I thought you had to have 12 teams in order to have a championship game...

or is this just a I-A rule?

How does the SWAC and Pioneer get around this? Is it because they dont particpate in NCAA post season?

thanks!

The NCAA allows 12 different exemptions to the maximum number of games.

One is a conference championship game for 12 member conferences.

Another is a I-AA "conference tournament" (championship game for FCS conferences with less than 12 members).

Yet another is the Gridiron Classic, in which the PFL participates. The PFL does not currently have a championship game.

The PFL doesn't participate in the playoffs because they aren't invited. This has nothing to do with the Gridiron Classic.

Technically the PFL does participate. Just not well enough to make the playoffs.
