View Full Version : Sam Houston vs SFA - Battle of the Piney Woods

Just putting this out to get the discussion going.

SFA should be in the top 25 this week after beating ACU. SFA's defense forced 6 turnovers but true to form, almost blew a huge lead.

Not really. HBU scored some in the third quarter but this game was never in doubt. True that Sam needs to keep focus against weaker opponents, though. All BOTPW games are competitive but this one has real importance. The winner is the favorite to win the conference, along with maybe UCA and Nicholls. Can't wait to see everybody at NRG. Eat 'em Up, Kats!!

I don't know. Beating ACU really doesn't move the needle much for me. They are 0-fer with a loss to HB. SFA impressed me with their win last week against McNeese but not enough to crack the poll. Although I did put together a bracket for the hell of it last week, and the lumberjacks were one of the last ones in.

I will say that both UCA winning and Nicholls playing another FBS team to the wire helps a lot moving forward for the conference as a whole at the least in my opinion of the conference. With the 9 game conference schedule and a lot of DII/SWAC games and FBS powerhouse blowouts it's really hard to get a handle on how this conference stacks up. I've got a little more respect for the Southland tonight vs. my opinion yesterday.

As far as Sam Houston, I've been fairly low on them vs. the consensus (mid teens in the poll), but if SFA wins this game they will go sky rocketing up many polls especially the folks that have SHSU as high as 2. They'll be in my poll for sure as well. Maybe this week considering there's some teams that will fall out.

When interviewed after the HBU win, Keeler was asked about the SHSU-SFA rivalry.... He said "It's crazy. I don't understand it." He may not understand it, but the players and fans from both schools do. Can't wait!

Last year you guys out played us,except for a couple of special team breakdowns. This might be your year, we aren't playing very well and have several guys out with injury. The way we've played in the 2nd half so far this year, if you're close or have the lead you'll win. Still looking for a great game and atmosphere at NRG next week.

Just heard ticket sales for this game are at an all time high. SHSU, SFA and the Texans( Lone Star Sports) have all exceeded their allotment. Attendance is likely to be in excess of 30,000. Game on!

This is going to be a great game. Winner definitely has the inside track for the conference title.

SFA should be in the top 25 this week after beating ACU. SFA's defense forced 6 turnovers but true to form, almost blew a huge lead.

And they will be back out next week.

The fact that your defense isn't forcing turnovers against bad teams should be of concern

Also the fact that we were up 31 at one point before switching to vanilla defense would be due to our defense being productive before we let off of the gas

I see it this way: we are steamrolling bottom feeders without any turnovers. SFA blasted a bottom feeding ACU team by getting 6 turnovers. What would the SFA-ACU result have been without turnovers? At minimum, the margin of victory would have been much less. To be honest, the more I look at this game, the more I think SFA will have a difficult time. The wild card is Coach Conque. He always seemed to have SHSU's number when he coached at Central Arkansas.

If you want to use that logic, SFA only scored 10 points off of the turnover...so 31-30 for the final?

Also I wasn't at the game last year, but wasn't Sam down for part of the game due to Conque? I, unfortunately, was overseas and couldn't stream

Actually SFA played us very well last year and should have won.. they had a couple breakdowns on punt returns for td that cost them the game. Conque running ability last year was a big advantage for you, that's why I'm not totally convinced he won't play Saturday, unless he is hurt.
