Actually, I thought Furmans defense was really really good, and Hannon is a good QB. It seems to be injuries that get Furman every year. I wonder if there are problems with strength and conditioning? It wouldn't seem like any program would be that un lucky when it comes to injuries.

1. Chattanooga > Mercer
___A. Craine is the real deal. Hope his injury was not serious.
___B. Bennifield is solid.
___C. WR's are excellent Players.
___D. D has LB's and DB's that can bring it - could hear the POPS in the stands.
___E. Chatt's Players play hard and Coach Huesman coaches with class
2. Great Environment
___A. Good Crowd - seemed like more than the stated attendance
___B. Tailgated their butts off pre-game & post - Mostly hospitable folks.
___C. Lots of Chatt fans wearing orange today though...with "T's" on them - kinda strange
3. Officials did a good job - not perfect, but...
___A. The White Hat (Larry Saunders) overruled several of the usual awful calls and kept things square - Very glad to see that; I really can respect a guy TRYING to get it right more than worrying about making his crew look bad.
___B. If the White Hats in Mercer's prior 2 games (Larry Adcock (TTU) and Edwin Lee (VMI)) had run the show as Mr. Saunders did today, I would have had no complaint.
3. Looking forward to next week vs. WCU
4. Chatt @ El Cid should be a good one. Assuming Craine is OK, my money is on the Mocs

Craine is an amazing back. He plays much bigger than his size and has deceptive speed. I think he is ok, the doctors released him to go back in the game but Huesman said no. We will need him 100% next week.

I was kind of disappointed at the crowd as the Mocs are undefeated, ranked #3 and it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately UTK is also having a good year and we have trouble competing with them (as you noticed). To be honest you see much less orange than you did 10 years ago.

Mercer is a good team that is well coached. You guys brought a nice crowd up for the game probably more than any SoCon team. I need to get down to Macon for a game sometime.

So I started a bit of a 5#;t storm by calling the WCU/Woffy game the SoCon GOTW and "overlooking the mighty bears vs the Mocs....and my opinion was a reflection of the players and coaches "looking to next week"......well after sitting through the very one sided UTC game and watching much of the WCU/Woffy game (which was more competitive than the 13 point differential).....I feel vindicated about my original Game of The Week statement....anybody want to disagree?

As far as the incident goes.... yes one fan did that, it may have been Chattown....not sure... and it was in retaliation to your players taunting and flipping off the fans (also what Huesman was so upset about). Now, as far as the locker room goes, it was already discussed on here, and determined by the people that actually played (and saw your picture) that tape on the ground in a locker room doesn't constitute a "trashed facility". Nice try, keep trolling.

Every fan base has a personality it seems. Mercer's fans seem to be very sensitive that they aren't being given enough respect. If the Carebears since any slight whatsoever, they all come screaming about that one time they upset someone. We get it, they won last year. It was a fluke. Yesterday proved that the Carebears don't belong on the same field as the Mocs. I'm sorry guys. Hopefully you can work through this with years of therapy.

They've always had short man syndrome and started talking junk almost immediately to WCU. That's fine. And then the worst team in the conference from 2006-2013 beat them in 2014 and 2015 and it's killed them. Well congrats care bears, 2016 is the year you finally beat us considering our porous defense. Pat yourself on the back that you beat the SoCon's worst team.xcoffeex

I thought our crowd was pretty good, but not as big as 2014 when several student buses and the band came. Maybe being fall break Thursday and Friday impacted that. You should come to Mercer for a game. We have a place set aside for visiting tailgaters that is right next to the stadium.

Don't try to take the high road now just because you guys lost. Your people whined and cried all week about not getting enough respect. Apparently you were getting too much respect based on how the game turned out. You Carebears are the most over-sensitive bunch I have ever seen. Sounds pretty nice, actually. But I was pretty happy with the crowd Mercer brought. Obviously not the same as two years ago, but also not the same vibe in the program. I actually think that was more about scheduling, fall schedules, and resources as opposed to excitement being down since Year 1. This year, Georgia Tech was our first FBS game since the reboot (and we obviously have a ton of alumni in Atlanta), but the school subsidized 1200 students being bussed up to Atlanta for the GT game, and I think the total ticket sales to Mercer people, not including the 1200 students, was in the 6K-7K range.

I think it's tough to do that multiple times in a year.

As far as the "whining" and or "complaining about respect" stuff goes. Just stop. Mercer people don't bitch, moan, or complain and more or any less than any of the rest of you cha cha's on here.

However, I think there are plenty that would prefer the "new/newer" kids on the block just not say anything at all. Screw that. What other reason do you even have to be on message boards in the first place if it isn't to talk about your team and be supportive of it? Well, I take that back slightly, because I do see plenty that don't support their team at all. This is just a forum for them to throw their own programs under the bus and/or advocate the firing of coaching staffs. But, regardless, fire away. Don't care. Not really looking for outside "respect". Just lovin' my Bears.

No they do whine for respect more than anyone else, because they don't really have much cause they're new. But it's annoying and you have to whine cause you don't have much for the W column yet. Respect is earned not complained for.

See, that might just be a difference of opinion about attitude. Because I think no matter how long a team has been around, the only time they shouldn't be unhappy about not winning enough is if they won them all. I choose to believe any team I've ever been on has a chance to win until that game is over. Not sure why people think that's annoying.

Good for Mercer that is a heck of a turnout even if it was just up I75

You guys have a good team - like I said I have been impressed with your John Russ through the years, he isn't going to wow you with any one thing but is solid all the way around and seems like he has great intangibles. Who do you guys have waiting in the wings?

I also think Bobby Lamb is a pretty good coach. Y'all will be fine.

Curious follow up. Something I raised earlier in the year. Doesn't Mercer graduate something like 30 seniors this season? How is that going to effect things going forward?

30 Seniors is about right. Obviously a lot of those are kids that came in for the practice year, non-scholly first class. Day 1's, as they are called. So, 30 or so Day 1's.

13 seniors graduate off the 2 deep (8 starters total) will finish their careers after this season. Unless someone ends up in the NFL. ;)

To me, John Russ was the home run of home runs. Consider this, he came to Mercer in the first class, no scholarship, no promise of a scholarship, and no idea we would move to a conference like the SoCon after 1 year in the PFL. I'm not even sure he had any offers. I think I heard he maybe had a Morehead State offer, and that it. Which is kinda of amazing, in my opinion, because I think he has been an exceptional player in a great league for pretty much his entire career.

He is currently 7th in FCS in active career passing yards and 50th on the all time career FCS passing yards list. If the trend keeps up, he'll finish his career high 20's-low 30's ranking on the career FCS passing list. Not bad for a kid that didn't have a scholly and went to a start up program. To put it in Mocs parlance, I think he'll finish just north of where Jacob Huesman finished. 8500 or so passing yards to Huesman's career 8200, and about half of Huesman's rushing total, 2200 or so to Huesman's 4000.

As far as the future. We signed Kaelan Riley from Calhoun (54-4 record in his career at Calhoun). Georgia AAA State Player of the Year. He was a 3 star when he came on the board. Offers from App State and Mercer. Of course, when he took the FCS offer, he now no longer has a star rating. Lol.

Big kid, 6'4'', 235 or so. I actually talked to his high school OC at the Chatt game last weekend. Smart football player. Not crazy fast but athletic (was also an all region basketball player on team that went 27-1). Release is a little unorthodox but good touch and can make necessary throws. Also, his OC said he's a film rat, which I love. Have no idea when the rubber meets the road, but I like all I've heard/seen from Kaelan so far.

Have to totally agree about Russ. He is the type of kid who sometimes seems to take the team on his back when the game is on the line.

Interested to see how Riley pans out.

I'm surprised he is listed as big as he is, especially considering he was only listed at 210 or so in his high school films.

I agree on a lot of your assessment. Surprised at his size. I find most guys in that range are playing TE in the SoCon, not QB. Ingle Martin was in that range, but he was an exception. Someone can maybe find a more recent example.

Bobby Lamb doesn't shy away from trying to bring in transfer QBs, though. Already did that once at Mercer. Did it a few times at Furman.

Since the questions were asked, I will respond...

Mercer, most likely, IMHO, will be rolling with R-FR Kaelan Riley at QB next Fall. If you want to make an analogy, I see John Russ (particularly this season) as very much like Jacob Huesman and Kaelan Riley is the Bear's Alejandro Bennifield...except, he'll only get 1 year as an understudy, instead of 3. Riley is BIG - 6-3 231, mobile, has a good arm, and was an excellent QB from a GA State Championship program, Calhoun...where he played for Coach Lamb's brother. So - he's had a little extra seasoning, perhaps. R-SR, Michael Haynes could come back for his 5th year and challenge Riley, but I expect if he does return, he will continue to be the very capable backup that he has been for the past 4 years (he WAS the backup even though he Redshirted last year). Tanner Brumby is the other QB currently on the roster. He has played a bit, but I don't think he's in line to challenge for the starting spot...though, of course, I could be wrong. Finally, there's always the possibility of an FBS transfer in the mode of Ingle Martin or Chris Forcier showing up on Coach Lamb's 'doorstep.' Johnny McCrary from Vandy may have been 'the guy' next year, but that just didn't work out...for whatever reason.

As far as Sr.'s graduating. I think Mercer will lose 5 or 6 what would typically be called "Starters" from each side of the ball. That said, I was a bit taken aback at how many YOUNG guys were playing last week throughout the game at Chattanooga, particularly on Defense. So, I'll use the term "Regulars" rather than "Starters"

On Defense, the Bears lose 'Regulars':
Tunde Ayinla (DE), Marvin Davis (NG), Kelly Brooks (DE/NG)
Tyler Ward (ILB), Tosin Aguebor (OLB), Tripp Patterson (ILB/OLB)
Zach Jackson (DB), Lendell Arnold (DB), Mike Gray (DB) - all Safeties

...so losing 3 at each level of the D...but return "Regulars"...

5 DLmen
6 DB's
5 LB's

On Offense, they lose 'Regulars':
Kirby Southard (C), Avery White (OG), Bret Niederreither (OT) - That's THE area I would be most concerned about if I was a Mercer Coach
Robert Brown (TE), JoJo Marshall (WR), Josh Jones (WR)
John Russ (QB)
Payton Usher (RB)

They return 'Regulars':
2 OL
3 TE's, 4 WR's
0 QB's
1 RB...maybe 2 (if Tee Mitchell returns, as I have heard he may) - another area of concern

Also lose Punter/Kick-Off man/Holder, Tyler Zielenske. PK and LS Return.

So...If QB grows up fast, they fill the holes on the OL (there are at least 2 good ones Redshirting), and enhance the RB position, they'll be fine. If not...

I said the same thing. One of the "things that need working on" out of high school was strength and physical makeup. Funny you mention this, because, as I said, I was talking to his high school OC (who incidentally was my high school pitching coach), and I said "Tell me how #5 is going to be?" First thing out of Coach's mouth was "My goodness, I just talked to him down on the field before the game and he has really filled out. They must be making him eat and work out 6 hours a day. He looks 20 lbs heavier and I think he's grown an inch."

So, to your point, I think having him get a little thicker was a concerted effort since he's been a Bear.

And I'm guessing this is pretty close, because I'm 6'4'', 240 and he's every bit as big as me, less some minor "rounding" in the middle. lol

I suppose my question is, are you sure he's going to be playing QB for the Bears?

Just spitballin, but Riley is not currently on the depth chart, is already bigger than virtually any QB you'll at this level (apparently, by design), and Mercer already tried to bring a transfer QB in front of him. Not only that, but Mercer has also been (to this point) an option read team where a running QB has been a big part of the offense.

Mercer likes two TE sets and is graduating Robert Brown. I see a fit :)

Lol. Ah. I get where you are going. I doubt that's the case. First of all, he's a hard redshirt. So you aren't going to depth chart a guy you know isn't playing. Also, we have, as FUBeAR mentioned, an extremely capable backup already.

Secondly, I don't think Johnny McCrary was "sought out". Based on what I've heard (nothing official), McCrary wasn't happy at Vandy. He wanted to come home (or close to it), to play FCS so he didn't have to sit out a year, and go to a private college. He's from Atlanta. And I think he knew some guys on Mercer's team. He reached out to Mercer. Clearly the only schools that would meet his criteria would be us or Kennesaw. And I don't think the TO is what he was looking for.

So, it worked out where he could have very well ended up on the team, but had he not expresses interest, I don't think CBL would have sought him out. But I would imagine if a guy who threw for 9 million yards in high school and had starting experience at an SEC called and said he was interested in coming to play for you, you would take that call, no?

Oh, and regarding the read option. Since entering the SoCon, including this season so far, Russ runs for about 35 yards per game. So I don't know how "big" a part of the offense that is aside from the threat of it. There's a good amount of RPO, but we're a long way from the PFL when John was a freshman and running for 80 yards a game.

Riley ran for 1400 yards and 22 TDs in 3 seasons as a starter in Calhoun to go with his 5000 passing yards and 51 TDs. So it think he may also have that club in his bag.

Wait, I thought 'stirring the pot' was MY job....You couldn't have filled that pot any more full of manure nor stuck a bigger baker's paddle into it...

* "Riley is not currently on the depth chart" - Riley is not on the depth chart because he is redshirting this season

* "Bigger than any QB you'll (see) at this level" - Really? How about this one? - http://www.gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6273

* "Mercer already tried to bring a transfer QB in front of him" - How do you know it was "in front" of him? Maybe Russ & Riley remained 'in front' of that transfer QB after Fall camp, which resulted in this - http://clarkatlantasports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1420&path=football

* "...a running QB has been a big part of the offense" - Russ is averaging just over 8 carries/game this season, which includes sacks, scrambles, and several QB Sneaks for TD's and 1st Downs. Chatt.'s Bennifield is averaging more rushing attempts/game than Russ as is Adams from WCU. The 2 'passing-est' QB's in the SoCon, Sammy's Hodges and VMI's Cobb have almost 8 and 6 respectively. Mercer's QB runs the ball just about as much as any non-triple-option QB runs the ball. Besides that, what makes you think a 6-4 235 QB can't be an effective runner in a college offense? This guy was pretty OK at it http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/newton_cameron00.html

* "Mercer likes two TE sets and is graduating Robert Brown" - Did you see the part where Mercer has 3 'Regulars' returning at TE next year - Sam Walker 6-4 232 will be a R-JR, Chris Ellington 6-4 243 will be a SO, and Chase Westfall 6-3 242 (who was playing a good bit before he became injured) will be a R-SO. In fact, since Westfall was injured, Trey Peppers 6-1 247 R-FR has been getting quite a few TE game reps.

* ":)" - Wipe that grin off your face, you jackal...you ain't shinin' no one!

Bear, if Riley is Cam Newton or Ingle Martin, then by all means, stick him back there and hand him the ball.

Maybe he just gained the freshman 15. That hot cookie bar will do it to you (at least did it to me).

I'm not stirring the pot, of course. If he's the starting QB, good for him. If he's not, good for the other guy. Makes no never mind to me.
