Apologies if this was posted elsewhere, but it looks like STATS has gotten the rights for their awards to officially be the Payton, Buchanan, Rice, and Robinson Awards again.

For those that aren't aware, when STATS bought SportsNetwork (the group that did the awards before), the rights to the award names didn't go with it at first. At one point there was just some random other guy doing the Payton award last year, for example. That's why last year's awards were just the FCS Offensive/Defensive/Freshman Player of the Year awards and the Coach of the Year Award.

But now they'll have the "right" names again.

What happened with the names originally?

Personally I never stopped calling them the Walter Payton award, etc.

STATS bought out TSN. The names were held by a third party and weren't included in the sale. They had to negotiate them separately and after a year were able to attain the rights to them.

Wasn't that third party someone who worked at TSN?

I don't know, but he had a really bad website for it (I make websites...it's kinda my thing).
Almost as bad as a mid-90's Geocities site. I wouldn't really consider it "legit" even though the guy technically owned the rights to the name.

I wonder if STATS will ever add specialist awards like the Lou Groza and Ray Guy Awards for the FBS kickers and punters.
