Defensive Line/Special Teams Coordinator
Joe Trainer returns as the Wildcat defensive line coach and Special Teams Coordinator in 2015. Trainer is currently in his second stint at Villanova. He was also an assistant at Villanova from 1997-2004, including serving as defensive coordinator from 2000-2004, before returning to the staff in 2014. Last season, Trainer guided senior nose guard Pat Williams to second team All-CAA honors. Trainer returned to the Main Line in 2014 after a five-year stint as the head coach at the University of Rhode Island. In 2010, Trainer led Rhode Island to a 5-6 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the CAA. Included among the five victories were four wins over Top 25 opponents. For his efforts in 2010, he was named the CAA Coach of the Year. During his Rhode Island career, Trainer coached 44 CAA All-Academic team members, 18 All-Conference honorees and one All-American. Trainer left Villanova following the 2004 season to become the head coach at Millersville University. After three years as the Millersville head coach, he went to Rhode Island as the school's defensive coordinator. During his eight-year Villanova career from 1997-2004, Trainer coached numerous players to All-Conference accolades. In 2003, three of his defensive standouts were first team All-Conference selections, including defensive end Darrell Adams, linebacker Brian Hulea and safety Raymond Ventrone. Trainer also helped linebacker Shaun Lyons (1996-99) become just the second player in program history to record 400 career tackles. Trainer came to Villanova in in 1997 after serving as defensive coordinator at the University of New Haven for two years. Trainer has also coached at Colgate University, Frostburg State University and Temple University. He is a 1990 graduate of Dickinson College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. Trainer earned a Masters Degree in Education from Temple in 1992 and a Masters Degree in Counseling and Human Relations from Villanova in 2004. Born March 6, 1968, Trainer and his wife Moreen reside in Glenside, Pa., with their 15-year old son Liam, 13-year old son Dillon and 11-year old daughter Keira.
