Of course I could be delusional and our offense is actually broken but it always seems that if we get into a true pinch our offense does have an ability to answer and answer quickly.

We shall see soon enough I suppose.

Then they should have won their games. If you can't be gardner webb I'm not convinced you can beat any of those teams other than Lehigh and NC A&T, maybe chat. Just in my opinion the FCS ranks hiccups too heavy. I've seen good teams drop 15+ spots on here just because of a week where a good team came out uninspired. Does it make it right? No. If that's the case then Pitt is better than Clemson and Clemson should drop out of the Top 10 cause they can't beat Pitt.

Idk how a 2 point loss to a rival team in the running for a playoff seed is a devastating loss.

That's the point. In last weeks NCAA FCS release discussing the playoff committee rankings the article called the NDSU loss to SDSU a "DEVASTATING" loss to justify NDSU not being ranked higher. My guess is the comment in the article came from someone on the committee or someone working with the committee. If that's the mindset of the committee SDSU will be nowhere near a seed and NDSU will not be top 2.

Idk, I read that more as the author making the assumption that this was why NDSU was at #3 behind JSU and EWU. When the initial rankings came out and Hutchinson (selection committee chair) went on his Fargo radio tour he surmised that the reason why NDSU was where they were at was because they "recently" lost to SDSU (of course he didn't know because the committee hadn't actually discussed the rankings yet at that time xrolleyesx). That's now been 4 games ago so I can't really see how they can claim it as a recent loss justifying a lack of momentum or something like that.

I always hated the argument that when a loss happens should factor into where or if a team is seeded. I think SDSU was burned by that last year losing to WIU in week 12. Had they lost to WIU in week 8 and reeled off 4 straight after that they probably would've been seeded which is silly to me because their resume would've looked the exact same as it did with the week 12 loss the way it played out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that article from the Grand Forks Herald? I think it may have more to do with trying to gain relevance for a certain other school than actually be a quote from the committee.

I think NDSU matches up well with UND. I'd be more nervous about them having to face a team like SDSU.

UND feels the same way about NDSU as compared to EWU. Both UND and NDSU are built to run the ball and stop the run. Could be a slugfest.

Unless they come in dirty hoping to take out our players.

Really, this again? There was one dirty hit in the game last year and it was committed by a bizun POS.

Just out of curiosity..there's a lot of talk about "Novemberists" or "People not coming back for a while" etc. on here.

What exactly would draw someone to post on the AGS board if : A. Your team is out of the running or B: Your team does not play in the Big Sky or MVFC ?

I mean, almost every team has its own fan forum for off-season talk. Why is it that you guys think people are "Scared" or "intimidated" to post on here once their team loses in the playoffs or season ends etc?

Has anyone considered that maybe, just maybe..outside of an ongoing football season that includes their team, that there's not really anything worthwhile to discuss once you're done? Let alone anyone worthwhile to discuss it with?

It's kind of like the smelly kid in school that people sit next to in class cuz they have to, but at lunch, sit far...far away. At some point you have to realize that..well...no one really likes being around you bro...sorry for that.

A lot of teams (SHSU included back in '11/'12) fans come here, talk smack and throw out baseless claims, then never come back after their team losses.

They then return again the next year during the playoffs, only to watch their team get smacked again. It gets annoying to siphon through a bunch of gibberish posts about people that don't bring any discussion.

This is a great question right now. The JMU board seemed to think it was a broken collar bone with a minimum of 3-6 weeks. Coach Houston came out with some coach speak about returning quickly. Is that so no one knows who to prepare for, or is the injury not as bad as described?

I think the Chattanooga loss is very significant because they were a seeded team for sure. IMHO the Charleston Southern win was the most impressive because if they lost their season was over.

It is interesting that they pulled that article from NCAA.com (old link now just says "Page not found") but here it is from a different link: http://bismannews.rrvnews.com/link/113150_college-football-rankings-schedules-a-factor-in-2nd-fcs-committee-poll

It's not too difficult to see one part of the justification: the top four teams have all played FBS teams. Jacksonville State and James Madison lost to LSU and North Carolina, respectively, two losses that there is absolutely no shame in. Eastern Washington beat Washington State, a team currently ranked No. 23 in the College Football Playoff rankings, while North Dakota State beat Iowa but did go on to suffer a damaging loss to South Dakota State.
.
.
.
One of the most common criticisms last week was Eastern Washington's ranking ahead of North Dakota State despite the Bison winning that matchup head-to-head. That remains the case this week despite both teams moving up, as the Committee clearly saw NDSU's loss to South Dakota State to be a critical blow.

Like I said earlier, I read those "damaging loss" and "critical blow" comments to be the perspective of the author and not straight from the horse's mouth of the selection committee.

SHSU #6? now this poll is garbage... xlolx

You may have missed the emoticon, Prof. But still... AGS had SHSU at #6 the previous week too.

As has been said many times... the beauty of the FCS is that we get to see how it all unfolds on the field. The committee historically has had a few head-scratchers here and there, but generally have done a pretty good job. Assuming we believe the AGS poll is the "best" one, and we know that the committee's playoff selections usually align more closely with the AGS poll than any other, it must logically follow that the committee does a pretty good job.

I will let it go then xrotatehx

Will be a tough year for seeding for sure. If SHSU wins, the top 6 are pretty much sealed but depending on the eye of the beholder, could be in a billion different combinations. If they lose, It just becomes the top 5 (sorry UCA though you get a seed). Still, would find it pretty cool to have JMU/ El Cid on the 4/5 line

Billion? Try 720. Insert quip about JMU education here.

(just pulling your chain ;) )

If ND comes to Fargo in the 2nd round, do you think that they get blown out or its a very competitive game. I would imagine there would be a minor meltdown amongst Bison fans if they were upset by ND. If SDSU beat them, I think it would be easier for them to accept. **Note, I think NDSU wins it all, just speculating.

You have just broken the internet for understatement. If NDSU loses to UND in the playoffs we won't have to worry about global warming as the screams of outrage from Bison fans will knock the Earth out of its orbit and fling us into the inky void.

NDSU is susceptible to the pass. Also, I think all those championships have made them complacent. I really don't think they care.

EWU is susceptible to over confidence. Also, I think Kooper Kupp is overrated. And their defense couldn't stop a rolling beach ball.

Calmed down....just a little good-natured trolling.

I am telling you, 6-2 stack monster on D all day long, and forget about running the ball on offense, go 5 wide, spread the field and throw quick routes, less that 2 seconds before the ball gets out of the QB's hand and you can punch your ticket.

Well that's my point - I don't think he would say Bryan will be back this season and mean anything other than our first game in the playoffs, possibly even this week.

Wow, i guess i read it differently. i took it to mean that he's telling the truth as long as he's able to play by early January. I would love to have misinterpreted that and you're right.

So can you offer a lad some advice? What's there to talk about after the season? Give me some direction so that a brother can bring some good stuff to the table.

Politics, guns, music and bitches, those topics are always gold

exactly how i would do the top 8 as well. some INCREDIBLE matchups if those were the seeds: NDSU/SDSU rematch, EWU/Richmond fireworks, JMU/SHSU (Keeler against his old nemesis)

Whoa there. Get a hold of that cart. You really believe that this year all 8 of the seeds will win their first game? xcrazyx

Just kidding...I don't really care. We've sucked things up pretty badly the last two weeks. I'm honestly surprised we're still in the top 25, but I guess 25-40 must be pretty weak right now or something.

RE: Schor and JMU dropping. I think it will all hinge on what the committee thinks of Villanova (and specifically Villanova's offense against our defense). We were missing Schor most of that game and still pulled out a two score win. Very small sample size and all on our - to that point - suspect defense, but it's all they got. And as someone pointed out on another thread, last year they didn't seem to penalize us on Vad Lee's injury.

Villanova's offense has proven to be non-existant against the better teams on their schedule. Didn't score @ Pitt (defensive TD only score), zip @ Richmond, & 7 against JMU. Adding insult to injury is the offense has horrific turnovers that puts a pretty good to great defense in red zone situations a lot.

The offense operates in a vacuum. This team shouldn't be using failed trick special team plays or going for it constantly on 4th & short around the 50. Punt the ball & make the opponent go 80-90 yards against a very quick & active defense.

John Robertson is gone. Our QB is still developing & is as up & down as a roller coaster. Our OL has also been inconsistent most of the season.

I'm surprised Nova DC hasn't pulled a Buddy Ryan & clocked the OC by now.

Im sure this has been answered before, but does anyone know if the people on the selection committee get paid to be on it?

Sure they do, but it is in small unmarked bills in plain white envelopes passed to them under a table :D
